The Viltrumite Across the Worlds
Chapter 301: This Is All My Brother Doing…By the time Clark returned to Kent Tower, he had been beaten within an inch of his life. Blood covered his body, his limbs kept twitching, and fresh blood spilled from his mouth.
"Clark, my baby..."
Jonathan and Martha Kent immediately teared up when they saw how badly Clark had been injured. Martha grabbed his hand and began to cry.
Even Jonathan’s brow furrowed as he turned to Jovian. "Jovian, what happened to Clark? How could ordinary training leave him like this?"
"That’s right, Jovian! Was Clark caught in some kind of catastrophe? Did a supervillain do this to him?" Martha asked through her tears, devastated by the condition of her younger son.
"Hmm..."
Jovian considered how he should explain the situation.
"Mom, Dad, this isn’t Jovian’s fault. It was me. I never asked him to stop!"
Just as Jovian was thinking, Clark suddenly opened his eyes. His injuries were clearly severe, and it took every ounce of strength he had just to force out that single sentence.
"Oh, my poor Clark!"
Martha gently embraced him, her eyes filled with heartache.
"Jovian, don’t worry! I know this was a test. A true hero has to be tempered through countless trials. Our enemies are incredibly powerful, so we need to keep getting stronger! If I don’t give one hundred percent during training, I could end up dying on the battlefield!"
"Just watch me, Jovian! I’ll keep working hard. One day, you’ll acknowledge me and allow me to become a real hero."
As Clark regained consciousness, his Kryptonian healing rapidly improved his condition with every passing second. He had barely been able to speak a moment earlier, but now he could pour his heart out to Jovian without any difficulty.
"Clark, honestly, just hearing you say that makes me proud."
"I look forward to the day when you’re strong enough to stand on your own, put on a cape, soar into the sky, and protect the world. I’ll wait patiently until that day comes."
Jovian gave Clark his approval.
"Thank you, Jovian..."
Satisfied, Clark closed his eyes again. Right now, he needed to rest with everything he had, recover as quickly as possible, and get out of that hospital bed so he could resume training. The sooner he started again, the sooner he could fly through the sky and defend world peace.
"You’re welcome..."
Jovian knew the foolish kid had completely misunderstood him. He had actually been trying to teach Clark when to recognize that something was beyond him and back down.
It did not matter. Since Clark had misunderstood, Jovian would simply try another method.
"You both make me so proud!"
Martha looked at Clark lying in bed and then at Jovian standing beside him, his chest raised and his bearing calm and confident. Emotion washed over her. She felt incredibly fortunate that her two sons got along so well.
"Of course. We make you proud now, and we always will."
Jovian nodded, promising the woman who was his mother in this world that he would always be someone she could take pride in.
"Yes."
Martha nodded.
Jovian then had his staff escort Martha and Jonathan away to rest, while Clark was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Afterward, Jovian returned to his office.
"It seems Clark’s determination is even stronger than I expected..."
"In that case, I’ll find him an opponent he can really have some fun with."
With that thought, Jovian casually snapped his fingers. Space throughout the room suddenly folded over itself as time and space fell into complete disorder.
A moment later, a muscular middle-aged man dressed in white appeared before him.
"I never expected you to summon me."
The man seemingly had not believed he would ever escape that hell. He greedily inhaled the air around him, savoring every second of his newfound freedom.
"I never forgot about you, Thragg."
The man Jovian had summoned was none other than Grand Regent Thragg of the Viltrumite Empire, whom Jovian had thrown into a breeding hell and forced to endure endless rounds of exploitation every day.
"Tell me why you summoned me. You must have a reason. There must be something you want me to do."
Thragg folded his arms across his chest, displaying his powerful physique.
"You’re nothing like that foolish brother of yours. You’re a Viltrumite through and through."
Thragg did not appear to hate Jovian for defeating him or for everything Jovian had subjected him to afterward. On the contrary, Thragg had always admired him.
In Thragg’s eyes, Jovian’s brutal adherence to survival of the fittest perfectly embodied the principles every Viltrumite should follow.
"Heh."
Jovian merely smiled at his words.
"There is something I need you to do."
"This is an entirely new world. Right now, I’m its greatest superhero. But a hero needs evil to make his greatness stand out."
"So, Thragg, do you understand what I mean?"
Jovian’s suggestion was clear.
"I understand. You’re still playing Nolan’s game."
"Fine. If that’s what you want, I’ll become an almost perfect villain."
Thragg nodded, indicating that he fully understood Jovian’s request.
"Take this."
Jovian handed Thragg a yellow glass syringe filled with swirling liquid.
"What is this?"
Thragg examined the object and realized that it was an injector.
"This is a super-serum I developed from the physiology of a race unique to this universe, the Kryptonians. It was specifically created to strengthen our bloodline."
"Once you inject it, you’ll gain the advantages of Kryptonian biology while compensating for the weaknesses in Viltrumite physiology."
Jovian explained the serum’s purpose.
"Understood."
Thragg nodded, raised the syringe, and violently drove it into a vein in his arm.
The needle’s unusual material easily pierced his skin. The instant the liquid entered his body, Thragg felt as though the entire world around him had changed.
"My hearing, reflexes, and vision are growing stronger. My senses are receiving more and more information!"
"And the enhancement is continuing. I see. Is this increase in power coming from the sun overhead?"
"How fascinating. I never expected such a powerful species to exist elsewhere in the universe."
Thragg staggered slightly and took several steps around the office like a drunken man. Then he suddenly returned to normal.
In only a few seconds, he had mastered the Kryptonians’ extraordinarily powerful senses and identified the source of their abilities.
"How do you feel?" Jovian asked.
A faint sizzling sound filled the room.
Thragg did not answer. His eyes suddenly glowed bright red, and beams of heat vision reduced the empty syringe in his hand to a charred ruin.
When the material refused to burn any further, Thragg tightened his rough hand and crushed what remained into powder.
"I feel incredible."
Thragg rolled his neck from side to side, producing a series of sharp cracks. He could feel the unprecedented activity within every cell in his body. Never before had his cells felt so alive.
The sensation was magnificent.
"Then I’ll leave the rest to you, supervillain."
Jovian examined Thragg with satisfaction, as though the Viltrumite were merely a test subject and Jovian was admiring the success of his latest experiment.
"I’ll put on the perfect performance for you, great hero of Viltrum."
After speaking, Thragg became a gust of wind and vanished from Kent Tower at a speed invisible to the naked eye.
"My dear Clark, there’s no need to thank me. I know you’ll be extremely pleased with the opponent I chose for you."
Jovian stood in his office with his hands behind his back, admiring the beautiful view beyond the tower as he quietly spoke to himself.
A thunderous explosion echoed outside.
Not long after leaving Kent Tower, Thragg arrived in another city.
Standing there was a colossal eight-hundred-meter skyscraper. Although it appeared somewhat short compared with Jovian’s thousand-meter sky-piercing tower, it was still an astonishing structure. An immense amount of advanced architectural technology had gone into its construction.
The building was called LexCorp Tower.
Ever since the Kent Group had forcefully established itself in Metropolis, LexCorp had quietly withdrawn from the city and built this skyscraper in a neighboring metropolis.
Its eight-hundred-meter height seemed to proclaim that LexCorp intended to fight the Kent Group until the bitter end.
Inside the enormous building, a bald man standing nearly six foot three gazed down at the city with a complicated expression.
Whenever he looked over the city from this height, rage filled his heart.
This was not his city.
This place was far too unfamiliar to LexCorp. The city that truly belonged to them was Metropolis.
But that damned Jovian, that hateful alien who called himself God Among Men, had taken his territory from him.
"You seem rather anxious."
As Lex simmered in anger, a raspy, commanding voice filled with unmistakable superiority reached his ears.
Lex froze.
"If I were you, I wouldn’t illegally enter someone else’s building, Mr... Alien."
The bald man’s heart jolted when he heard the voice, but he forced himself to remain calm. Adopting a relaxed appearance, he turned toward the uninvited muscular man in white and spoke coldly.
"Wow."
"You recognized me as an alien at first glance. That deserves a round of applause."
Thragg began clapping in appreciation of the bald man’s perception.
"Heh. It wasn’t difficult, Mr. Alien."
"You must understand that in the city next door, there’s a goddamn man dressed in white flying back and forth through the sky every single day."
"Back and forth, over and over again. It’s enough to make me sick."
As Lex spoke, he slipped a hand into his sleeve and retrieved a small button. All he had to do was press it, and his security personnel would immediately know that someone had infiltrated his office.
"Hahahaha!"
"You Earthlings truly love your little tricks."
Thragg rose to his feet. The bald man’s ridiculous performance had entertained him far more than expected, but the game had gone on long enough.
Thragg instantly appeared in front of Lex and closed one hand around his comparatively slender wrist.
"Hey! You damned alien! I knew your kind would eventually come after me!"
The bald man was none other than Lex Luthor, owner of LexCorp Tower.
He glared viciously at Thragg. He had always known that one day, the freak in tights who spent all his time flying through the sky would try to kill him.
After all, Lex was simply too intelligent to be allowed to live.
"Hahahaha!"
"An interesting theory, but unfortunately for you, I didn’t come here to cause trouble."
"Quite the opposite. I came to help you."
"I know you must despise that hypocrite who spends every day pretending to protect world peace. As it happens, his behavior disgusts me as well."
"That’s why I intend to support you in bringing him down. And naturally, I’m not only talking about the man himself. I also mean the company behind him."
Thragg smiled as his eyes glowed red. A flash of heat vision instantly destroyed the alarm hidden inside Lex’s sleeve.
He then tossed Lex into a nearby chair, dragged over another chair for himself, and sat directly across from him.
"You want to help me fight Jovian?"
"Why should I trust you?"
Lex narrowed his eyes. He did not believe that this man, who was clearly the same species as that white-clad bastard constantly flying through the sky, would sincerely offer to help him.
"It’s simple. I despise everything that bastard stands for."
"We Kryptonians were born to rule lesser civilizations like yours."
"Yet that fool gave himself an Earth name, struts around every day pretending to be a god, and naively considers himself some heroic guardian of peace."
"He has even defied the mission of our species!"
"That idiot has disgraced every Kryptonian. Our power was never meant to protect. It was meant to conquer."
"That’s why I need to beat some sense into him and remind him why he was sent to this planet."
There was genuine displeasure in Thragg’s expression.
He truly did despise the naïve ideals held by certain Viltrumites. In his mind, the universe operated according to only one law, survival of the fittest.
Either you killed your enemy, or your enemy killed you.
"I knew you aliens hadn’t come to Earth for anything good."
Lex wore an expression that declared everything had unfolded exactly as he had predicted.
He had long suspected that an alien like Jovian, whose entire body seemed designed for battle, could never have come to Earth for something as idiotic as protecting the weak.
Protecting the weak?
What a fucking stupid idea.
"So you don’t want to cooperate with me, weak Earthling?"
Thragg rose from his seat and floated into the air, looking down at Lex from above.
"Don’t be ridiculous. Of course I’ll cooperate with you."
"At least for now, our objectives align. We both despise one particular goddamn alien."
Lex shook his head.
He was confident that he could control the alien before him. He was equally confident that he could decipher every secret of this alien species, provided he could obtain a sample of its DNA.
Previous attacks, whether missiles or blades, had failed to inflict even the slightest injury upon these damned aliens.
But Lex believed they must possess some means of harming one another.
That was his opportunity.
For now, he would play along and cooperate with the idiotic alien in front of him.
Then, once he had what he needed, Lex Luthor would eliminate every last one of them.
