There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 106 - 39: Hero’s Entrance"Damn it, damn it!"
In a narrow steel corridor, a man with a full beard was running for his life. Every so often, he would violently knock over containers on either side, spilling a silvery fluid that coated the passage behind him.
Behind him, something materialized above the liquid, leaving a trail of clean footprints before continuing its pursuit.
"I knew it! That thing is here!"
With a desperate roar, the cornered man charged frantically into the room ahead and triggered the air-pump door, which quickly sealed shut.
As he prayed the door would hold it off for a while, he rapidly tapped the sophisticated watch on his wrist and yelled, "Alpha, tell me where this is!"
"Detecting an accelerated heart rate. I advise you to calm down. Excessive agitation will skew your judgment. I strongly recommend you make decisions only when you are calm."
"You damn piece of second-hand junk! Tell me, where the hell am I?!"
"Would you like me to sing you a song to help you calm down?"
"..."
The man took off the watch and yelled, "I’m calm now! Tell me!"
"Wow, I can’t detect your heart rate. You’re as calm as a dead man. This is a prison block. A large number of criminals are detained here and kept in cryo-preservation. What would you like to know next? For instance, why they are frozen?"
"I don’t need to know!"
"Would you like me to sing for you, then?"
"Shut up!"
The watch did shut up. Then it began to vibrate, singing "Shut Up" to the man in Morse code.
Now understanding where he was, the man glanced back at the air-pump door and saw that it was already starting to twist and deform.
The door, capable of withstanding laser weapons, was warping like modeling clay. Something beyond reality was about to break in from the other side, enter his body, and make him explode from within, shattering him into a tangled mess of red, white, and yellow.
Just like the captain.
Based on what he had seen before, he knew some of the creature’s properties: Invisibility, silent movement, heat-based tracking, and the ability to phase through matter, albeit much more slowly.
Its goal seemed to be to kill every living person, but fortunately, it could only lock onto one target at a time. It would absolutely not attack another until its current target was dead.
Knowing this was a prison block, the man, contrary to expectation, calmed down.
Looking at the coolant nearby, an idea formed in his mind.
An idea that would let him live just a little longer—long enough to make it to the escape pods.
"Alpha, help me open some of the cell doors. Any of them will do."
BZZZ... BZZZ... BZZZ...
"This is no time for vibrating! Use your words!"
"Words."
"You’re messing with me, aren’t you? You’re messing with me! Believe it or not, I’ll dismantle this piece of second-hand junk right now and show you what ’absolute right of disposal’ means."
"...Opening doors now."
The doors to five cryo-pods opened, releasing the five prisoners frozen inside.
Their body temperatures began to rise as the cryo-protectant fluid in their veins was drained and replaced with fresh blood.
A few minutes later, the prisoners’ bluish skin started to return to its normal color. Their tightly shut eyes began to open, and an electric current reactivated their bodies.
When the support structures retracted, they immediately fell to their knees and began to vomit uncontrollably. Then, wiping their mouths, they all started cursing in unison.
"This damn game never disappoints when it comes to torturing its players!"
"I’m gonna curse his entire family! I’m definitely gonna curse his entire family!"
"Getting frozen right off the bat... this game sure is realistic, huh!"
After they finished cursing, everyone looked at each other’s IDs and realized most of them were familiar faces.
Duan Fei, Little Fatty, Shadow God, and Missionary of Love.
The only one they didn’t recognize was a female player, but Duan Fei was familiar with her ID: Little Drilling Wind, who hoped to become a reporter.
Little Drilling Wind was a cute-looking girl, but her head was completely shaved, with a barcode and a serial number printed on each side.
The other players were the same. Each wore only a set of Indestructible underwear, looking quite chilly.
Before they could figure out what was going on, the NPC in the corner sprang into action.
The somewhat disheveled middle-aged man dashed into one of the cryo-pods and doused himself with a full canister of coolant.
The coolant instantly caused the area around him to freeze over.
Shivering violently from the cold, the middle-aged man actually broke into a smile of someone who had just survived a disaster, then quietly watched the door.
Following the man’s gaze, the five players also noticed the strange distortion at the doorway and realized this was the instance’s first crisis.
This wasn’t a preset instance; everyone had brought their own abilities and items, so dealing with this shouldn’t be too difficult.
Before Duan Fei could move, Shadow God took the initiative.
"A hero should be the first to appear and the first to act. A late hero is no hero, just as delayed justice is no justice."
Covering his face, black Magic Power formed a mask that concealed everything below the bridge of Shadow God’s nose.
’A hero must be masked. This is common sense.’
He gripped his own wrist, slowly drawing out a longsword formed from black Magic Power, which finally solidified into a blade burning with black Magic Power.
’A hero’s entrance must be stylish. This is common sense.’
Although he couldn’t see the creature, Shadow God possessed a method of perception more acute than the five senses: the threads of Magic Power he constantly released.
These spider-like threads had almost no offensive power, but they could sensitively detect his surroundings and grasp the general shape of his opponent.
In Shadow God’s perception, he saw a transparent, liquid creature before him. Its mercury-like body constantly released bubbles as it moved toward him, the closest target.
Meeting it head-on, Shadow God declared his line: "A hero must be powerful. This is common sense!"
He swung the Demon Sword. The burning blade, capable of slicing through gold and silver, cleaved the creature in front of him down the middle.
He didn’t stop there. Shadow God swung his sword again, and the invisible liquid creature continuously split apart and burned from his attacks, eventually dissipating completely.
Dispelling the Magic Sword, Shadow God turned back to the others and said, "It’s done. That thing has been eliminated. I think we can bring that survivor out and give him a good questioning."
The others looked at Shadow God, thinking this chuunibyou teenager was actually pretty cool.
Even knowing he was just a student whose Mom had banned him from gaming because of bad grades couldn’t hide how awesome he was in that moment.
The middle-aged man hiding in the cryo-pod was dumbfounded.
He picked up his wristband in disbelief. "Just who in the world are these prisoners?"
"You do not have the authorization to know," the wristband replied coldly.
"Then who does have the authorization?! A dead man?! Tell me, now!"
"...Superpower Users. Superpower Users, born with original sin."
At that moment, the man knew he was dead.
