Chapter 143: Chapter 143: True Self

000 chuckled softly, [But that is not very consistent with what you have done previously. Lucien, you have clearly chosen to bring Ethan down, have you not?]

Lucien was slightly taken aback because the tone of this system had suddenly shifted to something quite different, but before he could even muster a response, 000 continued speaking. [You are hesitating, or to put it bluntly, you are unclear about your own original intentions. Lucien, you still have to go through many more worlds; you cannot be so volatile and inconsistent, acting one way now and another way later. You are not suited for the image of a holy savior or those who constantly try to appear magnanimous, and you certainly do not need to force yourself into such a facade.]

000 delivered a long speech. It was true that ever since arriving in this second world, the system had been talking quite a lot, but words with such profound depth were completely beyond the capability of 000’s second personality. Consequently, Lucien clicked his tongue. "Are you back, first personality?"

[To be completely honest, I do not appreciate the way you address me like this.] 000 sighed, acting entirely as if it possessed genuine human nature. It even swayed its teardrop-shaped body in a display of sheer disgust. [How on earth did this foolish entity choose such an appearance?]

"It acts exactly like a child." Lucien clicked his tongue again. "So, what would you prefer I call you?"

Lucien seemingly did not want to continue the topic that 000 had just brought up, but the system felt differently. [Do not try to change the subject, Lucien. There is absolutely no harm in a person being a little selfish. Regarding right and wrong in this world, as long as you do not feel ashamed of yourself and your conscience does not torment you in the dead of night, that is all that matters.]

Upon finishing its sentence, 000 staggered a couple of times. Lucien seemed to notice that its teardrop-shaped body had turned slightly pale.

[I merely came to check on the progress of this world; the two of you need to speed things up. As for what you should call me...]

Lucien watched as that winged teardrop momentarily vanished for a second, accompanied by a voice signal that sounded as if it were being swept away by the ocean breeze, rendering it somewhat indistinct. [...I hope that next time I can let you know what you should call me.]

000 disappeared for only a single second before reappearing. Lucien could even hear it muttering curses under its breath. [If you are going to hijack someone’s access rights, you should at least give them advance notice. How utterly despicable!]

Once it was done complaining, it wobbled right back in front of Lucien. [What were you two just discussing?]

Right at that moment, the elevator conveniently let out a ding and opened on the ground floor. Lucien did not bother to answer 000; instead, he stepped outside and headed toward the bus stop. The night wind blew past, carrying the encroaching chill of the incoming autumn. He pulled the collar of his jacket up high, yet this time, he did not feel as lonely as he had on previous nights.

Upon returning to his apartment, Lucien did not immediately turn on his laptop as he usually would. He threw himself onto the bed, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. That brief conversation with 000’s first personality had left him with a great deal to ponder.

Then, his mind suddenly drifted back to his conversation with Damian.

"You are different from what I thought."

"How am I different?" Lucien whispered into the darkness. "How am I different, Damian Thorne?"

But that question yielded no answer. There was only the low humming of the air conditioner and the flapping sound of 000’s wings somewhere in the air. Perhaps even Lucien himself was genuinely unsure of what kind of image he wanted to build in front of the male lead of this world.

Or should he simply stay true to his own self?

But what exactly was Lucien’s true self? In the real world, he was nothing more than a kid who had barely reached adulthood, having yet to stumble through life’s many hardships.

There were far too many things that needed to be weighed and considered within Lucien’s mind.

The following morning, Lucien arrived at the company in a rather unpleasant mood. He had not slept well the previous night, his mind constantly haunted by the words spoken by 000’s first personality: "There is absolutely no harm in a person being a little selfish." It was easy enough to say, but how to be selfish without losing oneself in the process was the real problem.

He had just placed his bag on the desk, not even having the chance to sit down in his chair, when 000’s voice rang out in his mind, shrill and brimming with sheer excitement.

[Hey host, I have a brand new mission for you.]

Lucien let out a long sigh and pulled his chair out to sit. "Could you possibly leave me in peace for just one morning? Ever since I got home last night, my head has been spinning out of control."

[Missions arrive when they arrive; I have absolutely no authority to delay them,] 000 replied, its tone as innocent as always. However, this time, its voice sounded slightly different; it was not necessarily more serious, but rather carried an underlying sense of urgency. [Listen very carefully: Tonight, you must create an opportunity for Damian Thorne to kiss you. The reward is fifty bonding points, along with unlocking the physical sensation of being kissed.]

Lucien froze completely. He had just picked up his computer mouse, but his hand stopped entirely in mid-air as he looked up at the chubby teardrop flapping its wings above him.

"What did you just say?"

[Tonight, you must create an opportunity for Damian Thorne to kiss you,] 000 repeated, pronouncing every single word with absolute clarity.

Lucien remained dead silent for a long time. Then, he let out a laugh, a smile that contained absolutely no trace of amusement. "You have lost your mind. Damian and I have only managed to have one proper conversation just last night, and you already expect me to make him kiss me?"

[Just calm down. I did not tell you to throw yourself at him; I merely told you to create an opportunity. Whether Damian actually kisses you or not is entirely up to him,] 000 replied, then added, its voice dropping to a slightly lower pitch. [Besides, you must not forget your primary mission. Or perhaps you could create some sort of scenario to exchange for a kiss?]

"The male lead in your world is a human being, not some vending machine where you can just insert a coin and have it dispense a kiss."

[I do not think of him like that. But I do think you are over-worrying. What exactly are you afraid of? Are you terrified of being rejected, or are you afraid that the kiss will make it so you are no longer just an outside spectator?]

Lucien gave no reply. He turned back toward his monitor and opened a blank design file, but his mind was not focused in the slightest. 000 was partially correct. He was not afraid of being rejected. He was simply agonizing over what role he should play in front of Damian. A weak victim? A kind-hearted soul? Or should he just live true to his original self, just as that first personality had suggested?

But what was his true self? Just a young boy who had never experienced the harshness of reality, suddenly thrown into a world overflowing with schemes and calculations, who now had to simultaneously complete missions and deal with all sorts of people. He had tried acting out various personas, and every single time, it had yielded results. But this time involved a kiss, something that could never be disguised under the pretense of mere coincidence.

"Alright," he said softly, after a prolonged moment of silence. "Give me some time to figure out a plan and see how it goes."

After speaking, Lucien had absolutely no desire to continue communicating with 000, yet the look of utter annoyance on his face was crystal clear. The morning passed by in relative quiet. Ethan did not make much of an appearance; perhaps the man was too busy relishing the lingering aftertaste of victory after receiving praise from Howard in front of the entire department. Mark occasionally cast nervous glances in Lucien’s direction, his eyes filled with worry, but Lucien merely offered a subtle nod to reassure him.

By noon, Sarah stopped by his desk, setting down a lunchbox just as she usually did. "I bought an extra one. Eat up, do not skip your meals."

"Yes, thank you."

Sarah looked at him for a moment before quietly asking, "Are you alright? I have noticed you staying late quite often recently, and your eyes always have dark circles under them. Has Ethan been forcing you to do something again?"

"I am perfectly fine. I am merely... experimenting with a few things."

"Experimenting with what?"

Lucien smiled faintly, offering no answer. Sarah shook her head and then returned to her seat.

In the afternoon, Lucien opened his email and composed a new message addressed to Damian. It was not the lengthy email complete with all the collected evidence against Ethan that he had previously drafted. That particular draft was still sitting safely in his drafts folder, waiting patiently for the perfect moment. But for now, he simply needed a reason to meet Damian tonight.
