Aire remained on her knees.

The shadows still coiled around her legs. They pulsed faintly against her skin alive. Every movement hurt, and every breath reminded her she was trapped.

The court hall remained silent.

Aire could feel hundreds of eyes on her.

Dark fae lined the edges of the hall, watching the scene unfold with varying degrees of amusement, curiosity, and indifference.

None of them looked uncomfortable. They looked as though this was normal entertainment, and the last they would get.

Aire lowered her gaze to the floor.

Blood dripped from the corner of her mouth, and a small crimson stain spread across the black stone.

For a moment nobody spoke.

Then footsteps echoed. Vaelor returned to her.

Aire didn’t need to look up to know it was him. The sound alone had become familiar. The sound of his footsteps alone was enough to make something cold settle inside her stomach.

He stopped directly before her.

Aire waited for more torture, but nothing happened. She slowly lifted her head, and Vaelor stood before her.

The expression on his face made her skin crawl. He observed her like she was an animal.

Aire’s jaw tightened immediately.

Vaelor circled her once.

Aire’s shoulders stiffened. She coudknt wait for this to be over. Carefully, she searched for Morrigan in the hall.

Morrigan was nowhere to be found.

The older fae watched from his throne with open interest, and several members of the court exchanged glances.

Something had changed.

Aire could feel it, even if she didn’t understand it.

Vaelor stopped in front of her again.

His violet eyes settled on her face, her silver hair, her eyes, and back to her face.

Aire glared at him, and it earned absolutely no reaction. For a long moment he simply stared into her eyes.

Suddenly, something invisible moved through the room. The air shifted into a strange air, and the temperature dropped.

Aire frowned.

The strange feeling brushed across her mind softly. The feeling felt like fingers touching a locked door.

The sensation tickled her fondly, as if trying to coax her. The feeling vanished immediately, and Aire blinked, confused.

Vaelor didn’t move.

Neither did anyone else.

The older fae amusement immediately disappeared. Several fae near the front of the hall suddenly straightened.

Aire noticed none of it.

She was too busy trying to understand the strange sensation she had felt. It had lasted less than a second, then it was gone.

Vaelor stared at her.

The invisible pressure returned. Again it touched her mind, and it vanished instantly.

Aire frowned harder. "What?" She asked sharply before she could stop herself. Could he stop string at her that way?

A ripple moved through the hall.

Vaelor’s expression remained unchanged, but the court had noticed. Every single person had noticed, because they knew exactly what he was doing.

Compulsion.

One of the oldest gifts possessed by powerful fae.

A command wrapped in magic, and a thought forced where it did not belong. Most creatures folded immediately, and couldn’t resist.

Aire, however, didn’t even realize she was resisting.

The compulsion touched her mind, and failed. It happened again, again, and again.

Vaelor’s eyes narrowed slightly.

The older fae straightened. His fingers stopped tapping against the arm of his throne with seriousness.

Aire shifted uncomfortably.

The silence was becoming unbearable.

"What are you staring at?" She yelled, and the question echoed.

Several fae looked horrified, and one actually inhaled sharply. Nobody spoke to Vaelor that way.

Vaelor ignored the question entirely.

His gaze remained fixed on her. He parted his lipps, and quietly, he asked. "What is your name?"

Aire frowned.

The question seemed absurd yet she answered without delay, while she gave hima wary look. "Aire."

Vaelor remained silent.

"What is your name?" he repeated.

"Aire." She repeated.

Several fae exchanged questioning glances.

The ruler’s eyes sharpened.

Vaelor continued. "Who are you loyal to?"

Aire blinked in shock. The question caught her off guard. Her expression hardened. She looked around with a tight jaw, and shook her head. "No one in this room."

A few dark fae smiled despite themselves.

Vaelor ignored them. His eyes darkened dangerously. He drew in a sharp inhale. "What are you thinking right now?"

Aire frowned. "That you’re irritating." She chuckled, not holding back since he wanted honesty.

Vaelor remained perfectly still.

The compulsion brushed her mind again, stronger this time. Much stronger.

Aire felt a sudden pressure behind her eyes, and a brief headache. Then she felt nothing in the blink of an eye. Absolutely nothing.

The magic shattered against something neither of them could see.

Vaelor finally stepped back.

The hall had become completely silent again. Nobody missed what had happened. Aire looked around, confused.

Why was everyone staring?

Why had the room suddenly become so tense?

The ruler slowly rose from his throne.

That alone drew immediate attention.

His gaze never left Aire.

"Well." His voice rolled through the hall. "That’s new. She’s a weapon. "

Aire frowned.

Vaelor’s father decended the steps.

His eyes moved from Aire to Vaelor, then back to Aire again.

A thoughtful smile touched his lips. One disturbingly similar to Vaelor’s. He stopped beside Vaelor.

He nodded at Vaelor fondly. "She doesn’t know."

Vaelor nodded once. "I noticed." He said coldly

Aire stared at both of them. "What are you talking about?" She asked sharply, and the vines pickled her skin, as if to keep her shut.

Neither answered.

Aire felt frustration building. She hated being discussed like she wasn’t there.

Vaelor’s father finally looked directly at her. His amusement vanished, replaced by calculation.

"You have no idea what you are, do you?"

The question settled heavily in the hall.

Aire stared at him, then she frowned harder. Knowing who she really was was exactly what she was trying to do in the fae realm before Morrigan forcefully brought her here.

"I know exactly who I am."

The ruler laughed sadly.

Vaelor remained silent.

His gaze never left her.

Aire suddenly wished he would stop looking at her. She had the horrible feeling that something had changed.

She had absolutely no idea what.

Vaelor’s eyes remained fixed on Aire. "Take her back."
