Chapter 729: Chapter 729: This is a Test

Sheryl Sawyer saw how heartbroken Lucy Summers looked, and her own heart ached so much she wanted to cry.

"Lulu, what did you hear?"

"It turns out... it turns out I really was bought." Lucy Summers choked out. "It turns out they have savings, and they’re planning to buy a house for my little brother when he comes of age, and make me pay the mortgage."

Sheryl Sawyer’s brow tightened. "How could they do that?" she said indignantly.

"They have savings to buy their son a house, but not enough money to send you to college?" Michelle Fuller looked completely speechless. "I suspect you’ve been PUA’d."

Renee Jennings thought for a few seconds, then asked softly, "Lulu, did they see you?"

"No." Lucy Summers sniffled and shook her head. "I was changing my shoes. They were eating dinner."

"I just had an idea," Renee Jennings said, looking at Lucy Summers. "Do you want to hear it?"

Lucy Summers nodded. "Okay."

Renee Jennings glanced around. "Let’s talk somewhere else."

Lucy Summers led them to her childhood secret hideout, a place she would always come to when she was sad.

It was a small corner of the children’s activity center. She would squat by the bushes and watch the little kids play, and sometimes, just watching them would cheer her up.

But Lucy Summers hadn’t expected that four adults standing here would look so crowded and strange.

However, no one seemed to mind.

Renee Jennings’s lips moved, and she spoke slowly. "What Lulu just heard is enough to prove one thing."

Her gaze fell on Lucy Summers. "Your parents don’t love you as much as you think."

When Lucy Summers heard this, her nose stung and her eyes burned betrayingly hot.

Sheryl Sawyer hesitated for a few seconds, then gently placed a hand on her shoulder in silent comfort.

"Lulu, what are you thinking right now?" Renee Jennings asked.

"I... I don’t know," Lucy Summers said, biting her lip. "My heart feels like a mess, and my mind is all jumbled."

Renee Jennings: "Then how about you hear my proposal?"

Lucy Summers looked at her and nodded. "Okay."

"Your father losing his job might be true, and we won’t judge the reasons why," Renee Jennings said gently. "But the fact that they have savings means that they could have afforded to send both of you to college back then."

"But your parents didn’t do that. Your mother even suggested you quit school and get a job to ease the family’s financial burden."

"You refused, so your parents started working at a construction site, leaving early and coming home late. Because your heart ached for them, you voluntarily gave up your chance to go to college."

As Lucy Summers listened, tears streamed down her cheeks.

It was like she suddenly understood.

’My parents going to work at the construction site, dragging their exhausted bodies home every day... it was most likely to force my hand...’

’Why? Why would they do that?’

’Is it because I’m not their biological child?’

’But if they didn’t want to love me, why did they buy me in the first place? Why pretend to love me so much? Why not just be open about all their scheming?’

Lucy Summers sobbed, "They never loved me at all, did they...?"

Even though Renee Jennings’s heart ached for Lucy Summers, she had to make her face reality.

"You’re grown up now. Their goal in raising you has been achieved. They’re starting to find ways to use you, to profit from you. Have you sensed that?"

Lucy Summers pressed her lips together and nodded with difficulty.

"Do you want to find out if they’re worth your continued care and concern?" Renee Jennings asked.

Lucy Summers wiped away her tears, her voice thick. "I do."

"In that case, we can’t pretend to be your coworkers later," Renee Jennings said, winking at her.

Michelle Fuller asked curiously, "Then what do we pretend to be?"

Renee Jennings’s lips curled into a slight smile. "Creditors."

"Huh?" Lucy Summers asked in surprise. "What do you mean?"

Renee Jennings: "We pretend you broke something valuable of ours and have to pay us back. You can’t come up with the money, so you run home to hide, but we chase you down."

The moment Michelle Fuller heard this, she lit up. She loved this kind of drama. "I get it! I’m great at this kind of acting!"

Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow. "Alright. If Lulu agrees, we’ll let you take the lead."

"Lulu, what do you think?" Michelle Fuller asked, her eyes wide with anticipation as she looked at Lucy Summers.

Lucy Summers frowned, hesitating for a moment before slowly nodding. "I... I don’t have any objections."

’It’s a kind of test, I guess.’

’But I feel like I can already predict the outcome.’

’Human nature can’t withstand being tested.’

"Okay, let’s find a place to eat first," Renee Jennings suggested. "Then, Lulu, you go home to see your parents. If they ask why you’re back so suddenly, don’t answer. Just tell them that if anyone comes looking for you, they should say they don’t know you."

Lucy Summers agreed seriously. "Okay, I understand."

Worried about running into acquaintances, Lucy Summers sat at a separate table when they went to eat.

After eating, Lucy Summers went home alone first.

Sheryl Sawyer watched her thin, frail figure go, her eyes filled with heartache.

"This must be incredibly painful for Lulu," Renee Jennings said with a sigh.

Michelle Fuller nodded. "It’s so hard. God can be really cruel sometimes."

Sheryl Sawyer pressed her lips together, not saying a word, but she silently made a promise to herself: she had to be twice as good to her Sweetie.

Lucy Summers walked down the road, completely distraught. Memories of the past flashed through her mind, frame by frame, like a movie.

In that moment, it was as if she were an outsider, and she suddenly saw so many things with clarity.

But she still couldn’t accept it. The family she loved so deeply weren’t her real parents, and they had raised her only for their own gain.

As Lucy Summers walked, she suddenly squatted down and broke into convulsive sobs.

Passersby cast curious or sympathetic glances her way.

Lucy Summers cried into her hands for a while before someone gently tapped her on the shoulder.

She looked up with blurry, tear-filled eyes and heard a surprised voice say, "Lulu, it really is you!"

The speaker was Lucy Summers’s aunt.

Lucy Summers wiped her tears, stood up, and greeted her, "Second Aunt."

"Aren’t you working in Lynfell? Why are you squatting here crying? Did someone bully you out there?" the Second Aunt asked with concern.

Lucy Summers shook her head. "I’m fine."

"You were crying your eyes out just now, how can you be fine? If something’s wrong, you have to tell us. We can figure it out together."

"I’m really fine. Second Aunt, I’ll talk to you next time. I’m heading home now." After saying that, Lucy Summers turned and ran.

"That child!" The Second Aunt frowned, pulling out her phone and scrolling through her contacts.

"You said Lulu’s back?" Mrs. Summers asked in surprise when she got the call from her cousin. "Are you sure you didn’t see things? Lulu didn’t say she was coming back."

"That girl has definitely gotten into some trouble! I just saw her crying her eyes out..."

"Did she say why she was crying?"

"She didn’t. I was about to ask her why when she ran off. You should hurry back and see if she’s home."

"Alright, I got it." Mrs. Summers hung up and turned to Mr. Summers. "Jane saw Lulu crying on the side of the road. Why do you think she’d suddenly come home without a word?"

Mr. Summers frowned. "She must have been wronged somehow out there. You should hurry home and check on her."
