Sunset (14)

A faint mark remained on her neck, her cheeks were flushed red, and a clear bite mark, as if someone had bitten her, was visible on her shoulder.

When I slightly lifted the blanket, there was a bruise on her stomach, and her thigh was red and swollen, as if it had been slapped with a palm.

I pulled the blanket back down and stroked the sleeping Levina's hair.

I lightly poked the slightly wounded bite marks with my finger, then rubbed my eyelids, got up, and first washed myself.

As the falling water wet my head, the somewhat dazed feeling began to dissipate.

"I'm really screwed……."

After getting dressed, I cleared the small plates, liquor bottles, and glasses from the table and roughly placed them by the entrance.

A servant would come in later and clean them up anyway.

She rubbed her eyes and yawned.

"I'm not sure what to say first in a situation like this."

I scratched the back of my head and opened my mouth.

"Want some coffee? With crackers."

Levina didn't answer. She removed the blanket and got up.

She picked up the clothes strewn beside the bed, tossed them into a pile, and then, entering the bathroom, said,

"What are you doing? I thought we were having coffee."

While I brewed coffee and brought out some light crackers and small cheese pieces to place on the table, Levina showered and changed into new clothes.

She sat across from me, took a sip of coffee, and nibbled on crackers, but said nothing else.

I took a sip of coffee and asked.

"Do you remember what happened yesterday?"

Levina bit her lip slightly, then replied.

"You did that to me and you don't remember?"

"Yeah."

After that, I emptied my coffee cup and looked at Levina.

"Or should we just pretend it didn't happen?"

"Pretend it didn't happen?"

"Not that we spent a night together that I don't remember, but how about we just pretend nothing happened at all?"

"I don't want that."

"Then at least tell me what I did."

At that, Levina blushed and flinched slightly.

"......I'd hate that even more."

"Then what should I do? Are you telling me to marry you?"

"......You made me like this and you weren't even thinking of marrying me?"

"Yeah. I wasn't even thinking about it."

"Ever since I was little, I've always thought if I had to spend my life with someone, it could only be you."

"That's creepy."

"I just made a sort of confession, and you're telling me you'll just ignore me after forcefully doing all these, strange things to me last night?"

"It wasn't strange, it was... Ugh, anyway, it's not like you were forcefully subjected to anything by me; you must have made me ingest something again, right? Wasn't it?"

"So? In the end, you were the one who pounced on me."

"I don't remember anyway, so let's just pretend I got drunk and visited a brothel or something.

I'm that kind of person, aren't I, the one you spread rumors about?"

Levina didn't answer that.

She slightly curved her lips upward and lightly tapped the rim of her coffee cup with her finger.

Then she popped a cracker into her mouth, gulped down her coffee, and opened her mouth.

"Still, Lavin, you're excessively kind.

After doing that to me last night, you won't just cast me aside. You won't."

"Do you think so?"

"Yeah."

Levina said with a smile on her face.

"Because I heard you say 'I love you.' Even while hitting me, choking me, and tormenting me, you told me you loved me."

I don't know how to respond.

Levina, approaching me like this, is always unfamiliar.

I got up.

Perhaps because they were clothes from the previous day, they didn't feel fresh when I put them on.

Even though I was looking down at Levina, I somehow felt as if I was below her.

After all, the Levina who stood before me before I was trapped in the closet hadn't changed much from now.

Still, just as Levina said... I can't push her away.

Because I can say that I'm thankful to you for liking me, claiming that anyone who approaches me is fine.

Though the person right in front of me makes me think a bit.

"I'll go."

"Okay, I don't particularly want to do it again, but if you say you want to next time, I'll do it as much as you like.

So even if you hate me a lot, please don't hate me excessively."

As I grabbed the door at the entrance, Levina's voice came from behind me.

"Lavin, let's just be a little closer, just you and me."

****

It was already quite late for classes, so it seemed I should just pass the time and then go for lunch.

So I returned to my room, changed clothes, and wanting to pass the time before lunch, I searched for a quiet, secluded place as much as possible.

Eventually, I leaned back on a bench, took out a cigarette from my pocket, put it in my mouth, and lit it.

A hedge surrounded the solitary bench, so whatever one did inside, nothing would likely be visible from outside.

It seemed like a place where no one would ever come looking, no matter what one did here, so it was surprising that a bench was even placed here.

But that wasn't important right now.

So, fuck. I slept with Levina?

That Levina?

That Levina who hated my existence so much she half-killed me, and not content with that, kicked me out of the family, confined me to an annex, and tried to raise me like a dog?

No matter how drunk I was, this is quite baffling.

The most fucked-up part is that I don't remember what the hell I did yesterday.

Even though Levina's body, which I'd glimpsed, was a mess.

Even as I held the cigarette in my mouth and vigorously inhaled the smoke, my mind was anything but clear.

And perhaps because of the hangover, my head felt like it was splitting.

As I was feeling dizzy and smoking, someone suddenly snatched my cigarette away.

I looked up to see faces I hadn't seen in a very long time.

They must have followed me.

"Young Master, I heard you were kicked out of the family, and that your engagement with Lady Seraphina, whom you boasted so much about, is broken?"

Marcus said.

I let out a hollow laugh, gazed at the three thugs who had somehow surrounded me, then pulled out my cigarette pack again.

"Did you follow me?"

"Of course we followed you. We've been trying so hard to meet you lately, but there's been no opportunity."

Marcus knocked the cigarette pack I had taken out of my hand and continued.

"I can't even imagine how you must feel. You used to swagger around so proudly despite being a bastard, but now you're sitting here so wretchedly. Huh?"

I looked at the cigarette pack fallen on the ground, then stood up, grabbed Marcus's shoulder, and immediately punched him in the solar plexus.

I roughly shoved the fallen Marcus aside, then, even as the two remaining thugs rushed at me with bewildered faces, I unleashed a small burst of steam to obscure their vision.

I kicked one in the face, grabbed the other by the collar, and punched him in the jaw a few times.

Their durability must have been weak; they quickly collapsed.

Back then, even when fighting these idiots, I used to get beaten up all the time.

I approached Marcus, who was lying on the ground dry heaving, kicked his head once more, then stripped off his outer clothes, took the money from his wallet, crumpled it into my pocket, and began to search the other thugs' pockets as well.

Before, it seemed like they didn't have much money, but now they seem to be carrying enough to buy two or three bottles of alcohol.

I don't know if these guys actually grow up over time, or if I just got lucky because they hadn't splurged their money yet.

Anyway, the more money, the better.

As I was happily putting the money into my wallet, a voice came from somewhere, though I hadn't heard any footsteps.

"What on earth are you doing here......"

My eyes met Kyle's.

And his gaze first went to my face, then to my hands, which were picking the thugs' wallets.

"......Lavin Edelgard, why don't you start by explaining what this situation is."

I lifted my head and saw a familiar face.

It was Kyle.

He was carrying a small bag on his back.

"What are you doing here? Why are you here instead of in class?"

"......That's none of your business."

He looked somewhat breathless and hot.

It seemed like he had just come here to rest after training somewhere.

Honestly, I didn't care.

"We agreed to be friendly, didn't we? Can't you just pretend you didn't see anything?"

"So you're telling me to pretend I didn't see you beating up ordinary students and stealing their wallets?"

"Well, I guess that's what it comes down to."

"I don't know where you suddenly got such strength, but you need to fix that rotten mindset of yours first."

Kyle said that, and without drawing his sword from its sheath, he just held it and pointed it at me.

But I didn't feel much.

Perhaps because he was only speaking the truth, or perhaps because I wanted to get beaten up right now, I don't know.

"Ah, yeah. I should have."

I slumped to the ground.

"Really, I should have done something about my mind first."

The thought that I slept with Levina wouldn't leave my mind.

At least if I had been in my right mind, I wouldn't have done such a crazy thing.

My eyes met Kyle's.

If it were him, even if he were drunk and steeped in Levina's drugs, he would surely have remained calm as if nothing had happened.

Kyle looked at me with a slightly bewildered expression, sighed, and then re-sheathed his sword at his waist.

"......First, let's hear what happened.

Make an excuse, like you used to."

It was the first time Kyle had ever spoken to me like this.

He had always looked at me as if I were trash and treated me like disgusting filth.

It wasn't exactly wrong then, and it isn't wrong now.

He had never uttered a single wrong word.

I opened my mouth without realizing it.

"With Levina……"

And then I closed my mouth again, buried my head down, and then lifted it once more.

"No."

"If you have nothing to say, then quickly wake these guys up and take them away. They're your gang, aren't they?"

"......It's been over three years since I hung out with them."

"Anyway, huff, hurry up."

Kyle said that, put down his bag, and, somehow breathing heavily, grabbed one of the fallen thugs by the leg and dragged him away.
