He looked at Leo directly.

"Okay, fine. You said that your ability is to boost the capabilities of monsters, right?"

Leo nodded.

"Well, tell me more about this," Adrian said. "Do you use your own mana to enhance these monsters? And is this buff permanent or temporary?"

Leo thought about it for a second before he just shook his head.

"I don’t really know," Leo admitted. "I just used it on a goblin once back in that cave, and apart from that, I have never used it on anything else. But it does consume my mana. My system screen shows that I currently have ten mana."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Ten mana?" Adrian repeated. "That’s roughly equivalent to a freshly awakened F-rank knight. Tell me more about this system of yours."

Leo nervously looked at his invisible system screen floating in front of him before looking back at Adrian.

"Well, all I see is my name and my basic stats," Leo explained. "It doesn’t really show standard things like strength, agility, or intelligence. All I see is Mana, Vitality, and Body Constitution. Apart from those three terms, I literally see nothing else."

Adrian nodded again. "Okay, fine. What else is on there?"

"There’s also something called Level," Leo added. "Currently, my level is One."

"Levels, huh?" Adrian muttered.

He looked over at Wang Lei. Wang Lei just nodded in confirmation.

"Okay then," Adrian said, standing up. "Let’s test out something before we try to level you up."

Leo felt a sudden spike of suspicion. He looked at Adrian closely.

"Wait, are you from Earth too?" Leo asked.

Adrian just smiled.

"Well, I am from this planet, but I have the knowledge of Earth," Adrian lied effortlessly.

Leo still wasn’t really convinced, but he was way too scared to argue, so he just accepted the answer.

Adrian snapped his fingers.

A glowing portal appeared in the middle of the tent. A few seconds later, a small creature hopped out of the portal and landed on the floor.

It was a small black bird, roughly the size of a crow but it had pure white eyes. It almost looked like a dead bird that was currently being possessed by a ghost.

Adrian pointed at the bird.

"Why don’t you use your ability on this?" Adrian asked.

Leo nodded nervously. "Okay."

He raised his hand and activated his ability. He watched his mana pool drop from ten down to to zero.

The crow suddenly screeched loudly.

Its small body immediately bulged slightly, increasing its total size by around ten percent and it’s talons grew visibly sharper and much longer. But it didn’t go crazy. It just looked around the room as if everything was perfectly normal.

Leo stared at it, completely shocked. He fully expected the bird to go berserk and jump at them, but nothing happened. The bird just fluttered its wings and flew up to land peacefully on Adrian’s outstretched arm.

Adrian casually patted the mutant bird on its head.

"Well, looks like it works," Adrian noted.

Leo’s eyes went wide.

"Wait, do you have the ability to control monsters?" Leo asked in sheer disbelief.

Adrian smiled as he continued to gently pat the bird. "Yes, I do. There are certain conditions that must be fulfilled first, but you don’t have to think about that right now. It is none of your concern."

He looked back at Leo.

"So for now, we need to raise your level," Adrian said. "Here. Kill this bird."

Adrian flicked his wrist. The bird immediately fluttered over to Leo and landed right in front of the kid’s feet, staring up at him with its pure white eyes.

Leo looked at the bird, and then looked back up at Adrian in a panic.

"How?" Leo stammered. "How do I kill this bird?"

Adrian just shrugged.

"Just grab it by the head and fling it around," Adrian said casually. "Its neck will break and it’ll die instantly. It’s similar to killing a chicken the old-school way. I actually learned it from my townsfolk. They taught me that it is a really good way of killing a chicken without having to use a knife and make a bloody mess everywhere since they move around a lot when you cut their necks."

Adrian paused, looking slightly thoughtful.

"That is how they usually kill chickens without using weapons," Adrian continued. "But honestly, I still prefer just cutting the neck and draining the blood off instead of adding an extra step. If you just hold the chicken tight enough, there won’t be any issues."

Leo just nodded blankly.

He didn’t understand why Adrian was suddenly telling him so much about the intricacies of slaughtering poultry. He had never even asked Adrian how he preferred to kill a chicken.

But Leo still nodded rapidly out of fear that he might piss Adrian off if he didn’t agree.

He slowly extended his trembling hand toward the bird’s head.

Before he could grab it, Adrian burst into laughter.

"Ahahahahahha! I was just joking," Adrian chuckled. "Here, take this."

Adrian pulled a small hunting knife from his belt and tossed it over.

Leo caught the knife awkwardly. He kneeled down, brought the blade to the bird, and quickly sliced its neck.

The bird struggled for a few seconds, flailing its wings around on the floor before finally going completely limp.

Leo gasped, and his eyes flew wide open.

He looked up at Adrian, his face glowing with excitement.

"It actually worked!" Leo yelled. "It actually worked! I gained a bit of experience!"

Adrian nodded.

"Good," Adrian said. "That bird was a real monster, but you should be able to level up well if you go inside an actual dungeon. For now, why don’t you just stay here for a while? Once we finish up this war and get back to Oresfall, you can level up as much as you want. Or actually... maybe you can just do it while you’re here."

Adrian raised his hand and snapped his fingers.
