"He’s waiting for you."

A man dressed like a butler slightly bowed before me and Ashlyn, while motioning me to enter the room.

I nodded at him before giving Ashlyn a brief glance.

The girl had asked me quite a few questions regarding Syma, which I had simply ignored, knowing that giving any answer would be counterproductive given Ashlyn’s intentions that didn’t seem to be as simple as they appeared on the surface.

Moving closer to the door, the butler opened it for me, before I stepped into the room, and—

Click.

The door behind me was closed the moment my body fully entered the room.

"I would have never expected to meet a Frost in such a way."

As usual, two huge sofas were arranged in the middle of the room, with a small table containing refreshments placed between them.

Looking at Damian, the duke was seated with his legs elegantly crossed as he drank some type of beverage from a transparent glass, while raising it in my direction as if to toast to my arrival.

Even while being seated, Damian’s presence was imposing, with a subtle aura spreading from his body, making me raise my brow in return.

It wasn’t mana pressure but something closer to it.

"Well... if you were good at your expectations, then your duchy wouldn’t have to suffer like how it does these days."

"..."

My statement might not have been the most diplomatic, but I just felt like giving a proper reply.

Damian simply smiled at my words, before motioning me to take a seat.

"Your information network seems strong, or were you informed by your friends in Syma?"

Hm?

Damian asked the question with a knowing smirk on his face, but I, on my part, couldn’t understand what he was referring to.

Still, knowing that being confused would result in an unfavourable impression of me, which was never a good thing while forging a deal... I managed a smile of my own, looking into Damian’s eyes as if I knew what he was talking about.

Honestly, I should have visited a branch of Syma before meeting Damian, so as to be informed about all the latest happenings in the world.

Being unable to contact D.X. through the academy was an issue that hadn’t been solved yet.

There were many ways to bypass the monitoring of the academy while sending encrypted messages that were hard to intercept and decipher, but that came with their own shortcomings... as sending encrypted messages was a surefire way to arouse suspicion.

Why would a student even need to send encrypted messages for?

It would have been a good thing, had I still been a heir of the Frosts and was then communicating with my family.

Even if my messages would have aroused suspicion, after tracking their destination... it would have led to the Frosts, thereby stopping the academy from further investigations, as the academy wasn’t some prison for the students.

They were free to do whatever they wanted to, but in my case... I had no interest in letting even a percent of my connections to D.X. be revealed due to my negligence.

Even if I sent the message to Syma, and despite me wanting to reveal my relations with them... it was a risky thing to bypass the academy’s monitoring system only to communicate with Syma, which would arouse even more suspicions.

Still, I had to find some way or else... my understanding of the world’s affairs would always lag behind.

It had been a few seconds since Damian had asked his question, but my only response had been staring into his eyes without saying a word.

I couldn’t risk speaking something and reducing my edge in the negotiations, as whatever Damian was referring to felt like something of great importance for the duchy.

The silence between us stretched for long, prompting Damian to give out a chuckle to fill the void.

"You sure are a reserved one."

"..."

I didn’t respond, as I had an instinctive feeling that Damian genuinely believed I was already in the know of what had happened with the duchy.

At first, I had the thought that he was testing me, but that didn’t seem to be the case anymore.

"But there is something that I can’t get my head around... despite knowing that the authorities have their suspicions over our duchy, and we might even become a scapegoat for them to quell the anxiety of the public... why would you still want to make a deal with us?"

It took quite a bit of my willpower to control the expressions over my face.

Suspicions... scapegoat...

The words made me realise what Damian might have been referring to.

When Julien had first decided to initiate our plans from the attack on the Levaith duchy, it wasn’t out of some grand reason, but a simple way of elimination while choosing the target.

The Levaiths were strong enough to be noticed by the world, but not strong enough to be a threat to us like the other major powers in the world.

That was why their auction house was the first to be attacked, to sow the seeds of chaos... to make the world think that the cults had begun to become active far earlier than the attack on Syma, and the authorities had failed to take the necessary precautions in time.

Over the days after the raid on the auction house, the matter had begun to settle a bit, and coupled with that was the attack on Syma all across the world, which had made the world forget about the Levaiths... but now—

It didn’t seem to be the case anymore.

But how?

And—

Why?

Why would the authorities target the Levaith duchy out of nowhere?

Were they really trying to create a scapegoat to avoid being humiliated before the world as an incompetent organization?

I never thought the authorities would fall so low, but thinking again, maybe... they had some justifiable reason to do so.

As for what that reason was, I would have to inquire about it at the guild to know the situation in more detail.
