"Who cares about him? Useless, stupid, selfish scum..." I muttered irritably as Samuel and I walked to Willow’s room.
I wanted to forget about my hurt feelings. There were simply more important things at hand that I had to worry about than Cassian treating me like shit after he got what he needed from me. He was practically behaving like his usual self, so I shouldn’t have found it difficult to adapt to his natural, jerkass state.
In a nutshell, I should already be used to his self-serving, selfish, hurtful behavior. Which was why it was all the more important for me to find out who actually poisoned Willow, so that once I resolved that threat, I could leave this pack for good and kiss Cassian’s ungrateful ass goodbye.
But still, part of me couldn’t help but curse under my breath. I might have saved Cassian’s life, but I hoped he would spend the rest of it in agony with Violet for company.
Samuel shot me a vaguely concerned look as he watched me stomp towards Willow’s room like a general with a mission.
"If I didn’t know better, I would’ve thought that you’re jealous," Samuel suddenly said to me.
"Me? Jealous?" I said, practically shrieking. When a few passing omegas turned and looked at me, I pursed my lips and cleared my throat before turning back to look at Samuel. "Whyever would you think that? Who would I be jealous of, and what about?"
Samuel shrugged. "That’s something you and I both know the answer to, though I suspect you might deny it to the grave," he calmly said.
I merely scoffed.
"I would advise you to fix that murderous expression on your face and to stop cursing," he said, his tone mild. "Walls have ears here. Also, if anyone else saw you walking to your sister’s room with this much hatred, they’ll suspect you of harming her. Again."
If Samuel was giving me advice, I must look and sound terrible indeed. But there was value in his words.
My brother Cedar was currently guarding Willow’s bedside, and knowing him, he would definitely take offence to the expression on my face, claiming that I was an untrustworthy figure. If that were to happen, he definitely would not leave Samuel and me alone to rummage around Willow’s belongings.
So, I gritted my teeth before schooling my expression into a more unassuming blank wall. "How’s this?"
After a pause, Samuel nodded. "Better. Now you look like you’re ready to attend a funeral, instead of causing one," he said, just in time for us to reach the corridor with Willow’s room.
A few more long strides later, we knocked on her door.
True enough, Cedar’s unimpressed face greeted me the moment the door swung open.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, looking over at me and Samuel suspiciously.
"To breathe in fresh air," I replied sarcastically. "Of course it’s to see my sister."
"Both of you? Why did you come here together?" he continued to hound, narrowing his eyes suspiciously at Samuel. "Where’s Alpha Cassian?"
I rolled my eyes. Surely my brother couldn’t be foolish enough to believe that Samuel and I were having an affair, could he?
Well, maybe. He did have a bad habit of drawing the wrong conclusions.
Samuel was similarly disgusted by the insinuation.
"We were both walking in the same direction," Samuel said firmly. "And I’m here to check on Miss Willow’s condition in my capacity as a healer. You can take this chance to use the restroom, or grab yourself something to eat."
Cedar looked awfully tempted at Samuel’s offer, but he saw me watching him and shook his head fervently.
"Don’t think you can trick me into leaving this room!" Cedar exclaimed. He pointed at me, a sneer forming on his face. "I know what you’re planning. You’re just trying to get me into trouble with Alpha Cassian, like you did earlier! I’m not going to fall for the same trick twice."
"First of all, I wasn’t the one who lured you out of the room the last time. You did that entirely on your own," I said dryly. Since he wasn’t going to leave the room, I was simply going to have to search more discreetly. Forcefully trying to get rid of him would be more suspicious. "But sure, you can stay."
Cedar let out a huff, but he finally stepped aside and waved us inside before closing the door behind our backs. I went straight to Willow’s bedside and held her hand. I didn’t know if it was my imagination or not, but it seemed like it was warmer than before.
I chanced a look at her complexion, and a small, relieved smile grew on my face. My sister was no longer paper pale, almost bloodless. There was a faint hint of colour under her skin.
"Samuel, look! Willow looks a lot better than before!" I exclaimed, gesturing to her.
Samuel strode towards Willow and began examining her with a critical eye, while Cedar and I watched him anxiously. He peeled back her eyelids to shine light into her pupils, and recorded her vital signs and temperature. Finally, he raised his head and nodded approvingly.
"Her condition has shown much improvement since I last saw her," he said. "In fact, I would almost say her recovery is miraculous. At this rate, we might have her awake before the month is over. It seems like her wolf is finally working hard on restoring her body, as it should be."
That was such good news. I was so delighted that I straight up hugged Samuel in relief, wrapping my arms around his body as though I was a hungry octopus, and he my unwilling prey. Willow was going to be fine! She was on the way to waking up, and as long as I kept investigating, she would be safe once she opened her eyes.
"Oh, that’s amazing! That’s incredible!"
"Yes, very much so," Samuel said, his voice slightly muffled due to how tightly I was squeezing him. "Can you let go of me?"
"Right, right," I cleared my throat and removed my arms, stepping away embarrassedly. "I’m just so happy to hear the good news!"
"So happy that you’re hugging another man?" Cedar’s voice interrupted acerbically. He crossed his arms as he glared at me. "You bear Alpha Cassian’s mark on your neck, and yet, here you are, blatantly cheating on him in broad daylight."
"I’m not cheating on him. Besides, even if I was, Cassian is the last person who has any right to complain," I scoffed sarcastically. "Your beloved Alpha Cassian is now happily hugging and kissing Violet as we speak."
Cedar’s eyes bugged out of his skull at my words. "And why would that be a problem?" he snapped. "Alpha Cassian and Luna Violet are bonded as well. She is as much his mate as you are his. Whatever you’re insinuating is just baseless slander."
"Listen, it’s not called slander if it’s true. Besides, I slander him to his face all the damn time!" I pointed out. It wasn’t my fault Cedar’s ears weren’t working properly.
I continued, "Don’t you think it’s awfully hypocritical of you to not even bat an eyelid when Cassian is the one with two active bonds and mates?"
I didn’t bother correcting him. Technically, Cassian didn’t have two active bonds. That would be Rowan. However, dropping that bomb on Cedar right now would just agitate him further and make things even more complicated.
"On the other hand, just because I am friendly with another guy, I’m basically a cheater?" I asked, planting my hands on my hips. "If Violet is his chosen mate, why can’t I choose someone of my own? It’s not as though Cassian is in love with me. I’m far from the only one in his heart."
A tinge of bitterness slipped out of my words. From the corner of my eye, I caught Samuel raising an eyebrow at me.
Cedar’s face reddened at my words. I half-expected him to explode, but he gritted his teeth.
"That’s different," Cedar scowled. "Alpha Cassian is the Alpha of this pack. He is a man, and it’s normal for Alphas to have more than one mate to guarantee strong offspring."
"That’s sexist," I plainly said. "Since you’re such a bootlicker for him, maybe you should check on him. Alpha Cassian was only visiting your dear precious Violet because she claimed to be feeling unwell. Wouldn’t want anything to happen to them, now, would you? Since Cassian is still sick, too."
"In that case, you and Healer Samuel should be the ones headed there," Cedar said.
Samuel didn’t even look back. He continued to scribble in his notepad as he said, "I am currently in the middle of my examinations with Miss Willow. Whatever happens to Alpha Cassian and Luna Violet, they will just have to wait."
I smiled brightly, nodding to show my support.
Cedar pursed his lips before rapidly parting them, looking like he was about to say something. However, he paused, frozen in his movement for a few seconds before eventually closing his mouth. A sneer curved his lips as he glared at me.
