Reiji turned his head lazily. A soldier rushed into the room, breathing hard. The man’s face was deeply flushed and there was a thin sheen of sweat coating his forehead. It wasn’t quite fear, but it was incredibly close.
It was pure nervous energy.
"Oh great hero," the soldier said, bowing slightly to catch his breath. "The enemies have started marching toward our camp. The size of their army is much bigger than last time. Most of them have large shields and are wearing full sets of heavy plate armor."
The soldier hesitated.
"They look a little intimidating."
Reiji just chuckled. He waved his hand dismissively at the panicked man.
"We have this guy on our side," Reiji said, pointing a thumb at the silent white-robed man. "There’s no need to worry. You’ve already seen what he’s capable of doing."
The soldier nervously glanced at the white-robed man. He visibly relaxed just a little bit.
"Yes. I do know what he’s capable of," the soldier admitted. "But what should we do now?"
Reiji shrugged his shoulders.
"Well, you’re the temporary commander, right?" Reiji asked. "Just do whatever you think is right. Or do you not know how things work around here?"
The soldier straightened his posture immediately.
"Yes. I will do as the previous general usually did," the soldier replied. He paused and looked back at Reiji. "Are you not going to join us on the front line?"
Reiji didn’t answer right away. He turned his head, pulled the girl on his right directly toward him, and kissed her roughly on the lips.
He held her there for a few seconds before finally pulling away. He wiped his mouth and smirked at the soldier.
"I’ll join you in a bit."
The white-robed man stood up from his wooden chair without making a sound. He walked over to the soldier waiting near the door.
"I’m coming," the white-robed man said.
He paused right at the doorway and glanced back over his shoulder at Reiji.
"You are immature, irresponsible, and completely disgusting."
Reiji immediately stiffened. A dark frown spread across his face as he leaned forward in his seat and glared at the man.
"Just mind your own business, man," Reiji snapped angrily. "Don’t forget that you’re the one who’s using my army for whatever your goal is. You might be providing support, but it’s my men who are out there dying today. So you do not have the right to stand there and judge."
The white-robed man shook his head slowly.
"I am judging you, not your army," the man replied coldly. "Your men are fighting and you are not. So what makes you think that you deserve any respect?"
He turned around and walked out into the camp before Reiji could even formulate a response. The soldier quickly followed behind him and pulled the door shut as if he had no respect for Reiji too.
Silence filled the large canteen.
Reiji stared at the closed door for a long moment. His hands slowly curled into tight fists on top of the table.
He suddenly slammed his palm against the wood hard enough to make the juice glass rattle and topple over, spilling the juice all over the table and onto the girl’s dress.
The two girls flinched backward in terror.
Reiji slowly turned his head and looked at them. His eyes were dark with bruised ego and rage... rage that was completely misplaced.
The girls had their own valid reasons to be scared of him.
A few minutes later, the soldiers standing guard outside the canteen heard the screams.
Adrian’s massive army marched forward across the open plains.
It took them almost forty minutes of steady marching to finally get within the effective range of the enemy archers. But this time, Adrian’s army didn’t slow down or stop to form a rigid shield wall.
They just raised their shields and kept marching.
A rain of arrows whistled down from the Avarice Kingdom’s defensive lines.
The projectiles arced through the sky and slammed down toward the Oresfall soldiers, but they didn’t even touch the shields. The heavy iron shields weren’t just standard issue anymore. Thanks to Adrian’s direct involvement with the help of his dungeon, they had been slightly upgraded.
The arrows stopped in mid-air right before hitting the metal. It was almost like a faint layer of telekinesis was catching them. The kinetic energy was instantly completely absorbed by the shield’s embedded runes, and the arrows just harmlessly dropped into the ground.
The Oresfall soldiers completely ignored the volley of arrows and just continued marching step by step, closing the distance.
The soldiers on Reiji’s side frantically continued raining arrows down, but seeing that their attacks literally had zero effect, they couldn’t help but feel a deep, creeping sense of fear.
They turned to look at the temporary commander standing behind their lines.
The young soldier was already sweating bullets. It was painfully clear that he had no real commanding experience. He might have been one of the strongest knights in their camp, but he was young and severely under-qualified to lead an army.
Seeing their own commander looking so nervous and terrified instantly infected the rest of the Avarice soldiers. Their morale plummeted in a matter of seconds.
But that was when they heard the voice.
The white-robed man suddenly levitated off the ground. He rose high into the sky above the Avarice camp, throwing his arms out wide to the sides.
His voice boomed across the entire battlefield, completely overriding the sound of the Oresfall war drums.
"I am the Apostle of the Goddess of Iron and Steel!" the man roared. "I am here to deliver divine judgment upon the man who claims to be the Blessed of Prosperity!"
A blinding golden glow suddenly erupted from the white-robed man and washed over all of the Avarice soldiers.
Adrian just watched the spectacle from the front lines. He stared straight up at the floating so-called ’Apostle’ and narrowed his eyes.
