The Triplet Alphas' Forbidden Temptation
Chapter 166: Back to the Alpha’s residenceYuki’s wheelchair was pushed through the hospital’s main entrance and into the warm morning sunlight. The hospital was only beginning to wake, with a few staff members crossing the grounds and patients being escorted towards waiting vehicles. Olivine kept one hand on the wheelchair handles as she guided Yuki towards the car park, while Maverick waited beside the vehicle with the rear door already open.
They had almost reached the car when Yuki’s attention was caught by a conversation nearby. Two paramedics stood beside an ambulance, apparently far too interested in gossip to notice anyone listening.
"Have you heard about the wedding this weekend?" one of them asked excitedly. "Apparently, the entire venue is going to be decorated with moon lilies."
Olivine stopped so abruptly that the wheelchair came to a halt. Yuki lifted her head.
"Moon lilies?" she repeated, disbelief slipping into her voice.
The paramedics continued talking, unaware of them. "I heard Alexander imported them specifically for Lady Aevia," the second paramedic replied with an envious laugh. "Can you imagine? Those flowers are almost impossible to find. They only grow in the ancient forests of Lunaria."
"They’re practically magical," the first one added. "Some people say the petals still carry traces of mana. Most people have only ever seen them in old books."
Yuki stared ahead, her brows drawing together. Moon lilies were not ordinary flowers. They were remnants of a kingdom that no longer existed, treasures people spoke about with the same reverence reserved for ancient artefacts. For Alexander to obtain enough of them to decorate an entire wedding venue was almost unbelievable.
"He must really treasure Lady Aevia," the second paramedic said dreamily. "I mean, who wouldn’t go all out for a woman like her? She’s gorgeous."
"Exactly," the first agreed. "She looks like a Goddess. I’m honestly jealous."
Yuki’s fingers tightened around the edge of her hoodie. Another paramedic joined the conversation, lowering his voice as he glanced around. "I wonder how Estelle is taking all this. Imagine knowing your ex is getting married and seeing how much effort he’s putting into it."
The others laughed quietly. "I’d be devastated," one admitted.
"Estelle is beautiful too," the first paramedic said, though his tone turned thoughtful. "But next to Lady Aevia..." He gave a low whistle. "Only someone as beautiful as Aevia could destroy a marriage like that."
Yuki’s stomach twisted. She knew exactly what he meant. Aevia had been called a homewrecker so many times that Yuki had almost stopped noticing it. Yet hearing strangers reduce her sister to nothing more than a beautiful woman who had used her appearance to steal another woman’s husband still made something inside her ache. She lowered her head and tugged her hoodie farther over her face.
"Olivine," she murmured, keeping her voice quiet. "Let’s go."
Olivine glanced at her, concern flickering across her face, but she didn’t ask questions. She simply resumed pushing the wheelchair. The paramedics’ voices followed them.
"There will always be someone better," one of them sighed.
"Exactly," the other replied. "And honestly, it’s hard not to like someone who looks like her."
"I can’t wait for the wedding," the other chimed in excitedly.
Their voices gradually faded behind Yuki as they moved farther away. The wheelchair stopped beside a sleek black Mercedes V-Class parked near the entrance. The spacious rear cabin offered enough room for Yuki to stretch her legs comfortably without having to squeeze herself into a narrow seat.
Maverick stepped forward immediately and reached for her arm. "Let me help you," he offered.
"I can do it," Yuki replied firmly, giving him a small shake of her head.
She placed both feet on the ground and pushed herself upright. Her legs still felt weak, but they no longer trembled as badly as they had before. Rehabilitation was finally beginning to pay off. Maverick hesitated, watching her carefully. "Are you sure?" he asked.
Yuki gave him a faint smile. "I’m sure."
She took the walking stick Olivine handed her and carefully made her way into the back seat on her own. Once she was settled, Maverick folded the wheelchair and placed it in the rear storage compartment before taking the driver’s seat. Olivine climbed into the passenger seat. Yuki turned towards the window and caught one final glimpse of the paramedics. They were still talking. She looked away as Maverick started the engine.
For the first few minutes, Yuki remained quiet. The conversation outside the hospital kept replaying in her mind, particularly the way they had spoken about Aevia as though her beauty alone had been powerful enough to destroy a marriage.
She lowered her gaze to her hands. Maybe that was how everyone saw her sister. Maybe that was all she would ever be to them. A woman whose beauty had supposedly ruined another woman’s life. The thought left an uncomfortable weight in Yuki’s chest.
Yuki was lost in thought for most of the ride until they got to the city centre. Her breath caught in her throat.
She had underestimated just how much attention Alexander and Aevia’s wedding had attracted until they drove through Raven City. Everywhere she looked, there was something connected to the upcoming ceremony. Billboards displayed photographs of Alexander and Aevia. News screens outside businesses carried updates about the preparations. Even advertisements for wedding-related events had begun appearing throughout the city. Alexander had spared no expense.
Yuki watched the passing screens through the window, her expression thoughtful. How much could someone love a person who wasn’t their fated mate? She couldn’t understand it.
Yet perhaps there was some strange irony in it. A faint smile touched her lips. Maybe it was karma. Alexander had chosen someone other than his mate, and now his sons were doing exactly the same thing. Her smile disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared. She wasn’t sure whether that thought made her feel better or worse.
After a long drive, the Mercedes finally entered the Alpha’s residence. The familiar estate came into view, surrounded by manicured gardens and the bustle of servants preparing for the upcoming wedding. Maverick parked near the main entrance and quickly came around to open Yuki’s door. Yuki reached for her walking stick before he could offer his hand.
"I don’t need the wheelchair," she told him, noticing his glance towards the folded chair.
"You’ve been in the car for a long time," Maverick pointed out gently. "At least let me help you inside."
"I can manage," she insisted.
There was enough determination in her voice to make him stop arguing. Yuki carefully stepped out of the vehicle. Her legs protested at first, but she steadied herself with the walking stick and began making her way towards the entrance.
The moment she stepped into the foyer, she heard Aevia’s familiar voice.
"Move those arrangements to the east wing. No, not there. Alexander specifically asked for them near the entrance. And make sure the flowers aren’t placed directly beneath the vents."
Aevia stood in the centre of the foyer, giving instructions to several servants. She looked radiant. Her hair was perfectly arranged, her clothes elegant without being overly elaborate, and the smile on her face made her seem completely at ease. For a moment, Yuki simply watched her. Despite everything, seeing her sister so happy made something warm settle inside her. Maybe the sacrifices had been worth it after all.
Aevia hadn’t noticed her yet. Yuki shifted her weight and took another step. The uneven tap of her walking stick echoed across the marble floor. Aevia’s voice trailed off, and she turned towards the sound of the approaching footsteps.
"Yuki!"
Aevia hurried towards her, abandoning whatever instructions she had been giving. She wrapped her arms around Yuki carefully, mindful of her injuries.
"Welcome home," she said warmly. "How was the journey back? Were you comfortable in the car?"
Yuki returned the hug with a small smile. "I was fine."
"Are you sure?" Aevia asked, pulling back to examine her face. "You look tired."
"I’m just a little exhausted."
Aevia’s expression softened. "Then go upstairs and rest. Breakfast will be ready soon, and I have a surprise waiting for you," she said.
Yuki’s curiosity immediately surfaced. "A surprise?" Yuki gasped.
Aevia smiled innocently. "Yes."
"What kind of surprise?" Yuki asked, her curiosity eating at her from the inside.
"The kind you aren’t getting out of me," she chimed with a smile.
Yuki narrowed her eyes playfully. "Aevia." Yuki pouted.
Aevia laughed and gently touched her cheek. "No amount of questioning is going to make me tell you."
Yuki sighed, but the smile remained on her lips. "Fine."
"Good girl." Aevia gave her another affectionate pat. "Go and rest. I’ll come for you when lunch is ready."
