...

Human Realm:

The first thing Mabel noticed was the smell of salt, wet timber, rotting fish, and smoke.

None of it belonged together, yet somehow humans had built an entire civilization around it.

She stood at the bow of the enormous ship as thick morning fog slowly began lifting from the sea.

For several long moments, she saw nothing except endless white.

Then, she finally saw land.

Gigantic white cliffs rose from the sea like walls carved by forgotten gods. They stretched endlessly across the horizon, catching the pale morning light until they almost glowed.

The sailors around her immediately became louder.

"We’re home!"

"England!"

"We made it!"

Laughter spread across the deck. Some men removed their caps, and others simply stared toward the cliffs with relief written across their faces.

Mabel frowned.

Humans truly were sentimental creatures.

King Fitzgerald appeared beside her, his boots thudding softly against the wooden deck.

His eyes remained fixed on the coastline. "Beautiful," he murmured.

She looked at him. "It is rock." She scoffed lightly. She looked back toward the cliffs.

They were, indeed, only rock.

Nothing about them reminded her of the towering flowery mountains surrounding the Wolf Realm.

Nothing compared to the wolf realm and yet, the closer the ship drifted toward the cliffs, the more people smiled.

The ship rounded the cliffs.

Mabel’s green eyes slowly widened. She had expected another harbor.

Instead, an entire city unfolded before her. Hundreds of ships crowded the harbor with large ships, small ships, merchant vessels painted in bright colours, fishing boats, and military warships bearing England’s crimson banners.

The harbor itself stretched farther than humans could see. She was able to see it.

Wooden docks branched into the sea like roots, and tens of thousands of people moved across them.

Workers unloaded crates, children ran barefoot between carts, horses dragged enormous wagons filled with barrels, and merchants shouted prices from every direction.

Bells rang somewhere beyond the fog.

Mabel stood completely still. If she was suprised, it didn’t show in her eyes. "So many."

Fitzgerald smiled. "You’ve never seen a human capital."

"No."

"No kingdom in the human realm rivals London."

She believed him.

Humans lived differently. Everywhere she looked, someone was bargaining, arguing, and working.

The city pulsed like a living creature.

The ship finally docked.

Before anyone lowered the gangplank, trumpets echoed across the harbor, and the sound rolled over the water.

Immediately, every worker stopped. The dockhand bowed, and the solders straightened.

The King had arrived.

Fitzgerald sighed quietly. "I forgot about this."

Mabel turned to him. For a second, her eyes softened, and it disappeared almost immediately. "You forgot people greet their king?"

"I forgot how dramatic they make it."

Mabel almost smiled.

The gangplank lowered, and King Fitzgerald descended first. The entire harbor erupted.

"Long live the King!"

"His Majesty has returned!"

"God save England!"

Thousands of voices merged into one.

Mabel followed several steps behind.

The reaction changed the moment she stepped down. Silence fell on the harbor. Absolute silence.

It lasted only a heartbeat.

Then, they erupted. "Who is she?" A thousand people asked at once, genuinely curious.

Mabel ignored every whisper. She walked with her back straight, her eyes forward, and she never appear impressed.

The crowd parted without being asked as they stared at her. Their eyes followed her as though she had stepped out of a legend.

Her green eyes never wavered.

The people arpund noticed houw she looked more royal than everyone around her. One young nobleman whispered far too loudly.

"I’ve never seen anyone so beautiful." His fiancée immediately slapped his arm.

He barely noticed. His eyes remained fixed on Mabel.

Mabel lips secretly curled up at every greedy glance, and jealous woman around.

They entered the city, and the noise became louder. London overwhelmed every sense, and smoke drifted from hundreds of chimneys.

The smells layered over one another until even Mabel struggled to separate them. Humans truly lived inside disorder.

She watched everything.

She glanced brifely as street performers danced beside beggars missing limbs, and merchants displayed fabrics imported from distant kingdoms.

Her steps slowed when she saw a young woman knelt beside the road. Iron circled her neck.

A chain connected it to three others, and all four wore identical collars. One stumbled, and the man holding the chain struck her immediately.

She didn’t cry.

She simply stood again. Mabel watched them disappear into the crowd. Once again, Mabel noticed they were black.

"What was that?"

Fitzgerald followed her gaze. His expression barely changed. "Slaves. As I told you in the realm."

"That wasn’t how extreme I thought it would look like." She looked at him. "You permit that?"

"It has existed longer than my bloodline."

"You are king." She pointed out.

"I am."

"You could stop it."

His silence answered her.

Mabel looked away. Humans truly fascinated her. They claimed kingdoms, built laws, prayed to a god she doesn’t know, claim to be Saint because they prayed, yet chained one another like animals.

How... Primitive.

The castle finally came into view after a little walk of parade. It dwarfed every building surrounding it.

Massive banners bearing England’s lion crest fluttered above enormous walls. Rows upon rows of soldiers stood waiting.

The soilders were closer to a thousand.

As Fitzgerald approached, the gates opened, and trumpets sounded again.

A herald stepped forward. "His Majesty!"

Every noble inside the courtyard knelt.

Mabel counted quickly.

They were a dozens, and perhaps more than a hundred. They all wore silks, jewels, and gold.

She could tell them to be every important human in England.

Fitzgerald turned slightly toward her. "Ready?"

Mabel straightened. A strand of her dark hair fell over her face from her bun. "I’ve been ready."

He smiled, and fixed her hair. "I expected that answer."

Together, they stepped into England’s royal court. Before Mabel could take another step, a shrill laugh rang across the courtyard.

"Daddy!" A little girl no older than eight burst through the line of kneeling nobles.

Her brown curls bounced wildly as she ran without a single care for royal protocol.

"Princess!" A servant yelled behind her, hoping to catch her before she got to the King. She failed.

She ignored every one of them. The child threw herself into Fitzgerald’s arms, and he caught her effortlessly.

"There you are." He laughed, lifting her against his chest. "Have you been behaving?"

She nodded enthusiastically. "Mostly."

"Mostly?" He raised a brow.

She buried her face against his shoulder and giggled.

Mabel stood perfectly still. Her eyes remained fixed upon them. Then another figure emerged from the palace.

A woman.

Her chestnut hair had been gathered elegantly beneath a jeweled veil, and one hand rested protectively over the enormous swell of her stomach.

She was heavily pregnant. Every step she took was careful, and a maid followed closely behind her, carrying a sleeping toddler wrapped in embroidered blankets.

The little boy stirred sleepily before reaching tiny hands toward Fitzgerald. "Dada..."

Fitzgerald’s entire expression softened.

He handed the little girl to one of the waiting nurses before immediately taking the boy into his free arm.

The pregnant woman smiled warmly.

"You returned safely."

Fitzgerald didn’t glance at her, or even make an effort to acknowledge her. His attention remained on the boy in his arms.

She reached him and gently kissed his cheek. "You worried us."

Fitzgerald hummed with mild irritation that could be seen by everyone around, and pulled out of her reach quickly.

No one seemed surprised, or uncomfortable.

Mabel didn’t move.

Her heartbeat remained steady. Only her thoughts changed. She looked from the woman to the children, then back to Fitzgerald.

For the first time since leaving the Wolf Realm, she was genuinely caught off guard.

He already had a queen. He already had heirs. She suddenly understood there was a piece of the bargain no one had bothered telling her.

Her fingers curled slowly at her sides.

The faint smile she had worn since arriving in England disappeared completely, and something cold settled behind her green eyes.

Mabel realized she might have crossed an ocean, and her realm, only to discover she had been lied to.
