Before long, three old books were brought over. They contained records of the final battle fifty years ago.

Seeing the books, Duan Fei was a little surprised.

’Aren’t these records a bit too few!’

’The war was only fifty years ago. Some of the people involved are probably still alive. A single interview could fill more than one book, so how can there only be three?’

After hearing Duan Fei voice his doubts, the guild president said helplessly, "These three books are all the information we have. Most of the materials were destroyed by the Church because they were deemed ’impious.’"

"No way, does the Church really have that much power? They even interfere with what the common folk want to read? If you ask me, you have to milk great material like this for decades. Once you’ve squeezed it dry, you make a gender-swapped version and cash in on the otaku demographic all over again. Sorry, I got sidetracked."

"It’s quite all right. It’s rather interesting to see a skeleton so full of life. The Church’s power is so great because of the two heroes from the great war back then. Beist disappeared, and the other hero, Kael, provided long-range support, so he never entered the final battle site. He eventually became the Pope of the Church and ordered all related literature destroyed."

Rubbing his smooth chin, Duan Fei felt that this Kael fellow was a huge problem.

’Destroying literature is a way to cover up history, so what is he trying to hide?’

"Ah, right. Can you guys study this?"

Taking the gem fragments and the crystalline lens from the eyeball out of his backpack, Duan Fei handed them to the guild president. "Something was once gestating inside these gems. I suspect it might be related to this plague."

The guild president nodded. "We had discovered the gems before, but this is the first time we’ve seen a crystalline lens. Thank you for your contribution, Mr. Duan. I truly don’t know how to express our gratitude."

"Just get some results quickly. My standards aren’t high."

The guild president looked at Duan Fei with deep emotion, marveling at how this skeleton was as noble as a Saint.

’If he isn’t the great hero Beist, then who could be?’

But Duan Fei just wanted them to quickly produce some research findings so he could turn them in outside and exchange them for contribution points.

After all, according to the event’s rules, players could turn in contaminants, research findings, and the like to earn contribution points, which could be exchanged for rewards after the event ended.

The rewards included free attribute points and free skill points, tickets to a mysterious shop, large amounts of Abyss Coins, Equipment and Skill blind boxes, and more. The items inside made every player green with envy.

You could say that every event was a day when the stingy developers finally decided to splurge. Not taking full advantage of it would be an insult to the title of ’player.’

While the guild president studied the items, Duan Fei borrowed a few other books and began to read, trying to grasp the world’s structure and lore to better plan his next moves.

Just as he had seen before, the world was similar to the Middle Ages, but with one other thing: divine miracles and Magic.

Divine miracles were in the hands of the Church. Specifically, they manifested as healing powers obtained through prayer, which could easily cure others.

However, these prayers were ineffective against the plague. They even worsened the condition, which ultimately led to the demise of all the Church’s support personnel.

Magic, on the other hand, was considered a gift from Demons. It was a sweet cake on the surface, but an evil conspiracy on the inside.

Casting Magic required Magic Power, and the consequence for an ordinary person who became tainted by it was the mutation of their body, turning them into a Sub-human.

Unlike Pseudo-men, Sub-humans referred to other races that were similar to humans but had distinct differences. There was no reproductive isolation between them and humans, but they also possessed special abilities or defects that humans lacked.

Most Sub-humans had defects. However, a small number of chosen ones not only had no issues after acquiring Magic Power but even underwent benign mutations, becoming even more powerful Sub-humans.

Winston was one of them.

She herself was a Necromancer, wielding Magic that could resurrect the dead as skeletons.

Years of research filled her body with Magic Power, causing her to mutate into the extremely unique Sub-human known as a Vampire.

Unlike the useless vampires common in movies and TV shows, this type of Sub-human was actually incredibly formidable.

They possessed six times the Power of an ordinary person, bodies that could turn into mist or bats, the ability to rapidly recover from fatal wounds through Blood Drain, and formidable Magic Power within them.

Their dislike of garlic was due to an overly sensitive sense of smell, and their aversion to sunlight was because their vision was too good. Silver wasn’t actually a weakness; a steel pitchfork would have a similar effect.

They were long-lived, almost immune to all diseases, could go ten days without food or drink if necessary, and could even enter a state of hibernation in extreme environments to survive disasters.

This creature had almost no weaknesses. Combined with being a Necromancer, she could find any random graveyard and create a skeleton army. She was a woman who single-handedly changed the nation’s customs, forcing the funeral industry to switch from burial to cremation.

’I thought Winston was already ridiculously overpowered, but Beist was somehow even more insane.’

From birth, this man was wreathed in Holy Light. A halo was ever-present above his head, and his footsteps left behind glowing prints. He was hailed as a living Saint.

Because he was born extraordinary, he was identified at birth as the one who could defeat Demon King Winston, and he truly worked tirelessly toward that goal.

At age one, he displayed extraordinary brute force. At three, he could crush a python with his bare hands. At five, he fought and strangled a lion. By seven, he was an unrivaled Warrior in the Kingdom.

At nine, realizing he could no longer improve through training, he left the Roland Kingdom to travel and strengthen himself elsewhere. He returned to Roland at the age of eighteen and began his hunt for Winston.

Although he was very crude and somewhat hot-tempered, he was a rare military talent. He would always lead from the front, mingling freely with his soldiers, and was very popular among them.

Ultimately, he cornered Winston near the catacombs, and the two began their final battle.

Because Beist forbade anyone from getting close, the result of the battle is unknown. All that is known is that the two of them were never seen again, and peace returned to the world.

Compared to Demon King Winston and the hero Beist, the second hero, Kael, was much more low-key.

There weren’t many records left about him. It was only known that he was a man deeply favored by Divine Grace and had been able to skillfully summon various divine miracles since childhood.

After a chance meeting with Beist, he followed him on his journey to eliminate the Demon King. After the final battle, he returned to the Church and became the Pope.

Recalling the behavior of those two skeletons, Duan Fei felt it was really hard to associate them with the hero and the Demon King.

Holding the three books, Duan Fei bid farewell to the guild president, then dragged Yan Yuan—who had already devoured three steaks—and headed home.

’Using these three books as a wedge, I should be able to pry more information out of those two skeletons.’
