As he watched the Elite Skeleton Warrior complete its evolution, a glint of satisfaction flashed in Gu Su’s eyes. He then withdrew his gaze, letting it fall back upon the simple cloth-covered stall of the Yin Soul Shop.
The processed flesh was still there, along with the corpse of the Treasure Chest Monster, which had been hammered as flat as scrap metal.
Gu Su bent down and dragged the Treasure Chest Monster’s corpse in front of him. He tapped a finger against the dented body of the chest. At first, he just thought about finding a thick wooden stick to pry the deformed chest open and see what was hidden inside.
But the thought had barely formed when he suddenly paused, a more practical idea floating to the surface.
He looked up at his subordinate, who was squatting by the fence not far away, busy repairing a damaged section with scraps of metal. He raised his voice and called out, "Tooth Bone, come over here for a moment."
Hearing the summons, Tooth Bone immediately put down the iron hammer and metal scraps in his hands. He moved quickly but not frantically, trotting over to Gu Su and bowing slightly, ready for orders. The eerie green Soul Fire in his eye sockets shone with meticulousness and respect. "My lord, you have an order?"
Gu Su pointed to the Treasure Chest Monster’s corpse at his feet and gave it a push toward Tooth Bone. "Take a look at this thing. Can you fix it?"
Tooth Bone quickly bent down and lifted the Treasure Chest Monster’s corpse. First, he gently tapped various spots on the chest with his knuckles, listening to the dull thuds to determine if the internal structure was still intact.
Next, his fingertips carefully traced the dents and rust spots, gliding over every irregular mark left by the hammer.
He then peered into a crack, the eerie green Soul Fire in his eye sockets focusing slightly as he carefully examined the internal lock and cavity. He even extended a slender finger bone to cautiously pick away the lingering wood splinters and rust flakes from the opening.
After checking it repeatedly for a moment, he slowly straightened up and gave Gu Su a slight nod. "My lord, this can be repaired. It’s just... My lord, is it necessary to repair it?
Even if I restore the chest to perfect condition, the items hidden inside won’t change. It would be easier to just pry it open."
"Fix it. It must be fixed."
Gu Su’s tone was decisive. His gaze swept over the various materials piled messily near the tent not far away.
Crates of Wood, Stone, Metal, bones, and Leather were all stacked there haphazardly, completely disorganized.
And his Plague Cutter was just sitting on top of these crates.
His Gold Coins and other things were stored inside the tent.
It was safe to say he currently had no warehouse to store supplies, nor any cabinets for smaller items.
His only metal cabinet had already been dismantled to repair the wall. The Treasure Chest Monster’s corpse, however, was now looking like a good option.
Gu Su estimated that it could hold a decent amount of things inside.
’I have too much stuff on hand right now, and it’s all just piled up everywhere. I’m in dire need of a container.’
His mind was already made up. If he could get the Treasure Chest Monster’s corpse repaired, he could figure out a way to attach a pair of wheels to it later. Then, when he went out to gather Resources, he wouldn’t have to carry all the miscellaneous materials and items in his arms.
Dragging the chest along would save energy and prevent items from being lost. It would be far more convenient than carrying things by hand.
"I understand, my lord. I will go and repair it at once."
Tooth Bone asked no more questions. He responded respectfully and bent down to pick up the Treasure Chest Monster’s corpse.
But just as he straightened up to turn and leave, the corner of his eye caught sight of the dark mass of flesh on the Yin Soul Shop’s stall. The Soul Fire in his eye sockets brightened slightly. He hesitated for a moment before mustering the courage to look at Gu Su. "My lord, that mass of flesh... could you give it to me?"
Gu Su was slightly taken aback, and a little surprised. Tooth Bone had always been calm and reserved, focusing solely on his repair work. He rarely made requests, so today was an exception.
He waved his hand, his tone casual. "Take it. It’s not like I have any use for it right now, anyway.
But what do you need it for?"
"My lord, I’m still trying to repair the music box that the Suburban Wolf Squad recovered from the collapsed building."
Tooth Bone quickly explained, a note of confidence in his voice, "That mass of flesh was refined with Yin Qi. Its texture is special, and it might be just what I need to repair the music box. It could possibly get it working again."
’A music box?’
Gu Su paused, stunned for a moment, before he slowly recalled it.
There really was such an item.
Yesterday, Gu Su had rushed back unexpectedly, so the search of the Vine Mansion hadn’t been completed. They had only noted a few strange rooms.
Later, when Suburban Wolf led a team to search the Vine Mansion, they brought back a few things, and the music box was one of them.
Even though the music box was damaged, it was still of Green Quality. That had surprised him for a long time back then, but with so many other things to deal with afterward, he had put the matter out of his mind. He never expected that Tooth Bone had remembered it all this time and was still trying to figure out how to fix it.
Learning that the Green Quality music box could potentially be repaired, Gu Su felt a surge of delight.
He waved his hand again, his tone brisk. "Alright, take it. Do a good job. If you can fix it, that’s one more useful item for us."
"Thank you, my lord!"
The Soul Fire in Tooth Bone’s eyes grew even brighter. He hurried forward and carefully cradled both the Treasure Chest Monster’s corpse and the mass of flesh in his arms. He then turned with a light step and headed toward his repair area, as if afraid of wasting a single moment.
Gu Su then turned his head toward the Deceitful Tree. "Crow’s Caw, what’s the situation? Any news?"
The words had barely left his mouth when a steady voice drifted from between the branches of the Deceitful Tree. "My lord, we are White Crows, not networked computers. Even if there is news, we have to wait for our comrades on scouting duty to fly back before we can tell you. How could there be a reply so quickly?"
Hearing this, Gu Su found it a bit amusing. ’Right. I’m getting muddled from the rush.’
The White Crows relied entirely on flying back and forth to relay messages; there was no way for them to transmit information instantly.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, his tone softening a bit as he gave his orders to Crow’s Caw, "Alright, my mistake. I got ahead of myself. I’m going to go to the tent to sleep for a bit.
Wake me up when scouting reports come in, or in an hour."
With that, Gu Su headed toward the tent. As he passed by the Yin Fire Heap, he tossed a cleaned chicken into the pot on top and added some water.
This was to be Gu Su’s breakfast for later.
As for other seasonings, Gu Su added some salt, but that was it.
After all, humanity had been gone from this world for many years.
Most usable things had already decayed.
Only something like salt, which doesn’t spoil easily, could be preserved.
’Just having something to eat is good enough for now.’
’I’ll think about finding something tastier to eat after I get back.’
Gu Su stretched, pushed open the tent flap, and collapsed heavily onto the small bed inside, closing his eyes immediately.
