There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!

Chapter 165 - 31: Contempt for the Demon God

Kael’s fifty years of infiltration were terrifyingly effective.

He carefully selected his targets, one by one, slowly having them infested with Heart-devouring Worms. Any failures were simply discarded. The final result was control over the King and most of the officials.

By manipulating these pawns, the Demon God had effectively seized control of Roland’s entire army, and he immediately dispatched the clueless soldiers to fight the Undead Skeletons.

The hastily assembled troops had little morale or combat effectiveness, but the Demon God merely needed vessels to bear his power.

He summoned the eyeballs from statues all across the continent. These eyes were a variant of the Heart-devouring Worm, each one a terminal used to absorb faith and convert it into power the Demon God could now call upon.

For the Demon God, who was unable to commit his true form to this place, this power was both precious and timely.

Savoring this stolen power, the Demon God bestowed it upon the soldiers on the front lines.

One by one, the eyeballs exploded above the soldiers. With each detonation, a Divine Art descended, granting the soldiers its power.

Under the Demon God’s power, the confusion in the soldiers’ hearts slowly faded, replaced by a brutal, bloodthirsty impulse.

Their eyes grew bloodshot, and their cheeks began to fester, splitting open into wounds that would never heal.

This was the mark of the Demon God’s blessing. Fear would drain away from these two wounds, leaving nothing but brutality and slaughter.

Through the remaining eyeballs, the Demon God’s vision soared through the air like a bird, gazing down upon the world below.

Looking down, he saw black skeletons rising up, clashing with the frenzied soldiers.

The black tide crashed against mortal flesh. Beast-like roars echoed—a beautiful symphony that the Demon God couldn’t help but lose himself in.

’As a Demon God who intends to destroy everything, what sound could be more beautiful than this?’

There were no Descenders among them, as Descenders themselves were not suited for this kind of massed formation.

’They are better suited for special missions. If "Kael" isn’t mistaken, someone should be on their way to assassinate me right now.’

Sensing an unfamiliar gaze, Beist, who was commanding on the ground, looked up. He then grabbed a long spear and hurled it forcefully into the air.

The invisible eyes were pierced one after another, the hurled spear impaling several of them in a row.

Afterward, his thrown spear flew like an arrow from a bow, and the omnipresent eyes were quickly cleared out, making "Kael" sigh.

’Beist. As expected, you’re still the same as ever.’

Sitting quietly on the palace throne, "Kael" sipped red wine and nibbled on a slice of cheese. He suddenly glanced toward a corner of the hall and said, "That’s not very polite for a guest, is it?"

The shadows began to waver, and Lone Ranger’s figure emerged, coming to a stop opposite "Kael."

Looking at Lone Ranger with amusement, "Kael" said, "A hero? It’s always the same story. Whenever we’re about to do something, a ’hero’ always appears. But... aren’t you a bit too weak for the part?"

Lone Ranger stared at the "Kael" before him, his expression grim beneath his hood.

As a Shadow Assassin, using Shadow Teleportation to reach his destination was a simple matter.

But he hadn’t expected his opponent to be so formidable.

The Demon God’s physical form was still Kael’s, but infused with Divine Power, Kael’s body had now surpassed the peak of human potential.

Furthermore, the infusion of Divine Power granted him resistance to weapons. Unless one wielded Extraordinary Power, it was impossible to contend with a being of the Saint Level.

After confirming his opponent’s strength, Lone Ranger vanished into the shadows. When he reappeared, he had brought three companions with him.

The moment Jinghong appeared, she adopted a combat stance, facing "Kael" directly.

Shadow God drew the black Demon Sword from his wrist guard, taking his place before "Kael" as well.

The third, of course, was Duan Fei.

Darts Guest and Bald Qiang were support-focused; against a final boss like this, they would not only be of no help but would actively be a burden, so they weren’t brought along.

Looking at the three before him, a smile finally spread across "Kael’s" face.

"Interesting. You three Descenders are quite strong, on par with Gale back in his day. But what are you doing here, little skeleton?"

Having been singled out, Duan Fei looked at "Kael," sneered, and said, "Pathetic."

"Uh, do you realize I’m a Demon God?"

"A pathetic Demon God."

"I believe you should show me a little more respect."

"An old pervert who can only get his kicks by possessing little boys."

"...Just die."

Black lightning shot from his fingertip, striking toward Duan Fei.

Duan Fei simply took out a mirror, took a few steps while examining the top of his head in the reflection, and the lightning bolt inexplicably struck a nearby pillar, leaving the Demon God bewildered.

After staring intently at Duan Fei for a long moment, he unleashed several more bolts of lightning, but Duan Fei dodged them all with ease, merely by looking at his reflection in the mirror.

Spreading his hands, Duan Fei said with a helpless sigh, "My, you’re so chivalrous, letting me dodge so many of your attacks. But could you please get serious? I’m starting to get bored."

The smile on "Kael’s" face slowly vanished, and his gaze on Duan Fei grew heavy.

"Who in the world are you? How can you dodge my attacks? Do you possess the Sacred Artifact of some god? Are you one of their chosen?"

"’Friends’ is a better word for it. I’ll give you thirty seconds. If you can land a single hit on me, we’ll call it your win. How about it?"

"Fine."

"Kael" rose with a savage grin as torrents of lightning erupted from his fingertips, surging throughout the room.

Duan Fei, in turn, gripped his crowbar. [Spiritual Armor] activated, causing his Attributes to skyrocket.

In the next instant, the lightning became like a living thing, a ceaseless, roaring river of energy galloping around Duan Fei. The black lightning carried a destructive might; the slightest touch meant annihilation.

Despite the perilous situation, Duan Fei was still looking in his mirror, occasionally casting a glance at "Kael."

With the help of his Talent, Duan Fei didn’t need to pay any attention to the surrounding lightning. He just had to keep finding the spots with no danger and wait.

But from "Kael’s" perspective, Duan Fei was calmly dodging his attacks while primping in a mirror. This display of contempt filled him with unparalleled rage.

In his extreme fury, the Demon God recklessly summoned more lightning. The Power of Faith he had accumulated for so long burst forth in this one moment, surging madly toward Duan Fei.

Just as all of the Demon God’s Divine Power surged out, Duan Fei saw the exact word he had been waiting for appear above his opponent’s head.

"Danger."

Knowing the time was right, Duan Fei shouted decisively, "Now!"

Jinghong, who had been locked onto the Demon God from the side, was the first to move. Her attack was heavy and powerful; her slender arms struck with the force of a long spear, smashing directly into "Kael’s" shoulder.

Without the protection of his Divine Power, "Kael’s" shoulder broke with two loud CRACKS.

Shadow God’s blade followed immediately. Black Magic Power flashed across his neck, sending his head flying into the air.

Deprived of its body, "Kael’s" head frantically tried to escape, but Lone Ranger had been waiting. A Sleeve Sword infused with Shadow Energy shot out, nailing the head to the wall.

While the Demon God still had a breath left in him, Duan Fei walked up and looked down on the disembodied head.

"See? I told you. You’re just a pathetic Demon God."

As he watched his enemy slowly expire, consumed by fury and indignation, Duan Fei heard the words he had been dreaming of.

"Contempt for the Demon God: Complete."
