There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 141 - 7: The Once Hero and the Once Demon KingDiscovering its disguise was seen through, the floating eye sprang into action.
Several rays shot out from its eye. Duan Fei and his three skeletons were among its targets, as were the fleeing couple and the child on the roadside.
Drawing his Crowbar, Duan Fei assessed the situation, then decisively rushed toward the child. He shouted to the old skeleton, "Block those rays!"
"But I don’t want to save anyone," the old skeleton cried out. "I’m an evil creature."
"But you’re rebellious!"
"...I don’t like this character trait anymore. It’s not fun at all."
Despite his complaining, the old skeleton still drew his weapon: an oak stick that looked like it had just been snapped off a tree.
Oak is associated with mysticism and Magic in many traditions. As the old skeleton gripped the oak stick, he suddenly resembled a true Mage. He raised his weapon high.
The next second, moonlight rained down from the sky. The quicksilver-like light formed a massive hexagram that enveloped the area.
Trapped by the hexagram, all the rays shooting from the eyeball were stopped, unable to break through.
Sensing something was wrong, the eyeball immediately burrowed into the ground to escape, but the big skeleton was faster.
Despite his heavy armor, his movements were like a Gale as he leaped directly into the hole.
The ground began to tremble. Duan Fei couldn’t see what was happening underground, but he knew a bloody battle was raging below.
A few minutes later, the trembling grew more violent. A fountain of blood erupted from the ground, sending unidentifiable chunks of flesh flying everywhere.
Amidst the gory downpour, the big skeleton climbed out of the hole. It tossed a massive crystalline lens at Duan Fei’s feet.
"Spoils of war. I hope you like it, Chief."
Looking at the big skeleton, Duan Fei felt that this guy must have been an absolute beast in his past life.
Picking up the washbasin-sized lens, Duan Fei recognized it as the one from the giant eyeball.
The item’s effects hadn’t been identified, but he saw his contamination bar slowly rising, indicating that this was one of the pollutants.
Tossing the pollutant into his backpack, Duan Fei planned to find a Divine Hall to get it identified and remove the contamination as soon as he got out.
In the early stages, players could only rely on this method to remove contamination. However, as everyone turned in more and more pollutants, new purification methods would be unlocked, allowing players to cleanse contamination even while inside a dungeon.
But this process had to be quick. The entire event was only seven days long, so the faster they unlocked the early methods, the higher the success rate for completing the event.
Walking to the edge of the hole, Duan Fei found it was already flooded with blood, making it impossible to see what was down there.
But based on the commotion from just now, the space below had to be quite large.
After a moment’s thought, Duan Fei pointed at the hole and asked, "You seemed pretty familiar with that thing. Have you seen it before?"
"I don’t remember." The big skeleton shook its head blankly. "I just sensed something was in there, and I hated it, so I attacked. But I really didn’t know it was an eyeball."
"Think carefully. Tell me everything you remember."
The big skeleton clutched its head. Flames flickered continuously from the deep eye sockets of its helmet as it tried to recall its past, to contemplate everything.
But then, it shook its head again. "Sorry, I can’t remember. I only remember one thing: if there’s a problem, find Winston. But who is Winston?"
"I’m Winston," the old skeleton said, raising its hand. "So can I stop being the boring, rebellious, evil skeleton now?"
"Old-timer, can you please not mess around right now?" Duan Fei said helplessly. "Do you think it’s fun to mess with an amnesiac? Even I, who’s used to all kinds of dark humor, want to punch you."
"No, I really am Winston," the old skeleton said seriously. "As soon as you mentioned the name, I remembered. I am the most evil Necromancer in history, Winston!"
The old skeleton threw its arms in the air and continued to shout, "Furthermore, I am also the most evil Demon King in history, Winston!"
"Then who am I!" the big skeleton immediately shouted.
"You’re the great Hero, Beist!"
"Wow. Just... wow. Alright, I won’t interrupt. You two edgelords can have your little chat. If all else fails, you can find a coffin and be buried together."
Getting up to leave, Duan Fei felt there was nothing more to say.
’What a bunch of edgelords!’
’A Great Hero, a legendary Brave... and I just happened to run into them. An event like this...’
’...doesn’t seem entirely impossible, I guess.’
After all, he knew his own Talent Effect best. It caused one random event after another. So, finding a Great Hero and a Great Demon King right off the bat didn’t seem out of the question.
So, just as he was about to ask for more details, he saw the old skeleton shouting excitedly.
"I’m Winston, you’re Beist!"
"I’m Beist, you’re Winston!"
"That’s right! I’m Winston, you’re Beist!"
The two skeletons’ minds seemed to have fallen into a bizarre loop, causing them to wave their arms and dance around as they faced each other.
’Yeah, this seems pretty unlikely after all.’
Although he didn’t really want to deal with them, Duan Fei dragged the two skeletons along, hurried out of town, and found a random ditch to bury all three skeletons.
Just as he finished, he heard the sound of horse hooves on the ground above.
A troop of cavalry rode past overhead, likely tracking the three skeletons.
In the ditch, Winston gripped his Oak Magic Staff and said in a low voice, "You all wait here. I’m going up to kill a person or two and I’ll be right back."
"You just wait! Don’t you know who I am?!"
Duan Fei quickly equipped the [Savior] title. The aura of righteousness that came with it made Winston frown.
"Why do I get the feeling you have the same disgusting smell as Beist? It feels like I’ve licked shit."
"You say that like you have."
"You... No, I can’t take it anymore! I’m going up to kill a few people!"
"You stand down. I’ll go up and kill them. As a Hero, killing is my duty. I definitely won’t let you have it."
"Really?"
Winston looked at Duan Fei in confusion, his brain once again failing to process.
After finally managing to sort out the logic, he whispered, "A Hero wants to kill people, and I’m a Demon King, so I should do the opposite. No! If you’re going to kill them, I’ll definitely save them!"
"No way. If I get discovered, I’m definitely going to slaughter them."
"I won’t let that happen!"
Moonlight flashed. The nearby cavalrymen clearly saw this bizarre scene, yet they acted as if they had seen nothing at all and simply rode away.
On Duan Fei’s shoulder, Yan Yuan remarked with emotion, "Master, you seem to be especially good at handling idiots like this. Is it a case of like attracts like?"
"That’s why you and I get along so well."
"Master, what a comeback!"
