The Viltrumite Across the Worlds
Chapter 309: Kryptonite? Isn’t That Just Candy? The hail continued all night.
Combined with the sudden drop in temperature, it left the great Dark Knight in miserable condition by the time sunlight finally reached Gotham the following morning.
His head spun.
Yes, unfortunately, he had caught a cold and developed a fever.
"Jovian..."
"I'm going to..."
"Expose you..."
The Dark Knight pulled out the evidence he had prepared in advance. He intended to transmit it directly to every military computer he could reach.
Just as he was about to do so, however, he heard something rushing through the air behind him.
"..."
The Dark Knight frowned. He instinctively ducked and rolled forward, putting some distance between himself and whoever had appeared behind him.
At the same time, he drew the Kryptonite pistol from his utility belt and fired.
Ding!
A bullet glowing with fluorescent green light shot from the weapon in the Dark Knight's hand and flew directly toward the figure descending from the sky.
"Kryptonite? Interesting..."
Jovian casually caught the bullet Batman had fired.
He brought it to his nose and gave it a light sniff. Then, right in front of the Dark Knight, he tossed it into his mouth.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
Jovian chewed the Kryptonite bullet several times before swallowing it.
"..."
The Dark Knight's eyes widened as he watched Jovian devour the Kryptonite bullet. His expression was filled with disbelief.
"What's wrong, my dear Mr. Batman?"
"What do you find so unbelievable?"
"Did you honestly think one worthless little rock would have some tremendous effect on me?"
Jovian smiled as he walked toward the Dark Knight.
"..."
The Dark Knight remained silent.
He admitted that this had been his mistake. He should have collected more accurate information before acting.
Unfortunately, he no longer had time to think.
He needed to escape.
When facing a God Among Men who possessed no apparent weaknesses, fighting was pointless. There was absolutely no possibility of victory.
Escaping alive would be the only victory available to him.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk..."
Jovian ignored the Dark Knight's extreme tension.
He leisurely walked up to the muscular man suffering from a severe cold, took the computer from his hands, and crushed it to pieces with a slight squeeze.
"Don't ever try to threaten me again, Bruce Wayne."
"Next time, I'll shove the Joker's head up your ass."
After delivering his warning, Jovian patted the Dark Knight on the shoulder and swaggered away.
"He knows who I am..."
Bruce Wayne frowned as he watched Jovian leave.
However, he refused to give up. He intended to keep searching for another opportunity to oppose Jovian.
"I'm looking forward to your next attempt."
With his hands clasped behind his back, Jovian rose into the sky.
Although he had threatened Bruce Wayne, he was actually looking forward to their next confrontation.
Before Darkseid invaded, Jovian had plenty of time to play games with Bruce Wayne.
When daylight fully arrived, none of the Dark Knight's threats came true.
Jovian's Kent Group remained untouchable, towering above everyone else.
The entire internet began attacking the Dark Knight. Even the people of Gotham were beginning to lose faith in him.
It was as though Batman had become the enemy of the entire world.
Bruce Wayne was not discouraged.
He had always fought alone, and the world's opinion meant nothing to him.
While Bruce was thinking about how he could defeat Jovian, someone he never expected came looking for him the following night.
Against the black night sky, the silhouette of an enormous bat appeared across the moon.
The whole of Gotham seemed to lie beneath the bat's shadow.
Every criminal who looked up and saw that gigantic symbol in the sky felt terror. Some were so frightened that they could barely breathe.
On the roof of a towering building, beside the Bat-Signal, a middle-aged police commissioner had been bound with countless ropes. Anger and fear filled his face.
Beside him stood a pale lunatic with short green hair, a deranged expression, and an incredibly filthy suit.
The madman gritted his teeth while looking around.
He was waiting.
Waiting for someone to come find him.
"Let him go."
Only when the lunatic heard that painfully familiar, gravelly voice did a faint smile appear on his face.
"Ha... ha... ha... ha..."
The madman covered his face, revealing the tattoo on the back of his hand, and laughed at the dark figure standing atop a nearby water tower.
"I've been waiting a very long time for you, Batman..."
The deranged man stared at the black-clad vigilante behind him.
"..."
Bruce Wayne silently observed him.
The man before him was supposed to be his enemy, the greatest enemy he had ever faced.
Yet now, that greatest enemy had come looking for him because he needed something.
"Batman, I want to destroy you so badly..."
"Just like I destroyed your little sidekick..."
"Hahahahaha!"
"But right now, I have something more important to do..."
The deranged man stared at Batman with unfocused eyes.
"..."
Bruce continued watching him without saying a word.
However, the moment he heard the words "destroyed" and "sidekick," his hands involuntarily clenched into fists.
"You and me, together, we kill that flying bastard..."
The madman continued speaking while constantly waving his hands, drawing imaginary patterns in the air before Bruce.
"..."
After listening to everything the man had to say, Bruce gave no answer.
He simply drove his fist into the lunatic's face.
Thud!
After taking a full punch from the Dark Knight, the madman collapsed to the ground.
Once Bruce confirmed that he was no longer moving, he freed the police commissioner.
"Thank you. And for the record, I'm on your side."
After being rescued, Commissioner Gordon thanked the masked vigilante who had worked alongside him for decades.
"Mm."
Batman merely nodded without saying anything.
He lifted the unconscious Joker onto his shoulder and leaped from the rooftop.
Meanwhile, after Jovian taught the Joker a lesson, the other criminals of Gotham began seizing his territory.
Everyone believed the Joker had lost his influence.
In truth, anyone who offended the God Among Men would inevitably be shunned and driven away.
Everyone living in this world understood one simple truth.
Jovian was the one person who could never be provoked.
The day after the Joker lost his criminal empire, Harley Quinn was captured by her enemies and sent to prison.
The enormous prison held countless metahumans gathered from all over the world.
They had been brought together for one important mission.
To assassinate the God Among Men.
Amanda Waller was a heavyset Black woman and the architect responsible for launching and executing the operation.
At that moment, she was waiting for all her chosen soldiers to be assembled.
In her hands was a detailed file containing everything her organization knew about Jovian.
According to their research, Jovian was nearly indestructible.
Even if humanity used every weapon on Earth, they would still be unable to inflict the slightest injury upon him.
However, that assessment did not include magic.
According to their analysis, magic had a strong chance of injuring the great God Among Men, perhaps even destroying the enormous nightmare that had loomed over their heads for so many years.
The Kent Group had become essential to the operation of the country and much of the world.
Even the current president had only taken office because of the Kent Group's activities behind the scenes.
Nevertheless, the powerful officials who had once cooperated with Jovian had grown tired of living beneath an invincible god.
They despised the feeling that their authority had been granted by divine permission.
Everything they did was monitored by a living god, preventing them from acting as freely as they wished.
Therefore, they needed their god to die.
The Godslayer Project required dependable and powerful operatives.
Sending ordinary people against the invincible God Among Men would only end in disaster.
For that reason, the government had secretly appointed Amanda Waller to assemble an organization strong enough to confront him.
Waller gathered a large number of people with unusual abilities from around the world.
"Enchantress, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, Katana..."
Amanda Waller recited the names as she placed a stack of files to one side.
This was the initial roster for her Godslayer operation.
They would be Team A.
Yes, this was only Team A.
They were not the full extent of Amanda Waller's preparations. She did not believe a single team would be enough to kill a god, so she had organized several different units.
"Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, Peacemaker, Polka-Dot Man, and King Shark will form Team B."
Amanda Waller placed another set of files beside Team A's.
"Now it's time to meet these bad children."
Waller headed toward the cell block.
She walked past every cell, observing each of the operatives she had personally selected.
She then entered the monitoring room and began addressing them.
"Listen to me, you worthless pieces of shit!"
"I have good news for you, and I also have bad news."
"I'll start with the bad news."
"This mission will almost certainly get you killed."
"The good news is that if you perform well, your sentences will be reduced."
Amanda Waller activated the intercom and spoke to the prisoners inside their cells.
"Tell us what you want us to do."
Deadshot stopped pacing around his cell.
He only wanted to know what he needed to do to escape this miserable place.
He needed to get out and see his daughter.
"Good question."
"I want you to kill someone."
Amanda Waller appreciated that he had immediately gotten to the point.
"Who?"
"I'm asking who you expect us to kill."
"You recruited Deadshot, an assassin with a perfect success rate, and then you came looking for me too."
"Who could possibly require both of us?"
Bloodsport frowned.
The moment he noticed Deadshot among this collection of freaks, he understood how serious the situation had to be.
"Very perceptive."
Amanda Waller smiled.
"I want you to kill the God Among Men."
She directly revealed the identity of their target.
"Fuck you."
"You want us to kill Jovian Kent? You certainly know how to pick a target."
Deadshot immediately raised his middle finger at Waller.
"I knew it..."
"If this were even remotely easy, you wouldn't have recruited both Deadshot and me."
Bloodsport seemed to have already anticipated something like this.
"Now tell me whether you're accepting the mission."
"I don't want to hear any excuses."
Amanda Waller waited for their answers.
"No."
Deadshot immediately refused.
As far as he was concerned, attempting to assassinate Jovian Kent was no different from committing suicide.
He could not afford to die.
He had a daughter to take care of.
"Oh, I almost forgot to mention something."
"Anyone who refuses will be sentenced to death."
"So I'll give you an opportunity to choose again."
Only after Deadshot had answered did Amanda Waller reveal that detail.
"You..."
Deadshot was rendered speechless.
He now understood that he had no choice.
"The situation is simple. Either Jovian Kent dies, or you die."
"Someone has to die."
"The choice is yours."
"And if you fail, you'll be immediately disavowed."
"You'll be a deniable unit with no official status, no support, and no rescue coming."
"I've already chosen an appropriate name for your team."
"You'll be called the Suicide Squad."
Amanda Waller had already decided what to call them.
"The Suicide Squad?"
"That sounds appropriate."
Deadshot nodded.
Attempting to assassinate Jovian Kent was fundamentally no different from committing suicide.
Perhaps being killed by Jovian would be more comfortable than most deaths.
It would happen in an instant.
Before their brains could even process what was happening, Jovian would reduce them to bloody paste.
"We need Kryptonite."
"A lot of Kryptonite."
After thinking for a moment, Bloodsport decided to demand a supply of the mysterious stone rumored to be effective against the great god.
"Not a problem."
"I'll do everything in my power to provide whatever equipment you need."
Amanda Waller agreed without hesitation.
"Hey, Deadshot, once you have Kryptonite bullets, what are the odds that you can hit the God Among Men?"
Bloodsport looked toward Deadshot.
"Don't ask me about probabilities."
"Deadshot's accuracy is always one hundred percent."
Deadshot gave Bloodsport a faint smile.
He never missed.
"Excellent."
Bloodsport smiled as well.
As long as they possessed Kryptonite, defeating a god might not be impossible.
While these lunatics began seriously discussing how they would kill the God Among Men, Jovian was peacefully resting, seemingly unconcerned about anyone attacking him.
The lunatics had no idea that their weapons would be completely useless against him.
The Suicide Squad truly was marching toward its own suicide.
