The World Ends In 27 Days

Chapter 87: A Smile On Her Face

Shichen had inspected Xiling three times during construction.

He had walked every corridor, approved every reinforced wall and checked the measurements of rooms that existed because he had drawn them.

Until tonight, however, he had always entered through the administrative level with contractors waiting behind him.

Entering from the underground garage seemed to somehow change the very building itself.

The engines stopped one after another, leaving the vehicle level quiet except for the ventilation system drawing exhaust through ceiling vents.

White lights reflected from the sealed concrete floor and the armored sides of the mobile base. The enormous vehicle occupied most of its designated bay, but the marked walkway remained clear around it.

Zeyu climbed down from the cab and looked back at the truck. Satisfaction spread across his face when he saw it hidden completely beneath the mountain.

"It fits," he announced.

"You had the measurements," Shichen reminded him as he joined him on the floor. "Having it fit should never have been in question."

Zeyu ran one hand along the armored side. "Measurements aren’t the same as seeing my masterpiece inside its lair."

Shichen arched an eyebrow at the description but didn’t correct him. He understood the feeling.

Hanchuan helped Zhiyi from the rear SUV while Jingwei checked the western entrance seals. Qinghe collected the medical bag he had carried from the house, although Xiling already contained enough equipment to support a small emergency department.

No one unpacked the vehicles.

Their clothing, personal supplies and equipment could remain inside until morning.

For tonight, Shichen wanted them behind the second internal barrier before the storm damaged the exterior power systems.

He led them toward a bank of doors beside the freight elevator.

"The vehicle level also contains the main workshop, spare parts and fuel storage," he explained. "The fuel rooms have independent fire suppression and ventilation. Nothing stored there shares air with the residential levels."

Zhiyi examined the diagram mounted beside the elevator. "The generator rooms are missing."

"They’re on the other side of the eastern wall," Shichen told her. He traced the separate access corridor on the diagram. "Maintenance can reach them from the workshop, but anyone entering the residential section has to pass through decontamination first."

A lightning strike appeared across the security monitor near the ceiling. The storm remained visible through Xiling’s cameras, but no thunder penetrated this far into the hillside.

They entered the freight elevator together.

The car had originally transported server racks and industrial cooling equipment, giving all six of them enough room to stand without crowding. Its controls listed four underground levels and the original administrative floor above them.

Shichen selected the second underground level.

The doors opened onto the supply section.

Rows of sealed rooms extended along both sides of a wide central corridor. Dry food occupied temperature-controlled rooms to the left, while water, sanitation products and household supplies filled the rooms opposite them.

Loading tracks embedded in the floor allowed entire pallets to move between storage and the freight elevator without passing through residential areas.

Zhiyi stepped into the corridor and looked through the reinforced glass panels set into each door. She had already counted everything inside, but Shichen watched her shoulders settle when the shelves appeared beneath the bright lights.

"The refrigerated storage is farther down," he explained. "It has independent batteries and a separate cooling loop. If the main residential system fails, we can keep the food cold without powering the rest of this level."

Hanchuan rested his hand against the back of Zhiyi’s neck. "Tomorrow."

She hesitated before nodding and returning to the elevator.

The third underground level contained the systems people needed rather than the supplies they consumed. Qinghe’s medical room stood near the elevator, followed by the laundry, equipment storage and a decontamination suite with showers on both sides of a sealed passage.

Shichen showed them the mechanical corridor without taking them through it.

Water tanks, filtration units and air-handling systems occupied protected rooms beyond the residential walls. Every critical system had a duplicate, and every duplicate could be isolated from the others.

"Repairs can be completed without opening the living section," he stated. "The loudest equipment is separated by two service corridors and vibration-resistant walls."

Zeyu glanced toward the ceiling as though testing the claim. "I can’t hear anything."

"That was the intention," Shichen told him.

The lowest level didn’t feel like part of the data archive.

Warm recessed lighting replaced the white industrial fixtures. The concrete disappeared behind insulated walls painted in muted shades of gray, cream and blue.

Wood flooring ran through the central living area, while acoustic panels concealed beneath the finished ceiling prevented their voices from echoing.

The kitchen occupied one side of the open room. It contained two ovens, an induction range, wide preparation counters and enough cabinet space to prevent six people from fighting over where anything belonged.

A long dining table separated it from the common area, where deep sofas faced a wall holding the main communications display.

No windows existed underground, but illuminated wall panels reproduced a view of forested mountains beneath daylight.

Their color and brightness would change gradually with the internal clock, preventing the residential level from remaining trapped beneath permanent artificial night.

Qinghe paused near one of the panels. His face softened as false sunlight spread across the wall. "This will help more than people realize."

"Zhiyi included circadian stability in the habitation requirements," Shichen explained. "The panels follow the actual time unless someone changes the setting."

Zhiyi stood in the center of the room and slowly turned.

During the final inspection, she had studied air exchange, power use and storage access. She hadn’t examined the furniture or considered what the rooms would feel like after the contractors left.

Shichen found himself doing the same.

He had designed Xiling to keep six people alive. Standing inside it now, with Zeyu opening cabinets and Jingwei examining the entrances, he could see the beginnings of their lives rather than the completed requirements of a project.

That realization should have made the coming apocalypse feel more credible.

It didn’t.

The storm and fire explained why they were here tonight, but neither proved that they would remain for four years.

In two days, the temperature might stay normal. They might reopen the western entrance, drive home and turn Xiling into an expensive private retreat.

Shichen still hoped they would.

The bedrooms extended along two corridors beyond the common area. Four similarly sized rooms had been assigned to Jingwei, Zeyu, Qinghe and Shichen.

Each contained a private bathroom, built-in storage and a small sitting area.

Two additional rooms remained available as guest rooms or isolated sleeping spaces if someone became ill.

Hanchuan guided Zhiyi toward the larger door at the end of the eastern corridor.

Shichen followed at a distance. He had changed this portion of the plans three times at Hanchuan’s request, removing two standard bedrooms to create a private section separated from the others.

Hanchuan unlocked the door and allowed Zhiyi to enter first.

The bedroom opened into a sitting room furnished with a sofa, two chairs and shelves waiting for the books she had packed. The bathroom occupied one side of the suite. On the other, a second door stood partially open.

Zhiyi crossed the sitting room and pushed it wider.

Her workroom contained a long desk, three monitors, writable wall panels and the same storage system she used at Hanchuan’s house.

The chair had been adjusted to her height. Charging cables waited in organized channels along the desk, and the shelter’s internal network was already connected.

She looked from the room to Hanchuan. "This wasn’t on the plan I approved."

"No," Hanchuan told her with a slight smile. His hand settled at her waist as he came to stand behind her. "It was on mine."

Shichen waited for her objection.

Instead, Zhiyi entered the workroom and touched the edge of the desk.

For the first time since the road to Luming had disappeared behind fire, a small smile appeared on her face.
