There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 180 - 46: The Real RewardAfter watching the ending and the final message, Duan Fei asked, "If there’s a perfect ending, does that mean this instance has a normal one, too?"
Hearing Duan Fei’s question, the scene on the screen began to change, revealing a completely different ending.
In this ending, Duan Fei and Jinghong never appeared, and Uncle Peng was completely victorious.
Sun Jianguo, lost in a hallucination, picked up a hammer and bludgeoned Xiao Wang, Uncle Zhao, and Granny Liu to death. Then, with a wailing Sun Yu in tow, he ran out of the snowy mountains on foot a few days later.
With no one to care for her, Sun Yu’s mother eventually starved to death. Before she died, she seemed to regain some consciousness and scraped a line of bloody words onto the wall: "I’m sorry."
A few days later, rescue personnel who entered the snowy mountains discovered the gruesome corpses of Xiao Wang, Uncle Zhao, and Granny Liu, as well as the starved body of Sun Yu’s mother.
But Uncle Peng’s whereabouts were unknown.
Afterward, Sun Jianguo was deemed to have suffered a psychotic break and was committed to a mental hospital.
His son was sent to an orphanage, drifting from place to place before disappearing without a trace.
After watching it, Duan Fei sighed with a mix of emotions, thankful he hadn’t triggered this ending.
Otherwise, he would have been sick to his stomach.
’But Divination Master, where’s that Summoning Skill you promised?’
’And I didn’t see my Talent manifest this time either. It must be well hidden.’
Next, it was time to check his rewards.
"Main Quest: Help Sun Yu as much as possible. Perfect Completion.
You did not gain a Level from this relaxing instance exploration.
The newly consumed Pseudo-human Extract is taking effect. Your Reaction has increased to 11.
Instance Evaluation: Outstanding Contribution. Abyss Coin reward doubled. You have received 1,000 Abyss Coins.
Through your instance exploration, you have obtained seven Earth Puppets, one copy of the ’Eighteen Child Transport Method,’ and one Green Leaf Dagger. It is rumored that a certain administrator is collecting these items. Perhaps you could exchange them for something else."
After reading the last sentence, Duan Fei discovered the Earth Puppets had already returned to his inventory.
’So this is the real reward.’
Once he understood, Duan Fei said to Jinghong, "Jinghong, come with me to the admin team. It’ll be an eye-opener."
"No thanks, I have to go back and pack my things."
"You’re moving?" Duan Fei asked, confused.
Jinghong looked at Duan Fei helplessly. "I knew it. You didn’t hear a word I said earlier. Never mind, you’ll find out later. I’m logging off."
Watching Jinghong leave, Duan Fei wracked his brain but couldn’t remember what she was talking about.
Shrugging, he left the room with his spoils and returned to the city.
One second he was in a world of ice and snow, the next he was back in the city. The teleportation was a bit jarring, but it was nothing once you got used to it.
He had activated the accelerated game time mode, so it was now 6:00 PM.
He logged off to eat dinner first, then returned to the city. After asking other players for directions to the admin team’s location, he was surprised to discover their headquarters was right in the Divine Hall.
Even though it was dinnertime, the place was still bustling.
After all, event instances were one of the few opportunities to milk the *Abyss* system for all it was worth. If you didn’t seize the chance, you weren’t living up to your title as a player.
And since players had to come to the Divine Hall to exchange points after every event instance, the administrators were all worked to the bone.
The only one at leisure was a self-proclaimed administrator: the Divination Master.
She was leisurely brewing a pot of herbal tea. Across from her sat a young man who clearly wanted to leave but couldn’t, constantly forcing a pained smile as he humored her.
Noticing the young man’s smile growing stiff, the Divination Master slammed the table and snapped, "Is talking to me such a hardship for you?!"
"That’s not what I meant. It’s just that everyone’s so busy, and I just became a full-time administrator. It’s not right for me to be slacking off," the young man said with a wry smile.
"Is chatting with me slacking off? This is ’caring for your elders’! This is ’community outreach’! This is ’bringing warmth to the people’! Don’t you dare call it slacking off. Besides, a cutie like me is free to look at, I don’t charge."
The young man desperately tried to think of an excuse to get away from the Divination Master when he happened to spot Duan Fei walking in.
Sensing the Earth Puppets in the other’s inventory, he was overcome with a wave of excitement and gratitude, and he couldn’t help but stand up.
However, as an administrator, emotional control was a required course. He reined in his feelings in a split second and asked politely, "Excuse me, player, how may I help you?"
Duan Fei looked at the young man. He seemed a little familiar.
He was wearing a black butler’s uniform over a white shirt, his hair was as fluffy as seaweed, and his smile had the cheerful, energetic vibe of a golden retriever.
"Have we met somewhere before?" Duan Fei asked.
"Trying to get chummy with an admin won’t score you any extra rewards," the young man said with a smile.
"Is that so? Never mind then. How should I address you?"
"Administrator Yu Bo," the other replied with a smile.
Yu Bo is the god of rain, and Wind Granny is his counterpart.
’The members of the admin team seem to love giving themselves strange names,’ Duan Fei thought. ’And the different names seem to represent different abilities. I wonder what the rules are.’
After pondering for a moment, Duan Fei realized he was still in the middle of a conversation and said sheepishly, "Sorry, I zoned out."
"It’s fine. So, what can I help you with?"
"Right. I obtained some special items and was told to come to the admin team to exchange them. So, I was wondering how I go about that?"
Seeing the Earth Puppets, the book, and the dagger that Duan Fei laid out, even a full-time administrator like Yu Bo’s eyes dimmed for a second.
But he quickly collected the items and said to Duan Fei, "You’re in luck. I happen to know the person you’re looking for. I’ll be responsible for delivering these."
Pretending to open an interface and send the items, Yu Bo then said, "The reward has been sent. You have two choices. The first is to receive 3 Universal Skill Points directly."
"Universal Skill Points..."
Universal Skill Points were different from regular Skill Points; you could think of them as a more advanced version.
These Skill Points were hard to come by, as they could be used to learn Skills from any Profession.
You still had to unlock any prerequisite Skills first, but even so, they were extremely valuable.
Duan Fei’s heart skipped a beat when he heard that, but he still asked, "And what’s the second option?"
"A special Summoner Skill, [Substitute]. With this Skill, you can have two Summoned Creatures active at the same time, but one of them must be housed within an item. That creature will only retain some of its abilities, but it will also gain different traits based on the item it inhabits. It’s worth noting that if the host item does not have the [Indestructible] tag, the item will be destroyed when the inhabitation ends."
Hearing this, Duan Fei knew exactly which one to choose.
