There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 118 - 51: A New RouteAccording to a previous update announcement, *Abyss* had lowered the difficulty of obtaining cards. Special events, characters, and other elements could now be turned into cards, making them easier for players to acquire and use.
Duan Fei had only casually helped Hancock solve a problem, but to his surprise, he received a purple card. ’It seems all the good I’ve done is finally paying off,’ he thought.
This card was invisible to others. Even Shadow God, who was standing beside him, could only see Duan Fei picking up thin air.
Seeing Duan Fei’s action, Shadow God immediately asked, "Did you get a card?"
"Uh-huh. You’ve gotten one before?"
"Yeah, I got a title card once while acting as a hero. The name was..."
"The Men’s Room Murderer?"
"It’s ’Hero of Justice’! And why did you have to specify ’men’s’?"
"Then... the Women’s Room Murderer?"
"It has nothing to do with bathrooms! Anyway, you can use titles directly. Some have passive effects even when they’re not equipped, but the effect is better if you equip them. And you can only change titles in the main hub."
"Okay, got it. Thanks."
Duan Fei first checked the cards he’d gotten before, but found no usable titles.
Resigned, he turned his attention to the Hancock card before him and began to examine its effects.
"Character Name: Hancock
Profession: Navigator.
Combat Power Evaluation: Average Person
Skills:
Void Intuition (Master): Can keenly sense the location of Void Points and promptly identify them. People with this ability are extremely rare, which sometimes makes the Navigator’s status more important than the captain’s, making them a priority for protection.
Spaceship Piloting (Minor Success).
Void Processing (Great Success).
Trip Planning (Master).
Ambition and Aspiration (Great Success · Inactive).
...
Note: Using a Character Card summons a visible clone with Attributes and Skills identical to the original. The clone can be destroyed. Its duration is determined by its power, and the cooldown is 24 hours."
This was a Character Card, a type of card formed when an in-game character’s favorability toward a player reached "Intimate" or higher. Furthermore, they could only be obtained after the recent game update.
Pseudo-men were not considered human, so they didn’t have Character Cards and could only be summoned through other means.
Theoretically, a Character Card could be obtained for any human. However, first, it was difficult for players to figure out an NPC’s specific skills, and second, the events of a single instance were too brief to raise a character’s favorability enough.
Even in a long instance like this one, which could last up to eight days, it was very difficult for a player to raise an NPC’s favorability to Intimate.
Besides, players were here to save the world. Who would want to play a dating sim with some gruff old guy?
If he hadn’t gotten lucky and helped Hancock solve a huge problem, the man’s favorability wouldn’t have increased so quickly.
Finally, a Character Card’s Attributes were fixed. Whatever they were when obtained was what they would always be. They were also untradeable and could only be used by the owner.
Aside from the Summoner’s Professional Skill, [Legendary Record], which could improve a Character Card’s strength, other Professions had almost no way to enhance them, making them seem rather situational.
He tapped the Character Card, and a person identical to Hancock appeared before them. The sight scared the alcohol right out of Hancock’s pores, sobering him up instantly.
"What is that! What are you doing! You pulled out my soul!" Hancock shouted incoherently.
"What, are you playing ’Personality Excretion’ or something?" Duan Fei said, exasperated.
"Then what is he!"
"...A mysterious Qi Gong from the East."
"You think I’d believe that?!"
"Believe it or not, I gave you an explanation."
The summoned "Hancock" was identical to the real one, except his eyes were unfocused, and he just stared blankly into the distance.
Above his head was a white countdown timer, showing that the clone would only exist for another hour.
Hancock himself wasn’t strong in a fight. His strength lay in his ability to sense the existence of Void Points, which allowed him to pilot a ship into the Void.
And according to the Character Card’s Description, the summoned being was a clone of the original and would completely obey the summoner’s commands.
Duan Fei tried controlling it mentally and found that the clone completely obeyed him; he just had to issue mental commands.
As long as it was a Skill listed on the Character Card, the clone could use it.
After confirming the clone’s effects, Duan Fei said to Hancock, "Hancock, you know our journey ahead is extremely dangerous. So if you don’t want to be a part of it, you can back out."
"Are you testing me?"
"No, it’s a friendly warning."
Hancock looked at his other self and instantly understood the reason for the offer. It had to be because of his doppelganger.
After thinking for a moment, he shook his head and said, "No need. I’m already tied to you all. From now on, I have to see this through with you, no matter what."
He paused, gazed into the distance, and then said excitedly, "Those bastards just left me to die, but I’ll never give them what they want! I have to see what they’re hiding on Azure Star! I’m going to give those Federation scumbags a piece of my mind and make them pay for messing with me!"
In that moment, Duan Fei felt the man’s Ambition and Aspiration activate. The dejected middle-aged man was now burning with fighting spirit, determined to show those Federation scumbags what he was made of.
Smiling and nodding, Duan Fei extended a hand. "In that case, welcome back aboard, Navigator Hancock."
"Thank you, Captain Duan Someone."
Moved, Hancock stopped slacking off. He returned to the ship with Duan Fei and the others and began to analyze the journey ahead.
A Navigator’s job wasn’t just to guide the ship into the Void; planning the trip was also one of their duties.
Previously, Hancock had been deliberately slacking, keeping his presence to a minimum to avoid being noticed.
But now, out of gratitude toward Duan Fei and hatred for the Federation, he finally began to use his Master Level Trip Planning ability, starting to analyze and plan the entire journey.
"You’re going to Azure Star. Is there a time limit?"
"Eight days... no, we have to arrive within six days," Shadow God said. "And the sooner the better. I have to get up and memorize my texts."
"Can’t you just copy it to your phone and memorize it here in *Abyss*?" Duan Fei asked, confused. "There’s so much time here. Why not make good use of it?"
"Oh, right. But isn’t that being a bit too much of a try-hard?"
"For others, it’s being a try-hard. For you, it’s the slow bird starting early. I won’t accept any arguments from someone who can’t even memorize seventy-two pages of paper."
Shadow God’s face turned beet-red from the comeback. They sulked in a corner, moping.
Hancock watched the two of them, confused, wondering how their conversation had gotten so sidetracked.
’Or are all Superpower Users this weird?’
Temporarily ignoring the situation, he re-planned the route, calculated their bearings, and ultimately shortened the entire journey by one day.
Time is money. Shortening the trip by a day would significantly reduce the risks and give them more time to gather intelligence on Azure Star.
Following Hancock’s plan, the Long Range began to select new Void Points, flying toward Azure Star.
