The Unlimited Ascension: Reborn as an Extra
Chapter 184: The Highest PotentialAs the seconds ticked by, Alen moved forward toward the handsome man, ready to kill him instantly when the trial actually started. But his steps halted while looking up at the man. Suddenly, a wild thought came into his mind as he remembered the exact wording of the trial. Since the system didn’t specifically mention the target person, and the time limit was only one single second, it couldn’t be an impossible task. The Ascension Realm wouldn’t give a task which is impossible for an Ascender to complete.
’Could it be that...’
[Ding! Trial: Kill the Person with the Highest Potential, Begins!]
As the second passed and the trial finally began, without even thinking for a millisecond, Alen drove the dagger up and slashed his own neck immediately. He forcibly burst out his Crimson Essence from the inside. A massive blast exploded his entire body as skin and bones flew outward. His internal organs failed, and he died in a matter of a single second.
"..."
Silence.
*ROARR!!!*
Suddenly, the eerie silence was broken by the loud, chaotic screams of the war zone. Everyone started to attack each other as the war resumed. The warriors started to fight and kill each other, entirely unaware of the time pause from earlier.
A short distance away from them in a relatively safe place, hidden behind a giant boulder, a different manifestation silver-haired boy suddenly gasped. He fell to his knees in horror while clutching his whole body and neck, feeling the pain of his own demise.
"Haah... Haah... Haah... F*ck! I almost feel like I died again... Or more appropriately, I really did die..."
He stayed kneeling in horror as the screams of war echoed through the entire battlefield.
He looked straight ahead, not knowing if he had actually passed the trial or not. He suddenly had a stroke of insight. He hadn’t taken note of himself as a person present in the area. The quest couldn’t just give one second of time to search an entire battlefield. And it didn’t ask for the strongest Awakener, but actually the Awakener with the highest potential. It was impossible for him to find out. Yes, checking beauty was one way to guess it, but even that had several flaws. From other people’s perspectives, the beauty standard might be different from his own; there is no universal beauty standard existing in the world. Yes, there may be certain people whose looks everyone likes, but there are also some people who attract specific tastes. So to find anyone based purely on their looks was too biased.
But even then, there was no other way to find out the talented person. He also didn’t have some kind of overpowered golden finger similar to some novel which would help him appraise the opponents, so there was no way for him to know that.
Unless the person whose talent was mentioned was actually him.
He thought carefully. He hadn’t actually ever considered his own talent. It had been mentioned as ’Unknown’ on his status window. He always thought it was because he was a transmigrator, which was why his talent was difficult to measure, but he hadn’t ever given it a deeper thought.
After training with Lyris and traveling with his different companions, he learned one single thing. His comprehension was far better than anyone else’s. Not insanely overpowered so that he could just learn some skill or ability by seeing it once, but enough for him to learn a little about that skill or ability and develop it to use with his own mind and unique techniques.
He had never faced a growth limit or felt that he couldn’t learn something as if it was beyond his comprehension. Whatever he had ever tried—whether it was skills, abilities, combat techniques, or even the complex uses of elements—after giving enough time to learn, he learned it efficiently and consistently.
Even now that he thought about it, he felt a sense of awe for himself. After transmigrating into this world, he was totally unaware of concepts like mana, elements, and everything else. Of course, he had read about it in novels and watched it in anime, but that was not enough for a normal person to actually use it in reality. At some point, he had learned those things so rapidly and effectively that even he was unaware of his own speed.
He should have been a newbie who didn’t know anything about this world, and he might have died the second after coming here. But he didn’t. What could be the reason? Was some kind of supreme being behind his survival? Or was someone actively overseeing all of his work and his journey? Was that the same being who had transmigrated him here? Are they actually gods or deities? He didn’t know, but after so long, realizing that his whole presence was such a bizarre anomaly in the world, he actually felt afraid for the first time. Not afraid of dying, not afraid of staying alone, but afraid of being watched by others.
’Could it be that I am inside some kind of anime or novel which is being overseen by others, and I am just surviving because of plot armor?...’
He didn’t know. But whatever it really was, he couldn’t stop now. He had been given the rare opportunity to choose a different path in this life, and now that he got that, he wouldn’t just sit still because he was afraid of being watched by other gods. It could also be possible that all of it was just his own illusion; he couldn’t be sure. The only thing he could focus on now was growing stronger. So strong that he wouldn’t have to be afraid of anyone. Even the gods should be afraid of his own presence.
He forced his body to stand up with the support of the boulder on his back, and he steadied his trembling legs. Just as he stretched his body to vanish the stiffness in his muscles, the system chimes rang again.
[Ding! The Trial ’Kill the Person with the Highest Potential’ has been successfully completed!]
[Distributing rewards according to contribution rate...]
He looked at the system chimes, and his shoulders finally slumped in massive relief. His wild guess and his decision were actually right.
’Thank god. If I had killed that bulky bastard earlier, I would have been stuck in this realm forever...’
He dismissed the nonsensical thoughts as he focused on the reward he was going to get. He expected a good reward which might help him in the future.
[Ding! Your overall stats have been increased significantly!]
[Ding! Your mana capacity has been increased!]
[Ding! Your affinity with the ’laws’ of the ’world’ has been increased significantly!]
[Ding! You have obtained a legendary item, the ’Ring of Transference’!]
[Item: Ring of Transference (Legendary Artifact)]
[Description: A relic imbued with the essence of spatial manipulation, allowing the wearer to instantaneously teleport short distances. Charges replenish over time.]
[Daily Charges: 3/3]
[Charge Replenishment Rate: 1 charge every 24 hours]
[Condition: The destination of the teleportation should be at least once visited during the time when the host wore the ring.]
[Ding! Your understanding about yourself has deepened!]
[Ding! Your comprehension speed has skyrocketed!]
[Ding! Your understanding about your ’path’ has been increased!]
...
As Alen stood there staring at his rewards, he couldn’t help but smile. It was fantastic that he got such an artifact. To instantly teleport out of trouble when he needed it the most was a lifesaver. He knew he was a walking trouble-magnet, always attracting unwanted attention to himself, but thanks to the artifact, he could avoid that in most situations.
Suddenly, he felt like his mind had been cleared, as if any impure thoughts had been washed away. All of the chaotic, nonsensical thoughts vanished from his brain, and he blinked in confusion, feeling like the world around him became far clearer than before.
’Is it because of the understanding about myself? What kind of phenomenon is it? Damn, it is really awesome.’
He focused on the environment in awe, feeling as though he just got something which others couldn’t ever hope to have.
’So it means I am more talented than I can ever think of. Ahem! Let’s not get ahead of myself. I should focus on the current situation.’
Suddenly, just before him, the space tore open. Two giant whirlpools opened through the fabric of space. One was a red portal which would lead him to the next trial—the final one of this stage for him. The other was a green portal which would lead him to the outside world, back to Asterion.
Without hesitation, he walked toward his already decided gate. Not the green one, but the red one. He didn’t come here to spend his time in leisure, and he shouldn’t waste his time much in the real world when he didn’t have anything else to do besides training. It wasn’t like he had friends to spend his time with back there. So instead of lagging behind others, he should move forward. He already knew that whenever he returned to the outside world, he definitely got into some kind of trouble. He remembered his past history enough to judge that, so he didn’t underestimate his own bad luck.
Without hesitation, he stepped right inside the red gate, leaving the bloody battlefield of the Warzone behind. The giant whirlpool vanished as his presence was gone, and the space returned once again to normal.
