Reality immediately returned to her like ice water.

Aire froze. Her eyes flew open, and the spell shattered instantly. She shoved both hands against his chest hard.

Lysander stumbled backward in surprise.

Aire sat upright immediately.

Her breathing came fast.

She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand as though trying to erase what had just happened.

The room became painfully silent.

Lysander stared at her while Aire refused to look at him. She stared somewhere beyond the room.

She clenched her jaw in memories. Nate tugged at her chest. She let out a long breath as Alaric eyes flashed before her and Xanden’s voice brushed her ears.

The image struck her so hard her chest hurt.

Aire lowered her gaze. A fresh wave of shame rolled through her stomach, and her fingers curled into the blankets beneath her.

Lysander remained standing where she had pushed him.

Aire could feel his eyes on her. She hated that she knew exactly how those eyes looked right now.

The same way Lyse used to look whenever she was upset.

Aire closed her eyes briefly.

No, this was not Lyse, but Lysander.

When she looked at him, she saw both. The two faces refused to separate.

Slowly, Aire stood. The movement finally broke the silence.

"That was a mistake." She told him calmly.

Lysander watched her carefully.

Aire still refused to look at him. She brushed imaginary dust from her clothes, then she repeated herself.

"That should not have happened."

Lysander remained quiet for a moment, then he nodded. "I know." He assured her firmly.

Aire swallowed in relief.

Lysander dragged a hand through his hair. "I shouldn’t have been that careless."

Aire finally glanced at him.

He looked sincere. Unfortunately, sincerity had become difficult for her to believe. Not after this realm, or him.

He coukd be acting to her right now, and she wouldn’t be surprised.

Aire folded her arms loosely. "I was overwhelmed." She began to explain herself.

Lysander’s expression softened.

She continued before he could misunderstand. "I thought you were dead." She confessed.

Regret flickered across his face.

Aire immediately looked away. "I spent years thinking you died."

Lysander lowered his eyes. "I apologise."

"No." Aire shook her head. "You don’t speak when I speak." She snapped at him with a glare.

The room fell silent again.

Aire inhaled slowly, then she released enough breath. She wasn’t giving him more of herself tonight.

Not anymore.

She changed the subject deliberately. "What happens now?" She asked him.

Lysander blinked at her.

Aire walked slowly through the chamber. She slowly examinimed everything. She examined the windows, the fireplace, the shelves, and the doors.

She glanced at every exist quickly, not to rise any suspicion. Most importantly, she examined the distance between everything.

Lysander watched her. "What do you mean?"

Aire gestured around the room. "This." She turned to him. "Apparently I live here now."

Lysander looked uncomfortable.

Aire continued walking. "How long have you known that I’ll be forced to live here?"

His shoulders stiffened. Lysander leaned against the table. "A while."

Aire nodded thoughtfully. "A while."

She repeated the words carefully, then she tilted her head. "Useful answer."

Lysander sighed. "Aire—"

She lifted a hand, shutting him up. "I’m not arguing." Her tone remained surprisingly pleasant.

That seemed to confuse him even more.

Aire continued exploring the room. "Did Vaelor know you knew me?"

"Yes."

She nodded, and her gaze moved toward the bookshelves. There were hundreds of books there.

Immediately her attention sharpened.

She glanced through the history section, then to the maps, and the records. She had seen them a few times when she came in here. However, he was always around so she never touched any of them.

Aire forced herself to look only mildly interested.

"Did Morrigan know?"

"Yes."

Aire smiled gently. "What a lovely collection of liars." She mumured sarcastically.

She approached one of the shelves.

Her fingers brushed the spine of a book.

Ancient Fae Territories.

Lysander took a cautious step forward. "Aire." He called, his voice hardening.

She glanced at him. "What?"

Lysander took a step back. "I am sorry." A dark glint passed between his eyes, as he straightened.

Aire stared at him for several seconds, then she nodded once, accepting the statement.

She continued examining the room, then another question occurred to her.

A practical one.

"Where am I sleeping?"

Lysander eyes the bed, and his gaze returned to her. "The bed."

Aire looked toward it.

The enormous bed occupied almost half the chamber. It looked ridiculous. Dark faes truly enjoyed excess.

She folded her arms across her chest. "And you?"

Lysander shrugged. "I don’t really sleep."

Aire raised a brow at him. "You don’t sleep." She repeated thoughtfully.

"Not often."

She stared at him softly, and Lysander looked slightly amused. A small smile touched his face.

Aire stomach twisted.

She needed information, and not memories.

Information.

She moved toward the windows, and the realm stretched beyond them.

Aire rested her hands against the glass. "Forty days." She whispered to herself, but loud enough for Lysander to hear.

Lysander’s expression darkened. "Vaelor told you."

Aire shook her head. "Morrigan."

Lysander muttered something unpleasant beneath his breath.

Aire pretended not to hear it but she was certain he disliked Morrigan.

That could be useful for her.

Aire turned away from the window. The moment she did, she caught Lysander staring at her.

And worse, he was smiling.

A slow smile formed across his lips. The sort of smile Lyse used to wear whenever he thought he had gotten away with something.

Aire immediately felt a smile threatening her lips.

The realization horrified her. She quickly pressed her lips together.

However, Lysander had already seen it, and his grin widened instantly.

Aire looked away.

Lysander’s grin widened even more. He actually looked pleased with himself.

Aire rolled her eyes.

Lysander leaned casually against the table. "Beautiful." He bowed lightly, his chest rippling with a laugh threatening to leave his chest.

Aire frowned. "What is?"

"Your smile."

Aire’s expression immediately flattened. She looked offended.

Lysender laughed softly, and Aire found herself offended. She folded her arms for the hundredth time across her chest, and found Lysander still smiling.

Unfortunately, seeing him smile no longer felt entirely unfamiliar. That was dangerous. What was he playing at?

Aire decided to solve the problem immediately. She tilted her head, and tucked a strand of her silver hair behind her ear. "Alaric smiles like that too."

The effect of her words was immediate. Lysander’s grin disappeared completely.

Aire almost applauded.

The silence that followed felt glorious.

Lysander straightened slowly. "Who?"

Aire began walking across the room. She walked toward the bathroom. Most importantly, away from whatever expression he was currently making.

"Alaric."

Lysander followed her with his eyes. His voice remained carefully neutral. "Who is Alaric?"

Aire reached the bathroom door, then she glanced over her shoulder. Her face softened, showing pure innocence. "One of my mates."

Aire watched the words hit him. She watched how the realization hit him, and watched his entire face drop.

The satisfaction warmed her heart.

She smiled sweetly, then opened the bathroom door. "Goodnight, Lysander."

Before he could say a single word, she disappeared inside, and the door shut behind her.
