There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 151 - 17: He Is Right ThereAlthough he was ranked lower than Lone Ranger, Lone Ranger knew he was no match for Shadow God in a head-on fight.
But he wasn’t going to fight him head-on.
His Profession was Shadow Assassin. An Assassin’s job was to lie in wait and ambush. A frontal assault was a last resort, and a good Assassin rarely found himself in that situation.
Shadow God, erupting with Magic Power, clearly sensed something was wrong. He opened with his ultimate Skill, instantly annihilating a nearby Priest.
The Priest, wreathed in Magic Fire, was still smiling. He kept smiling even as the flames burned him to ash.
Ignoring the strange Priest, Shadow God exhaled, then suddenly lit up the emblem on the back of his hand and entered his second form.
Demon Form.
Demon Form was one of the most important early-game Skills for a Demon Swordsman. By signing a contract with a Demon, they would gain the Demon’s Power and transform themselves into one.
Each use caused the user’s Attributes to drop to one-twentieth of their normal values for a full day.
But now, he had no choice but to use it.
Because a hero never spares any evil.
Having activated Demon Form, Shadow God was enveloped in black Magic Power. He looked like a rider in a black bodysuit, his speed instantly pushed to its limit.
Summoning his twin blades again, he moved like a bolt of black lightning, weaving through the area near the exit. Every tainted Priest or Nun he spotted was cut down with a single strike of his sword.
These Priests and Nuns couldn’t withstand the might of his blade. Not even the Holy Knights’ armor could resist his assault; they fell one after another under the force of his Magic Power.
A minute later, he returned to his original position and sprinted toward Lone Ranger, then practically glued himself to him like a slug.
"I cleared a path. Get us out of here, quick."
"What’s wrong with you?"
"Side effects. My Attributes are in the single digits now. I can barely even stand."
"...Fine."
Supporting Shadow God, Lone Ranger shouted, "Stop picking up items! This is a trap! Follow me, let’s get out of here!"
"Huh?"
The other players looked at Lone Ranger in confusion, wondering why he was saying this.
’This place is full of Equipment, and every piece looks so useful. Why would we leave?’
’This guy isn’t trying to trick us into leaving so he can hoard everything for himself, is he?’
Recalling Lone Ranger’s reputation, the more the players thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. Their gazes turned hostile.
Catching their glares, Lone Ranger knew words were useless now.
Holding his head high, he said coldly, "It’s not safe here. I’m leaving. Any players who haven’t taken the Equipment or items here are still safe for now. You can leave with me if you want."
"Don’t trust him!" a player roared. "He’s Lone Ranger! He wants to trick us into going outside and then kill us!"
"Why would I need to trick you into leaving just to kill you?" Lone Ranger sneered.
"Well..."
The player was instantly speechless.
Seeing the Priests and Nuns begin to surround them, Lone Ranger sighed, knowing these walking loot piñatas were beyond saving.
He had no other choice. He grabbed Shadow God and charged, breaking through the encirclement before the NPCs could fully close in and making a clean escape.
Before he left, he glanced one last time at the other players. He didn’t bother arguing, just let out a cold laugh and disappeared.
Soon after, Jinghong also rushed out and escaped, followed by Darts Guest and Bald Qiang.
The remaining players looked at each other, then shrugged. Almost none of them took the warning seriously.
A few players, however, sensed that something wasn’t right.
Seizing the opportunity when the Holy Knights chased after Lone Ranger’s group, a few players, after much hesitation, finally ran out through a gap in the camp.
However, they didn’t go far. Instead, they hid near the camp, carefully observing it to gather information.
Having escaped with his life, Lone Ranger didn’t stop to rest. He kept running through the forest, evading the pursuers on his tail.
Hiding in a bush, he watched the heavily armored Holy Knights retreat into the distance. Just as he was about to pick another escape route, he heard footsteps behind him.
He instantly flung a Flying Knife at the sound. Imbued with Shadow Power, the blade shot forward like a meteor.
But three sharp whooshes answered from the opposite direction, and his Flying Knife was intercepted mid-flight by darts. Such skill was not to be underestimated.
Halting his attack, Lone Ranger asked, "Darts Guest?"
"It’s me. Don’t be rash. Jinghong and Bald Qiang are here too."
Only then did Lone Ranger breathe a sigh of relief, but he still watched the others warily until he confirmed it was Darts Guest before relaxing.
The earlier escape had left everyone somewhat exhausted.
Taking food and water from their bags, the group rested for a moment in the shadows. They then exchanged information and discovered that everyone had been attacked.
Their attackers were all different, but the method was the same.
If you didn’t take any Equipment or particularly important items, a Priest, Nun, or Holy Knight would appear and bring you whatever you wanted most.
If you still refused, you would be attacked.
"What do you think happens if you accept?" Darts Guest asked.
"I don’t know, but you’d be corrupted at the very least," Lone Ranger said.
Darts Guest stared at Lone Ranger, then suddenly smiled. "You’re actually not so bad, you know? You knew to escape with Shadow God. Alright, I’ll forgive you for killing me before."
Lone Ranger looked at him. "Are you always this quick to forgive people?"
"Yeah. How’d you know?"
"No reason. I just have a feeling you’re going to get screwed over badly in the future. What’s our next move?"
The men looked at each other, none of them having a clue.
They’d entered the instance only to find a bunch of NPCs trying to trap them. Their only clue was the Holy Scripture, and that was it.
This area was also riddled with plague. Without the protection of the Clergy, they would probably die from the pestilence as soon as they entered a city.
In a way, this instance was already over for them, because it would be nearly impossible to get any more useful information.
Unlike the others, however, Jinghong seemed exceptionally calm.
She silently finished her food and water, steadied her breathing, then looked at a map and said, "Let’s go. We’re going to find Duan Someone."
"Duan Someone is here too?" the others asked excitedly, then realized everyone else in the group had run an instance with Duan Fei before.
After a moment of silence, Darts Guest asked, "Jinghong, how do you know Duan Someone is here?"
"A feeling."
"A feeling isn’t evidence!"
"Then it’s my intuition."
"Isn’t that the same thing?!"
"Follow me. I feel like my Duan Someone is over there."
"...Jinghong, is there really an inverse relationship between a person’s looks and their intelligence?"
"Trust me, I’m not wrong. If you don’t believe me, you can just wait for those madmen to chop off your heads and string them up like candied haws."
"...Forget it. Let’s just follow Jinghong."
And so, the five of them, led by Jinghong, started on the road south.
