There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 139 - 5: Temporary SquadNight fell, and the air began to grow cold. The fearsome Undead Creatures started to stir.
They crawled out of their graves and loitered aimlessly around the cemetery, waiting for Adventurers to arrive and kill them—or be killed by them.
Duan Fei sat on a rock, gazing into the distance. He felt the setup for this event instance was a load of crap.
At first, he thought it was due to his Talent Effect, but after checking repeatedly, he realized it had nothing to do with his Talent. It was just the design of this garbage instance.
’They’re all such carnal creatures, so why couldn’t I have been a male Succubus?’
’What’s the fun in hanging out with a bunch of skeletons?’
The one he had defeated during the day was a massive skeleton. Judging by its frame, it must have been a powerful Warrior in life—and clearly, it had never skipped its milk.
It was also the leader of this cemetery. A few bullets had shattered its weapon and shield, and the rest had struck its body, sending it toppling to the ground.
However, the bullets had only managed to knock it down; they hadn’t done any real damage to its bones, which showed just how tough its body was.
If the giant skeleton hadn’t considered falling over a defeat, Duan Fei felt he never would have been able to snatch the position of leader.
He had hoped the Big Skeleton might know something, but it knew nothing at all.
Death had taken the skeleton’s brain and most of its memories. They didn’t even know why they were guarding this place.
The only thing they knew was that they were waiting for true death.
"According to the Old Skeleton, the only ones who can destroy the Undead Race are holy priests and Adventurers blessed by them. But he hasn’t seen an Adventurer in a very long time, so we think he’s full of it."
"Where is he?"
"Over there, planting flowers."
Following the direction the Big Skeleton pointed, Duan Fei saw a headless skeleton squatting in a field. The top of its skull had been removed, and it was filled with dirt, with a small white flower planted inside.
Hearing someone call for it, the skeleton pressed its head—along with the dirt and the small flower—back onto its neck, then waved and said, "You called?"
"Yes. I wanted to ask, where is the nearest town from here?"
"What for? You planning on raiding the town?"
"Your thinking is too negative. Can’t you be a little more positive?"
"Then... we go bring them war and death, steal everything they need to survive, and then declare that they’ve obtained the democracy and freedom they’ve always longed for?"
Duan Fei sucked in a sharp breath. He felt this old-timer must have been a real prodigy in life—a star player in American-style propaganda, at the very least.
Patting the skeleton’s shoulder, Duan Fei said, "Stick with me, and I guarantee you’ll live the good life."
"No thanks. Just let me die for real. Being a skeleton is too boring! See that garden behind you? I planted all of that."
Seeing the flowerbeds that covered the mountains and fields behind him, Duan Fei truly understood the meaning of boredom.
After some thought, Duan Fei felt it would be good to bring him along.
His mission was to find the source of the contamination, but this place seemed much larger than he had imagined. Finding it wouldn’t be easy.
But if he could get help from these skeletons, his search efficiency would increase dramatically.
So, he nodded and said, "Aren’t you curious why no Adventurers have come for so long?"
"Not really," the Old Skeleton said.
"They can kill us for good. Are you really not curious?"
"Why didn’t you say so sooner? Now I’m curious."
Duan Fei looked at the Old Skeleton, exasperated. He was discovering that skeletons didn’t seem to have the sharpest minds; they couldn’t follow the slightest bit of indirect logic.
’No, wait. They don’t have brains at all!’
Left with no choice, Duan Fei had to break down the logic to a level a first-grader could understand, earnestly explaining to the Old Skeleton and the Big Skeleton why it was necessary for them to go to the town.
"Oh, I get it now." The Old Skeleton had an epiphany. "So, you mean we go to the town, see if there are any Adventurers, and then hire them to come over and finish us off!"
"Uh, well, it sounds a little strange, but yes, that’s basically it."
"You must not have been dead for long, kid! How else could your brain be so fresh!"
"...Hahahaha! Master, he’s complimenting you! Aren’t you going to say thank you?"
Grabbing Yan Yuan by its bird neck, Duan Fei made the little bastard shut up, then said to the Old Skeleton, "So, can you lead the way now?"
"No problem. But first, let’s find some suitable Equipment. I can’t remember much, but I do recall that outsiders are pretty scared of Undead Skeletons. Since we’re going to hire Adventurers, we should probably disguise ourselves as humans."
"Good idea."
Returning to the catacombs, Duan Fei found that torches had been lit. Skeletons were everywhere, playing with pebbles and chatting, or holding up empty mugs and pretending to drink.
All the skeletons from the mass grave he’d seen during the day had crawled out. The sea of white bones made the place look both terrifying and lively.
News of Duan Fei defeating the leader had already spread throughout the catacombs. When the other skeletons saw the trio of skeletons, they all roared with laughter, filling the air with a cheerful atmosphere.
They started teasing them, especially when they saw the Phoenix, Yan Yuan, on Duan Fei’s shoulder.
"Big Skeleton, no wonder you lost! He’s got something you don’t. You think I mean the bird? I mean a brain!"
"Exactly! A skeleton with that much guts—of course you were going to lose."
The crude jokes made the Big Skeleton’s hair stand on end with rage (if he had any hair), his face turn red (if he had any skin), and his teeth grind together (which, at least, he had). But he couldn’t manage a single word in rebuttal.
He wasn’t good with comebacks.
In the end, he could only furiously smash one of the skeletons into pieces, then smash it again after its bony fragments reassembled.
Watching the skeleton quickly reform after being smashed twice, Duan Fei felt it was a bit strange.
’Why can they only reform into skeletons?’
But he still knew too little about this instance, so for now, he pushed the question to the back of his mind, planning to look for an answer when he had the chance.
Besides skeletons, there were also some desiccated corpses in the catacombs.
These bodies were completely dried out and looked horrifying—even the bones looked cute by comparison.
However, according to the Old Skeleton, after a while, the skin on these corpses would gradually fall off, and they would turn into skeletons. Then they’d look much better.
’So why does it always have to be skeletons?’
Unable to wrap his head around it, Duan Fei was led by the Old Skeleton to a hidden chamber.
The chamber must have been an armory, as it was filled with all sorts of weapons and armor.
Unfortunately, due to the ravages of time, most of the weapons and armor were covered in rust and crumbled to dust at the slightest touch.
After picking through the pile of junk for a long time, they finally managed to assemble a gleaming suit of full plate armor, a gray hooded robe, and a tattered Mage Robe.
After distributing the clothes, Duan Fei took a look at their new appearances.
’How bizarre.’
The armor looked expensive, but the hooded robe and the Mage Robe looked cheap. They looked like a hastily thrown-together party, a complete mishmash of styles.
But these were some of the few undamaged items they could find, so they would have to make do for now.
Next up was heading to town to gather information.
