My ears perked up with curiosity, and I couldn’t help but turn my head to the source of the sound. Was an omega servant crying due to stress?
More sobs echoed from the corridor, so much so that it almost sounded like the crier was nearly choking themselves to death with the weight of their tears. There were some indistinguishable sounds, most likely words uttered, but from where I was, I couldn’t hear the full extent of what was spoken.
I could make out, however, that there seemed to be more than one voice. It sounded like a male speaker and a female speaker, with the latter being the one in hysterics. The male speaker, on the other hand, barely said a few words. However, I could hear his deeper tone.
My hand brushed over the marks on my neck, scratching the area. It was starting to tingle a little. The sensation didn’t feel painful by any means, but it was still a little bit uncomfortable.
Rowan’s eyes darted over to my hand, watching my action. Then, he carefully pried my fingers off of my neck, gently letting them go by my side.
"It’ll scar if you scratch it like that," he said. "Is it hurting again? Should I get Samuel?"
"No, it’s fine," I said, shaking my head. "I was just wondering what’s going on..." I trailed off, gesturing towards the two unseen speakers who seemed to be still locked in an intense conversation that I couldn’t catch.
He, on the other hand, seemed to have caught everything perfectly fine. Rowan frowned, his eyebrows knitting tightly together as his lips pursed into a tight line. His expression only made me even more curious about what was going on.
My feet instinctively walked towards the sobbing noises. The person crying sounded so utterly miserable that I instinctively felt pity for them. However, Rowan’s hand gripped my arm tightly.
"Don’t go," he said, holding me back. "It’s not worth it."
"It’s just for a while," I said, craning my head further to try to catch a glimpse of the crier. "I want to know why someone’s crying so badly."
"You want to help them?" Rowan asked, his tone vague. He raised an eyebrow ever so slightly, as though he was deciding what to feel about my decision.
"Huh?" I turned towards him, confused. "I guess so? There’s no reason not to try to help them."
Rowan looked at me for a long moment, holding my gaze with such an intensity that I suddenly felt shy. Was it so difficult for him to believe I cared about pack members as well? My issues were mostly with the Alphas and Violet. As long as the girl crying wasn’t Violet, I would be willing to offer a helping hand.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked, shifting my weight uncomfortably from one foot to another due to the intensity of his stare.
I felt like a specimen placed beneath a microscope with how intensely Rowan seemed to be examining me. Maybe he didn’t want to waste his time with a crying omega. Even if he was a good Alpha who took care of a pack’s overall needs, being a comforting presence was not in his duties, and I couldn’t make him care.
"If you don’t want to come with me, you can just wait here then," I said, trying to pry his hand from my arm. "It won’t take long."
"No. We will go together," Rowan declared haughtily.
To my surprise, his hand drifted down and tightly interlocked his fingers with mine. He held me tightly, and we headed straight ahead.
The closer we got to Willow’s room, the louder the voices became. Soon enough, I could catch the words and properly place a name on the voices before I could even see their figures.
That was when I finally realized why Rowan had been so surprised that I wanted to see what was happening. Perhaps he initially thought that I was able to catch the words spoken and knew who the people were locked in conversation.
Well, he had clearly overestimated my abilities. I groaned internally as the face of the woman I hated the most floated into view.
Violet Sorrel.
And she wasn’t alone. Soren was standing next to her, with an expression on his face that looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but there. I immediately understood why my neck had been feeling uncomfortable earlier.
I took back every charitable thing I had thought earlier about the poor omega crying. Violet crying was nothing short of a miraculous occurrence, and I was a mere mortal, unwilling to interfere in the Moon Goddess’s plans for her. I watched curiously with a hint of schadenfreude, wondering what could have possibly driven Violet to tears in a mere three days when I was unconscious.
Did it have anything to do with Soren?
It must be nothing short of a major catastrophe. A small, gleeful smile hung on my lips as I watched Violet wail into her hands.
"How could you say such a thing?" Violet choked out between sobs. She looked like she wanted to beat Soren’s chest with her fists.
Truthfully, I had never seen her looking so desolate. Her hair was a mess, she had tear tracks racing down both sides of her face, her eyes were red and puffy, and her face was so pale that she looked more like a banshee than a werewolf.
I raised my eyebrows, surprised at how... sloppy she looked.
More often than not, every time I saw Violet, she was dressed to impress. She always had some form of makeup on, even if it was just a bit of lipstick on her lips to bring some form of life back to her face. She took ridiculous pride in her appearance, determined to always look the prettiest among the women even when she was presumably upset or aggrieved.
This time, she looked completely bare and stripped of life. If not for her scent, I would have assumed this was a clone wearing Violet’s face.
Seeing her hysterics, the frown on Soren’s face deepened, and he took a small step away from Violet. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was the one suffering from the effects of poison.
"Was Soren unconscious for three days as well?" I whispered to Rowan, who looked at me with mild amusement. "Or did he get poisoned?"
He shook his head in reply, but didn’t say anything more.
I turned my attention back to the pair, who hadn’t seemed to have noticed us yet.
"Violet, I don’t have the time for this," Soren said, pinching the skin between his eyebrows. He exhaled deeply, frustration painting his features. "Go bother someone else. Please."
"And who am I supposed to look for?" Violet cried.
"I don’t know!" Soren exclaimed, exasperated. "Cassian? Heck, maybe a healer? Goddess knows you need one right now. You’ve gone absolutely insane."
I sucked in a sharp gasp of air through my teeth. While I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid if Cassian had uttered those words, for Soren to have been the one who said them made it all too obvious that he was truly at his wit’s end.
Violet coldly laughed, shaking her head. Her shoulders trembled. She paused suddenly, her cries ceasing for a moment. I held my breath, waiting to see what she would respond.
Finally, she said, "After what happened between us that night, you’re just trying to send me away to Cassian now?" Her voice was much softer than before, rid of all the rabid screaming and heartbroken tears. Yet, it was perfectly controlled, just loud enough for me to catch it.
My eyes widened with surprise. I spun around to look at Rowan, hoping that he had some answers. However, he didn’t meet my gaze. Rowan’s eyes, too, were intensely glued on Soren and Violet’s figures, waiting for Soren’s reply.
Soren’s face grew red with anger as he threw his hands up.
"Nothing happened between us―"
"Why are you denying it now?" Violet cried out, sobbing.
"Because nothing happened," Soren insisted. "No matter how much you cry and sob about it, those are facts that will never change. I’ve already told you before―"
Before Soren could continue speaking any further, a sharp slap echoed down the corridor. Rowan and I gasped at the same time, our eyes wide with surprise as we turned to look at each other. Our shoulders jolted slightly as we watched the scene unfold before us.
On the other hand, Soren’s face was slightly tilted to the side due to the force of the slap. His cheek was slowly turning red, and he moved his tongue to press against the inside of his slapped cheek before coldly exhaling.
For a second, he stilled. Then, his eyes snapped up, quickly locking onto me without hesitation, as if he finally realized that I had been standing there the entire time.
"Briar," he said, his voice breathy.
