“Medon, go,” Lilith said, a big smile on her face. “I’ve got this.”
“But—”
“GO!” Lilith yelled before giving him a small push.
Medon looked at her once more before he turned and ran. He gave her one last look.
Lilith just smiled at him until he turned the corner, disappearing from view. She then reached up and wiped the blood from her face and turned back around to face the demons who loomed over her. “Well?” she asked. “I’m waiting. Don’t you want to finish this?”
“There’s nothing left to finish,” a voice boomed, making her take a small step back. She knew that voice. She’d hoped he wasn’t going to be here too, but it seemed her hopes were once again denied. The demons slowly parted to make way for the towering, muscular creature. Each step made the ground shake slightly and with his mouth open just a little she could see the rows upon rows of deadly teeth within. One bite and he could tear her body to pieces.
“Leviathan,” Lilith said before holding out her right hand. The blood scattered across the ground began to slowly flow up into her palm, gathering into a small orb. “You’re too late, Medon has already gone to face Fenrir. Even if you get past me, the fight will already be over long before you can arrive to help him.”
Leviathan just gave a low, booming chuckle before shaking his head. “Why would I help him? Lord Fenrir has been waiting for this moment for near as long as he waged war. A fight against the Hero from Another World? This is everything he has longed for, everything he has ever desired. If I were to intrude now he would likely tear me apart.”
“You’re as mad as the rest of them,” Lilith said before closing her hand into a fist. The orb of blood compressed into a rapier, which she reached out and grabbed. “Fenrir can’t win this fight.”
“Then he will die happy,” Leviathan said, each step bringing him closer to her. “Are you nearly done? I imagine that blood magic can’t be easy if you’ve only just stolen it. How many have you stolen?”
“Actually, this one is mine,” Lilith said before lunging forward, thrusting the tip of her blade at him. Leviathan lifted a thick arm, the tip of her blade striking against his thick hide. Sparks flew from it as their powers battled for a few moments, before she was forced to leap back, narrowly avoiding a swing of his arm. “I see you truly do live up to your name.”
“I cannot be stopped,” Leviathan said before he ran at her, a massive hand swiping out and attempting to grab her.
Lilith dove to her left, ducking under the arm and dropping the rapier to the ground. She swirled her fingers around, the blade turning to a rope which bound quickly around the shark demon’s right leg. Spikes erupted from it and it then began to rotate rapidly. After a few moments, she was rewarded by a few drops of the demon’s blood joining the rope. Unfortunately, his arm came back around and slammed into her with such force she was sent hurtling through the air before she was brought to a sudden stop by a collision with an unfortunately placed wall.
Lilith laid on the ground, wondering just how much of her body had been broken by that one. She wished Atlas was still here. She felt another pang of guilt before she tried to stand back up and fresh agony shot through her leg. “D-damn it…” she whispered. Her body burned away what she had stolen, but it wasn’t doing it fast enough.
Leviathan kept walking towards her, an unstoppable force of destruction. She had to do SOMETHING. She couldn’t let him join with his master, if he did then Medon wouldn’t stand a chance against both of them.
A massive, gray hand reached down and picked her up off the ground. “Lilith,” Leviathan said. “You’ve lost. I will give you the same offer I was given long ago. Join us, join Fenrir, and you will become stronger than you ever imagined.”
“Fenrir… will destroy… t-this world,” Lilith said softly. “I will not… s-stand by and… and… l-let that happen…”
“If Fenrir destroys this world, then it is a world in need of destroying,” Leviathan said, still looking down on her. “You bear a cursed name, do you not? Is that why you fight? Are you hoping you can redeem yourself if you manage a victory?”
“M-my curse isn’t… a part of this,” Lilith said. Slowly, she reached up a hand and gripped his thumb, for all the good it did her. He had her beaten, they both knew it. She could barely even control the blood anymore and all she had done was cause him a small cut on his leg. Pathetic. By the gods she wished she could kill that stupid Ascended Dragon. Why could she not come here when they needed her most? “I… f-fight for myself. If you’re going to kill me, then you’d… b-best do it quickly. Because—”
“No, I will not kill you,” Leviathan said before he turned to the right. “Your fate is much worse.”
Lilith followed his gaze and felt her heart turn cold. Two statues had been brought forward, one covered in vines, dragged from rubble. A statue of a calm dryad. The second being dragged by lumbering headless knights. A statue of a furious angel.
“N-no!” Lilith yelled before she reached out, trying to draw the blood to her. Her body, broken as it was, refused to obey her.
“I wonder how many names you have devoured,” Leviathan said. “Lilith, the Cursed Thief. Tell me, when you steal the powers of others, do you take their names as well? How many elves have you stolen the names of?”
“L-let me go, you damn mountain!” Lilith screamed as she tried desperately to claw at his hand with her own. Unfortunately, all her hand did was slide off the thick hide.
“Do they disappear with you, or will you—”
His words were cut off by a ferocious howl that sent a chill down her back. It continued for a few long silents before there was silence. Slowly, she grinned. “Your master has died,” Lilith said. “His final howl.”
“That wasn’t a death howl,” Leviathan said. “That was one of victory. Medon is no more… Fenrir rules, now.”
“W-what?! Impossible!” Lilith yelled. “He—” But she never had a chance to object or argue. She could feel the numbness creeping up her leg and through her body. Freezing her in time.
Trapping her.
Binding her name, forever, in stone. Until she was freed. Her name taken from her people.
The last thoughts on her mind before she was turned a pair of questions.
What would happen to Medon and what would happen to her people?
------
Lilith could move again. She stumbled forward and fell to her knees, surprisingly there was almost no pain. Her injuries were gone, apparently one final reward from her stasis. Or perhaps one final gift of her name.
But she had no idea where she was or how long she had been trapped. A day? A month? A year? A millennium? Did her people even exist anymore? Had she been rescued, or--
Someone was standing over her. Slowly, she looked up.
Almost elven in appearance, aside from the solid gold eyes and the beautiful, white wings. The woman smiled down on her with what one might almost mistake for compassion, but it was anything but.
A succubus.
The woman held out a hand, but she knocked it away.
“What… is the meaning of this?” Lilith asked. “Are you another of Fenrir’s fools? How long have you kept me trapped in there?”
“It has been over a hundred years,” the succubus said. “But I am here to help you. I am no demon.”
“You certainly—” The words died in Lilith’s throat when the woman knelt down and her eyes changed to narrow slits. “You’re—”
“A shifter,” the woman said, her voice low. “My disguise won’t fool them for long. Circe is on her way and if we do not leave immediately, we won’t be able to.”
Lilith blinked a few times before, slowly, her eyes lowered. “There’s… no point. Medon has fallen, he failed. I… failed.”
“Medon did fail,” the woman said. “But he yet lives. That’s why the time is right for you to come with me.”
“W-what?” Lilith asked, her head whipping up. “He… he lives?”
“He does,” the woman said before taking her hand and tugging her to her feet. “Hurry. Unless you would rather leave here in chains on a demon’s ship?”
Lilith considered for a moment before nodding, letting the other woman drag her towards the door. She paused only a moment to glance back at the room, empty and stone, with a single raised platform in the center. If Medon was really--
A loud bell suddenly echoed through the stone halls and the woman let out a groan. “I was hoping we had more time,” she muttered.
“W-what?” Lilith asked.
“Hopefully Circe isn’t here yet,” the woman said. “If she is, we’re both dead. Just stick close to me and hopefully we can make it out of this alive. Just follow my orders, pretend you’re a captive and, no matter what you do, pretend you think Medon’s dead.”
Lilith nodded, following behind the woman without objection.
Medon. Alive.
