The cage felt emptier after Morrigan left.

Aire sat with her back against the wall, one knee pulled to her chest. Dried blood remained at the corner of her mouth. She could still taste it every time she swallowed.

The taste irritated her.

Aire closed her eyes.

She refused to accept being trapped here forever. She qould surely find her way back home, even if no one finds their way to her.

The moment she accepted it, she would become exactly what they wanted. They wanted her broken, tamed, and a pet.

Aire opened her eyes.

The black vines remained wrapped around her wrists.

They looked almost relaxed now, as though they knew she had nowhere to go.

Aire stared at them, and sighed softly.

Her stomach growled again. She was beginning to feel dizzy. She badly needed water, and then food.

The sound echoed embarrassingly through the cage.

Aire groaned and leaned her head back against the wall.

She needed information. Not food, information. Informations that would get her home, save her, and keep her alive.

Hopefully, food could wait.

Aire’s fingers absently brushed the vines.

She needed books, maps, or history.

Anything.

Every kingdom had weaknesses, and every realm had weaknesses. Even dark faes.

Especially dark faes. They are powerful, arrogant, and ancient. Every arrogant thing eventually made mistakes.

Aire intended to find those mistakes.

The sound of footsteps interrupted her thoughts.

She immediately straightened.

The footsteps were measured, calm, and unhurried. Somehow, Aire already knew who it was before he appeared.

Vaelor.

The male emerged from the corridor exactly as expected.

Everything about him looked composed. She wished he looked inconvenienced once in his life.

He stopped before the cage.

Neither of them spoke immediately. Vaelor simply studied her, and Aire studied him back.

His eyes briefly moved to the dried blood on her mouth, then back to her face.

"Aire." He called her softly.

Aire suddenly wondered if he practiced sounding like that. "Vaelor." She responded.

"Have you accepted?" He questioned, going straight to the point.

Aire stared at him.

For a moment she considered refusing again. For her pride, stubbornness, and satisfaction. However, reality returned.

Reality reminded her that pride would not remove the vines. Her pride would not give her books. Her pride would not give her information, and her pride would not get her home.

Aire inhaled slowly, then nodded.

"Yes." The word felt strange.

Vaelor remained completely still.

Aire suddenly felt compelled to explain herself, but she dare not say a word beyond her acceptance.

His brow lifted slightly.

Aire folded her arms gently, and said nothing.

Vaelor nodded once. As though he had expected that silence. He seemed to expect everything.

Aire narrowed her eyes. She cleared her throat, and began. "I am not doing this because I want to."

Vaelor ignored her words completely. He doesn’t care why she was accepting. All be cared about was his plan going intact.

His gaze dropped to the vines, then returned to her face.

"Hold still." He ordered.

Aire immediately stiffened. "What are you doing?"

"Removing them."

Aire froze. Just like that? She lifted her wrists, and the vines shifted almost as if they sensed what was happening.

Vaelor stepped forward.

The air around him changed, and dark magic gathered quietly around him, staying present like a storm sitting on the horizon.

His hand lifted, and the vines immediately reacted.

Aire winced, as pain shot through her wrists.

The vines tightened, as they fought, and refused.

Vaelor’s eyes narrowed.

The magic around him deepened, and the cage suddenly felt colder. The vines twisted violently.

Aire gritted her teeth. One thorn dug deeper, and blood appeared on her wrists. She hissed when two more thorns dud the same thing.

The pain lasted only seconds, but it felt much longer.

Vaelor never looked away from her.

His gaze remained locked onto hers, calm, steady, and dominant. The vines suddenly froze, then loosened at once.

Aire felt it immediately.

The pressure vanished, and the constant awareness vanished along side the pressure.

The silent threat vanished, and the vines slowly unraveled. One loop dropped, then another. Finally, they dropped from her wrists completely.

Aire stared at them.

For several seconds she simply stared. She had almost forgotten what freedom around her wrist felt like.

She had almost forgotten what her wrists looked like without black vines wrapped around them, and forgotten what it felt like not to wait for pain.

Aire slowly rubbed her skin.

The marks remained. Thin black lines circled both wrists, as a proof that they had existed.

Aire exhaled. Her breath shook slightly.

"You are free of them." Vaelor spoke.

Aire nodded immediately.

Vaelor turned away, and began walking.

Aire stared at his back. "You really are strange." She murmured softly.

Vaelor continued walking. "A common oflobservation." He agreed dryly.

Aire followed. She took three steps forward, and the cage door opened on its own.

For the first time in what felt like forever, she walked out with no vines, or restraints.

The sensation felt dangerous, beautiful, and terrifying.

Aire almost expected someone to stop her.

Nobody did, and then she realised it was real. The moment the vines came off, she realized how dangerous that was. They were giving her freedom. Which meant they believed she couldn’t use it.

The corridor stretched ahead, and Vaelor walked in front.

Aire followed behind. The deeper they moved into the estate, the more nervous she became.

Not because of Vaelor.

Not entirely. But because of where they were going.

Lysander.

The thought appeared immediately.

Aire frowned. She still didn’t understand it. None of it made sense. Why his chamber? Why him?

Why not another room? Why not a guest wing? Why not literally anywhere else?

The questions followed her through every hallway.

Eventually they reached the upper floors.

Aire immediately recognized the area.

Her stomach dropped. This was Lysander’s floor. The realization settled heavily, and they continued forward.

Aire barely took another step forward when she heard a soft distant beautiful tune.

The sound drifted through the hallway.

Aire stopped walking instantly.

Her heart skipped a beat. The tune floated through the air again. The tune was so familiar, and impossible to forget.

Aire froze.

Every muscle in her body locked in shock. That wasn’t possible yet the melody continued.

Aire’s breathing stopped. She knew that tune. She knew it. She knew every note, every pause, every rise, and every fall.

She had sung it before. She created that sound back home in the wolf realm. Back before being Luna and everything.

Very slowly, Aire turned toward the massive doors at the end of the corridor.

The music was coming from inside.

From Lysander’s chamber.
