Chapter 96: Chapter 96: A Calculated Departure

After that night of feigned jealousy, everything seemed to remain exactly the same. Dominic Vance still came home from work on time, still sat down to eat the meals he cooked, and still pinned Lucien to the bed with a frequency that would make anyone suspect this novel protagonist had kidneys made of stainless steel.

However, Lucien knew that something had quietly shifted.

At the very least, during certain fleeting moments, Lucien caught a glimpse of Dominic Vance looking at him with eyes full of calculation. It only happened in the blink of an eye, making Lucien feel as though he could not even be certain. It was just that occasionally, he felt like a piece of merchandise being placed on a scale by a merchant to be weighed and evaluated.

For a man like Dominic Vance, every emotion was merely a calculated equation of pros and cons.

Lucien did not mind. He had played his part up to this point, and there was no way to retreat anyway. Furthermore, no matter how terrifying that man might be, Dominic was ultimately just a character in a book. To him, all those midnight thrusts, those morning caresses, and those silent dinners sitting across from each other were nothing more than moves in a chess game with a predetermined outcome.

That was, until Saturday morning of that week.

Lucien was curled up under the blankets, his hair as messy as a bird’s nest, drowsily debating whether he should make crepes today or lazily stay in bed until noon, when Dominic Vance walked out of the dressing room. He was not wearing his usual gray suit or white shirt, but rather a thin black sweater and dark trousers, carrying a small leather suitcase in his hand.

Lucien blinked and jolted upright. Following the instincts programmed into him over the past few months, he hurriedly left the bed, stepping barefoot onto the freezing wooden floor, and ran to stand in front of the man.

"Where... are you going?"

Dominic Vance bent down to adjust the lock on the suitcase, replying nonchalantly, "I have some business to attend to. I need to go on a business trip for three days."

The first reaction from Lucien was a surge of primal, unadulterated joy bubbling up in his chest. Good heavens, three whole days of not having to pretend to be gentle and obedient! Three days of not having to cook and wait by the door! Three days of not being subjected to physical torment to the point of limping the next morning!

But in a fraction of a second, he managed to suppress that rebellious emotion down to the very bottom of his heart. His expression instantly shifted from sleepy to regretful, his lower lip protruding slightly, his eyelashes fluttering.

"Oh... is that so?" The voice of Lucien grew a little softer, and he reached out to grasp the hem of Dominic Vance’s sweater, only holding it loosely, as if afraid of being brushed off: "Three whole days? That is too long..."

Dominic Vance paused his hand movements and lifted his eyes to look at him.

Lucien felt that gaze sweeping across his face, from his eyes still slightly puffy from sleep, to his pale pink lips that were slightly pouted. Truthfully, Lucien thought this man might offer some perfunctory comfort, something along the lines of promising to return soon or whatever else. Who would have expected that Dominic would simply give a curt word of acknowledgement before turning to glance at the watch on his wrist. "The driver has arrived."

Lucien clicked his tongue softly; indeed, one gets tired of eating the same thing too much.

He guessed that the appraising looks he had been receiving lately were likely because Dominic Vance wanted to test the waters and see what exactly was so special about him that could help the man resolve his physiological issues.

The matter of Dominic Vance finding some mistress was only a matter of time anyway. It was just unexpected that, after setting aside the initial passion, the true nature of Dominic Vance could be so incredibly cold.

Then again, considering how long Miles Sinclair had been by Dominic’s side, even Miles Sinclair was ruthlessly kicked away in the end.

Just as the saying goes, thin lips indicate a fickle heart.

While Lucien was still letting his mind wander, Dominic Vance had already picked up his suitcase and turned around to walk toward the door.

The man suddenly halted, tilting his head slightly, his sharp and cold side profile illuminated under the hallway lights.

"Is there a problem?"

Lucien stood there, his bare feet on the cold wooden floor, still wearing his thin silk pajamas, looking bizarrely small and fragile. His demeanor was just like a deeply aggrieved little wife, using silence to express his reproach over why his man was going on a business trip without giving any prior notice.

What a pity, there was only a fleeting trace of annoyance on the face of the man opposite him.

Lucien very quickly adjusted his expression, flashing an obedient smile. "Have a safe trip. I will be waiting for you."

Dominic Vance looked at him for a moment longer than usual. Then the man nodded, said nothing more, and stepped entirely out of the room. The bedroom door clicked shut with a very soft sound. A moment later, the loud thud of the main door echoing from the hall below could be heard, followed by the sound of a car engine rolling further and further away.

Lucien stood perfectly still in his spot, the obedient smile on his lips extinguishing instantly like a burnt-out lightbulb.

He walked over to the windowsill and pulled back the curtains to look down. The black Maybach had already disappeared at the end of the tree-lined street. The eyes of Lucien drooped as he softly whispered to the System, "This time when he goes to his work destination, that Hannah girl will probably be there too, right?"

[Exactly.]

"How long have I been here, 000? I mean, compared to the real time outside in my own world."

[Nearly two weeks. I recommend that you end this world soon; that would be optimal for your physical body on the outside. Dragging this out for too long will have negative consequences.]

"I know. Are we not approaching the best part of the play anyway?"

There are those who, once accustomed to holding the power of life and death, will not want anything to slip out of their control. But obviously, the appearance of Lucien was turning everything in the world of Dominic Vance completely upside down.

Therefore, Dominic wanted to experiment a little, and also wanted to rearrange everything.

Well then, let him experiment.

"Take a guess, who will die without the other?"

Lucien turned back into the room and stretched out luxuriously, feeling every joint pop and crack. Three days of freedom, with no need to pretend to be obedient or spread his legs to serve a man. Just thinking about it was enough to make his entire body feel deeply refreshed.

But before enjoying his vacation, there was still one more thing left to do.

Lucien walked over to the desk. This was the desk of Dominic Vance, but the man had allowed him to share it for a long time now. He pulled open the second drawer on the left and took out a stack of cream-colored stationery, a thick type of paper with faint floral borders. He had prepared this in advance, just in case he ever needed it.

He sat down on the chair, twirling the fountain pen in his hand for a while. The early morning sunlight pierced through the gaps in the curtains, casting shimmering streaks of light upon the paper. Lucien took a deep breath and began to write, his handwriting soft and meticulous, perfectly mirroring the very facade he was currently wearing.

"To you, Dominic Vance.

You have been gone for less than an hour, yet I already find myself missing you. This house is too large, too empty. Without you here, even the ticking of the clock sounds so terribly loud.

I know you are busy, and I know you hate being bothered. But I am writing these lines anyway, even though you might never read them.

This morning, you said absolutely nothing to me. I waited; I stood at the window watching your car disappear from sight. I do not know what I did wrong.

Perhaps it was because I acted jealous. Perhaps it was because I cried. Perhaps it was because I was simply too troublesome.

But do you know? I was not jealous because I do not trust you. I was jealous because I do not trust myself. Every day that I look at you, I constantly ask myself: am I worthy? You are so wonderful, while I have nothing at all. One day you will realize that I am bland and utterly dull, having nothing interesting to offer besides knowing how to cook a few dishes and waiting for you to return. When that time comes, what am I supposed to do?

So I am afraid. Afraid that someone else will steal you away. Afraid that if you take your eyes off me for just a single second, you will realize how many better people there are in the outside world.

I know I am selfish. But my dear, my love for you has already become the most selfish thing in this world.

..."

Lucien stopped his pen, tilting his head to read it over.

"Wow, cheesy enough to kill." He muttered to himself, though his hand continued to write. The written words just kept flowing out, gentle and anguished, drenched in a truly beautiful sorrow. He wrote about the little things, about the first time he met Dominic, about the nights the man held him to sleep while he whispered words that the other could not hear.

He wrote about a fragile, dependent Lucien Sinclair who considered Dominic Vance his entire world.

He wrote about a Lucien Sinclair who would surely die if he could no longer be by his side one day.

All of it was nothing but lies.
