Ruby and I had become completely indifferent spectators.

We practically didn’t need to do anything.

The Hunter Knight mounted on the Giant King Shark took care of everything by himself.

Whenever some underground creature emerged from the darkness and advanced toward us, the enormous golem simply slid forward and brutally and monstrously crushed everything.

We merely remained seated on its back.

It was almost ridiculous.

A mission that should have been extremely dangerous had turned into a relaxing journey through the underground world.

The golem continued advancing, destroying everything that appeared in its path.

I didn’t even need to order every attack.

The golem’s spiritual core had already received my orders beforehand, and that was enough to react to threats.

The weaker creatures were eliminated by the Hunter Knight’s spears.

The larger ones were simply crushed by the enormous mass of the King Shark.

And, whenever one of them managed to cause some damage to its armor...

The elemental energy of Earth around it was absorbed.

The clay rebuilt itself.

It was practically impossible for those creatures to stop us.

However, as we advanced, a discovery began to occupy my thoughts.

The underground world was a place where practically everything that existed on the surface seemed to have been forgotten.

It was a place where different species met.

Where countless lineages had mixed together.

Where strange and deformed creatures had found their own ways to survive.

And there was a rather clear difference between them and the creatures on the surface.

Underground creatures were much more aggressive.

Sometimes, even when they clearly had no chance against us, they still attacked.

There was no hesitation or fear.

They simply advanced.

Some seemed to completely ignore their own safety.

And that made the confrontations quite strange.

The Hunter Knight only needed to throw a spear at the smaller creatures.

Zosh!

A piercing.

A death.

The larger creatures had an even worse fate.

Before they could even destroy the thick clay armor of the King Shark, their own weight and the absurd size of the golem were already enough to crush them against the ground.

Furthermore, the golem could continuously absorb the particles of the Earth element present in the environment.

This allowed its armor to be repaired.

To truly destroy it, an enemy would have to use a devastating spell capable of directly striking the summoning core hidden inside its body.

Or else it would need to possess an absurd amount of energy and strength to repeatedly destroy its defense, without giving it time to regenerate.

None of the small creatures we encountered possessed either of these capabilities.

But this also made me understand why most underground creatures had evolved in that way.

The environment was simply too cruel.

The tunnels were narrow.

The walls were filled with sharp rocks.

The ground had countless irregularities.

Stalactites hung from the ceiling.

And finding enough food was already difficult.

An excessively large creature would have two enormous problems.

First, it would need much more food to survive.

Second, it would have difficulty crossing the tunnels.

Thus, over countless generations, most underground creatures had adapted.

Their bodies were smaller.

Flatter and more compact.

This allowed them to pass through narrow spaces and expend less energy.

It was a perfect adaptation to that environment.

But it also meant that, whenever they encountered a gigantic creature like my golem...

They were completely dominated in physical strength.

The most interesting thing was that the King Shark didn’t need to remain enormous all the time.

Since its body was formed from the magical element of Earth, its size was directly controlled by the summoning core.

When it entered combat...

It assumed its gigantic form.

When it needed to travel...

It could change.

In some extremely narrow tunnels, its body simply began to change.

The enormous mass of clay compressed itself.

The torso disappeared.

And, within a few moments, the gigantic shark assumed the form of a kind of colossal serpent.

It was almost funny.

One moment, we had an enormous predator.

The next, a gigantic creature was slithering through the tunnel.

This made the journey much easier.

And us?

We only needed to sit on its back.

Ruby and I practically did nothing.

— This is really comfortable.

Ruby was sitting in front of me.

— I could get used to this.

— Me too.

We continued advancing.

To fight the boredom of that long journey, I began studying magic.

Ruby also took advantage of the time to rest and occasionally asked questions about some of the things I was studying, obviously just to kill time.

A Blood Fairy like her would never actually be interested in studying.

Meanwhile, the King Shark continued doing all the work.

The creatures that appeared along the way were simply eliminated brutally.

In the end, that turned a mission that was originally supposed to require approximately seventeen hours of travel...

Into just five.

Five hours.

That was all we needed to reach our destination.

The mission location was a huge limestone cavern.

Stalactites of strange shapes hung from the ceiling.

Some were thin as spears.

Others were thick and enormous.

In a lower region of the cavern, crystal-clear and shimmering water continuously flowed down the wall and had formed a small lake.

Naturally, that turned the place into a gathering point for various underground creatures.

Water was a precious resource in that environment.

When we entered the cavern, some creatures that were nearby immediately fled.

It wasn’t difficult to understand why.

The enormous King Shark advanced through the tunnel.

A yellowish light of the Earth element surrounded its body.

Its gigantic silhouette seemed even more threatening in that lighting.

The intelligent creatures simply disappeared into the darkness.

The less intelligent ones...

Attacked.

And died.

I climbed down from the golem.

My steel boots touched the damp and slippery stone path.

I looked around.

My night vision was still active.

Everything was relatively calm.

Strangely calm.

Before I could continue observing...

An extremely gentle female voice came from behind me.

— George...

My body froze.

— As the boyfriend and consort of this great empress...

The voice continued sweetly.

Too sweetly.

— Don’t you think you should help the beautiful and powerful empress get down from the golem?

A shiver ran down my back.

I slowly turned around.

Ruby was sitting on the King Shark.

She was smiling.

A delicate smile.

During a fight, she normally showed her brutal side.

Her eyes became fierce.

Her smile became cruel.

Her entire body seemed to belong to a predator.

I knew I was being teased.

— You’re bored, aren’t you?

Ruby placed a hand over her chest.

— Me? Never.

She blinked.

— This empress merely wishes to be treated like a lady.

Ruby was an extremely dangerous person.

But she was also someone who carried deep wounds.

Sometimes, she seemed like the Ruby I met at the sex market in the Arcangrove Tower, fragile and reluctant.

At other times...

It was as if another personality took control.

An Empress of the Blood Fairy.

Dominant.

Cruel.

Obsessed with blood and power.

I didn’t know exactly how she had endured all the experiments carried out by Lucius in the Arcangrove Tower.

I also didn’t know to what extent those experiments had altered her mind.

But I knew there was a struggle within her.

Two very different parts seemed to coexist within the same body.

One wanted closeness.

Safety.

Affection.

The other wanted power.

Blood.

Domination.

And perhaps that was precisely why her behavior changed so much.

— Do you really want me to go get you?

— Naturally.

— All right.

I began walking toward the King Shark.

Ruby opened her arms theatrically.

— Finally! My consort has understood his duty!

I couldn’t help but laugh.
