The Assembly Hall, Ironwood Castle

“Your Lordship, everyone has arrived... let us begin,” Kenny reported softly as the last member of the Council took their seat.

The Assembly Hall was significantly more crowded this evening than usual, given the gravity of the matters that needed to be addressed. Additional seats had been arranged at the head table, one for Francesca beside Miller, and another at the far end of the long table for Ivan, who sat observing as an honored guest.

Miller gave a single nod, and a knight struck the bronze assembly bell, its solemn ring echoing through the high-arched chamber to mark the official opening of the Council.

“Let us begin with the first item on tonight’s agenda,” Miller announced in a calm, monotone voice. “As per territory tradition, the Lady of the house may only formally participate in governance once she has been officially appointed to a recognized council position.”

He paused, resting his hands on the wooden table. “Therefore, we shall take a vote on the nomination of Francesca Ironwood as the Vice Head of the Council.”

Miller glanced sideways at Francesca for a brief second. Francesca met his gaze with an equally guarded expression, but neither said a word; the icy, awkward tension between them remained palpably clear to anyone paying close attention.

He must have finalized this agenda item before our argument last night... Francesca thought, her golden eyes scanning the cautious faces of the seated lords and ladies. This is also our last opportunity to force the council authority before Miller reveals his secret connection with Jeckson Libert... once that secret is out, the vassals' trust will shatter, and overturning the dissolution request will become quite easy for them.

“No disrespect intended to Her Ladyship or to you, My Lord,” Lady Frederica spoke up from her seat, adjusting her formal robes. “However... is this really the most appropriate moment to address an administrative appointment given the looming crisis?”

A quiet, heavy silence settled over the room.

Miller inclined his head. “Precisely because of the current uncertainty and growing tension across the Viscounty, I believe having the esteemed Lady of the house formally integrated into the Council will help reassure our people.”

Tapping his fingers against the table, he added, “Please cast your votes and share your thoughts.”

The heated debates and fiery pushback that usually characterized Council assemblies were noticeably absent tonight. Instead, hushed murmurs and whispered discussions rippled quietly through the rows of councilors.

Lady Frederica looked back and forth between Francesca and Miller, noting their stern composure, before signing her official ballot and passing it down the line.

“Given how Her Ladyship has managed the household, reducing unnecessary expenditures, uncovering large-scale financial embezzlement, and serving as an advisor to our local communities… she has earned the deep respect of the populace,” Lady Frederica stated clearly, submitting her vote. “Our voice as councilors should naturally align with theirs.”

Several other council members nodded in solemn agreement, following her lead and filling out their ballots clearly acting out of self interest.

“I will now tally the votes,” Kenny announced, stepping forward to collect the sealed envelopes.

After roughly half an hour of careful review and recording, Kenny straightened up and declared into the quiet hall, “With thirty votes in favor and twelve opposed, the motion passes. Congratulations, Your Ladyship.. the Council officially recognizes you as Vice Head.”

Clap... Clap... Clap...

A slow, deliberate applause echoed from the far end of the long table. It was Ivan, clapping alone with a sharp, mocking smile playing on his lips.

“Congratulations, sister,” Ivan said smoothly, his eyes glinting with amusement.

Francesca offered a subtle, dignified nod, accepting the polite congratulations of the surrounding council members as she dipped her pen in ink and signed the official appointment decree.

Once the document was set aside, Miller’s expression hardened, his eyes locking onto Ivan with grave intensity. “Let us now proceed to the next agenda...” Miller stated, his voice dropping into a deadly serious tone.

“Ah... it’s my turn?” Ivan nodded smoothly, leaning forward. “My Lord and the esteemed Council of Ironwood, I would like to bring forth a troublesome grievance that I believe everyone here is already well aware of.”

He placed a thick stack of official complaint documents onto the center of the wooden table. “It pertains to the unfortunate death of my squire inside your dungeon cell.”

“Regarding that grievance, Lord Ivan,” Miller began, shifting his posture into a formal, authoritative stance. “Our Council and I were about to formally request that you grant Ironwood the opportunity to thoroughly investigate the incident before you decide to escalate the matter to the Imperial Investigators.”

Lord Edward, taking the opportunity to earn some political favor in support of Miller, chimed in, “That is correct, Lord Ivan. It is truly disheartening that you would assume we would allow such a tragedy to occur willingly. If you grant us time to uncover the true perpetrator before involving the Imperial Court...”

“Indeed, there is simply no logical motive for Lord Jeckson to commit such an act in the first place,” Lady Frederica added swiftly, not wanting Lord Edward to claim all the credit for defending the viscounty.

“Ah, but there might be a motive...” Ivan smiled faintly, tapping his slender fingers against the table. He darted a subtle glance toward Francesca, as if silently demanding an answer to his secret ultimatum from last night. “It is a rather tricky situation, you see.”

Francesca clenched her fists tightly under the table, her heart hammering against her ribs. She couldn't bear to imagine Jeckson's execution, nor could she stop worrying about the chaotic aftermath if Miller's risky reveal went forward. She stole a brief, anxious glance at Miller from the corner of her eye.

“If you are referring to the known financial difficulties of the Libert family,” Miller stated firmly, his voice echoing across the hall, “then I have a definitive explanation for why that could never serve as a motive.”

Francesca took a deep, shaky breath beside him. Here it comes... he is really going to reveal it! I need to prepare myself for the political fallout and figure out our next move immediately...

“That won’t be necessary,” Ivan interrupted smoothly, raising a hand to cut him off mid-sentence.

“Lord Ivan, with all due respect—” Miller tried to press on, but Ivan casually stood up, adjusting the coat over his shoulders and brushing back a strand of his silver hair.

“I am dropping the charges entirely,” Ivan announced calmly.

“W-what...?” Miller stammered, caught completely off guard.

A wave of confused hushed whispers rippled across the entire Council hall; the lords and ladies stared at Ivan as if they had misheard his words.

Francesca’s eyes narrowed into a sharp, suspicious glare as her mind raced. What on earth is he up to now...? Why would he abandon his leverage so easily?

“I said, I will be dropping all charges of murder against Lord Jeckson Libert entirely,” Ivan repeated, an unsettling smirk spreading across his face.
