Gu Su had just decisively selected the upgrade path for the Soul Summoning Elite. A faint ripple of Undead Energy still lingered at his fingertips, and he was about to raise his hand to cast the Soul Summoning Technique on the remaining Kobold corpses.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he glimpsed the figure of a Skeleton standing proudly atop a tombstone on the eastern side of the great Gravepile.
This Skeleton was a full half-head taller than an Ordinary Skeleton, its posture as straight and proud as a pine. Its bones weren’t the usual gray-white, but instead shone with a lustrous, porcelain-like sheen. They looked dense and hard, their strength clearly far surpassing that of an ordinary skeletal frame.
Its joints were tightly bound with several loops of dark, coarse leather rope, holding its otherwise loose frame firmly together. Each slight turn of its neck or arm produced only a faint, crisp click.
Within its eye sockets danced a cluster of eerie green Soul Fire, its flames faintly streaked with dark red lines. The gaze was deep and piercing, devoid of the usual sluggishness and vacancy of an Ordinary Skeleton. Instead, it radiated the calm and acuity of a seasoned warrior.
Behind it, another Skeleton followed silently. Its form and appearance were starkly different from the one standing on the tombstone; the disparity was obvious at a glance.
This second Skeleton was roughly the size of an Ordinary Skeleton. Its bones were the standard gray-white, but they were exceptionally uniform and smooth. Not a single bone in its body was damaged; even the tips of its fingers were perfectly intact.
Although its joints weren’t reinforced with black leather ropes, they were connected with exceptional tightness. It stood tall and straight, and when it moved, its motions were fluid and agile, showing no signs of stiffness.
The Soul Fire in its eye sockets was a pure, eerie green, yet significantly brighter than that of an Ordinary Skeleton. The flames flickered gently, exuding a sense of vigilance and sharpness, as if it could keenly perceive every surrounding movement.
Gu Su’s gaze sharpened. Upon closer inspection, he realized that each of the two Skeletons carried a small yet conspicuous Battle Banner on its back, which swayed gently in the wind.
The Skeleton standing on the tombstone, however, carried a square Battle Banner. On its pure black surface, a skull clenching a long saber in its teeth was outlined in blood-red. The design was savage and fierce, radiating a bloodthirsty aura. Behind the skull emblem, the red figures ’0/5’ were clearly printed.
The other Skeleton, the one following behind, carried the triangular Battle Banner exclusive to a Minion. Its banner was also pure black with red markings, this one depicting the head of a cobra, reared up with its tongue flicking out. Its blood-red eyes looked exceptionally cold. Next to the cobra head, the red figures ’25/25’ were printed with neat clarity.
Seeing these two distinctly different Battle Banners, Gu Su instantly understood.
’It was obvious. One of these Skeletons was a Minion that had naturally ascended after the fourth pit of the Gravepile filled up. The other was an official Boss, ascended after the entire Gravepile was filled to capacity and reached its maximum Level.’
Gu Su knew that compared to a Minion, which could only lead a handful of soldiers, a Boss like this was a true, official unit for an Undead Mage—one of the core combatants of an Undead Team.
According to the rules of the Undead System, an official Boss could bring 50 elite soldiers of its own. On top of that, it could also command four additional Minions, forming a complete combat squad.
In other words, if the Skeleton Boss standing on the tombstone reached its full complement, it could command a total of 150 soldiers.
However, there was a clear requirement: The troops commanded by a Boss had to be of a uniform unit type. Mixed formations were not allowed.
Just like in Gu Su’s Undead Team, a Boss could either command a full complement of Skeleton Soldiers or lead Walking Dead or Zombies. The same rule would apply to any Ghosts or Vampires that appeared later.
They had to choose only one; mixing them was strictly forbidden, as it would disrupt the Undead Team’s combat rhythm.
Further up the hierarchy of the Undead System was the Hero. A Hero could personally bring 300 soldiers.
Furthermore, a Hero could command seven official Bosses, bringing their total forces to 1,350 soldiers.
However, Heroes differed from Bosses. They weren’t bound by the strict requirement for uniform unit types, allowing for more flexible formations.
A Hero’s forces could be a mix of different unit types; Skeleton Soldiers, Walking Dead, Zombies, Ghosts, and Vampires could all be combined freely.
If a Hero was skilled enough, they could even integrate their Undead Team with living troops to form an even more formidable joint army.
However, for the current Gu Su, the notion of a Hero was still far too distant.
’Right now, I’ve gone to great lengths just to obtain a single official Boss. I haven’t even filled out its basic troop complement. How can I spare a thought for Heroes?’
Gu Su took another careful look at the Attribute Panels of the two Skeletons before him, and his heart finally settled. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips.
’This time, my Luck is really good. The ascended Boss and Minion both have highly practical combat Talents, not support ones. For me, who urgently needs to increase my combat power, this is a godsend.’
[Snake Fang (Level 0, Summoned Creature, Minion): Experience (0/100), Attack 1, Defense 1, Life 10, Talent: Poison Strike].
The Minion, Snake Fang, was a special case. Its core Talent, Poison Strike, was extremely practical.
Not only could it imbue its own attacks with poison, but it could also grant the effect to all soldiers under its command, giving the entire squad a Poison Attack capability.
Furthermore, as Snake Fang’s Level increased, its selection of poisons would become more diverse. Even now, at only Level 0, it already had three different types of poison available for use.
The first was a fast-acting, acute poison that took effect almost instantly, causing an enemy to lose a massive amount of Life in a short period. It was perfect for quickly eliminating single targets.
The second was a paralytic poison that targeted the enemy’s nervous system. It could slow an enemy’s movements and reduce their reaction speed, making it ideal for crowd control in group battles.
The last was a lingering poison that dealt damage over time. Its effects were long-lasting and could continuously drain an enemy’s Life Value, making it suitable for wars of attrition against a Boss.
Snake Fang could flexibly switch between poison types based on the battlefield situation and combat needs, imbuing its troops with the appropriate poison to maximize the squad’s combat effectiveness.
[Bone Forest (Level 0, Summoned Creature, Undead Boss): Experience (0/100), Attack 2, Defense 2, Life 15, Talent: Assassination].
The Undead Boss named Bone Forest, on the other hand, was clearly much more powerful.
Looking at its base Attributes alone, its Attack and Defense were double those of the Minion, and its Life was substantially greater.
Beyond that, the most important aspect was its core Talent: Assassination.
This was a purely offensive Talent. As long as Bone Forest itself, or the troops under its command, attacked an enemy from the flank or rear, they would receive a 25% to 75% bonus to their Attack Power, drastically increasing their damage output.
Furthermore, the percentage of this Attack Power bonus would increase as Bone Forest’s Level rose.
The higher its Level, the more devastating its surprise attacks became, and the more leeway it provided in battle.
It was no exaggeration to say that Bone Forest was a natural-born master of ambushes.
