There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!

Chapter 192 - 58: A Fast Way to Make Money

"Me, Yan Yuan, Lone Ranger, Hyena, and Anna. With five people on the team now, we should be able to go check things out up top."

With five members assembled, Duan Fei felt it was time.

Lone Ranger had killed an Assassin, but Anna said it wasn’t a problem. The guy wasn’t popular, and besides, they could snag some of his Equipment.

The poor bastard’s Equipment couldn’t be taken out of the zone. After Lone Ranger checked it, he found the stats were useless to him, so he let Anna and Hyena have it.

Anna whistled after estimating the value of the Equipment. She remarked that it was important to stick with the right people; they had made a tidy profit so quickly.

They first sent Lone Ranger to the old man’s shop to get a personal terminal installed. Then, the group sat down nearby, discussing their next move while eating some very industrial-tasting food paste.

Although Hyena was the team’s captain and organizer, he knew he wasn’t strong enough for the role. He naturally handed the leadership position to Duan Fei, content to just be the one running errands.

Duan Fei took out a pen and paper, wrote down everyone’s name, and then listed their specialties.

Duan Fei’s strengths were puzzles and analysis.

Yan Yuan was a walking health pack, but since most people here were part machine, the effects of his blood would probably be diminished.

Lone Ranger’s specialty was, of course, assassination. He had already forged the Lamium Ore they’d acquired into weapons: two Sleeve Swords and a set of Flying Knives.

These weapons could channel his Shadow Energy, further enhancing his power. He had even climbed a few spots in the recent rankings, successfully breaking into the top ten.

Anna was decent in close combat, and her numerous artificial muscles allowed her to carry heavy loads, a crucial ability for certain situations.

As for Hyena, he was skilled with mechanical repairs and modifications, so he could handle some of the team’s logistical work.

After listing everyone’s specialties, Duan Fei said, "Our goal is to first make a pile of money, then use that to snowball our strength. Eventually, we’ll build up our forces, find the source of the contamination, and if necessary, a hydrogen bomb to save the world is also an option."

"Wait, aren’t we robbing the Memory Bank?" Hyena asked in disbelief.

"We have five people now. Robbing a bank is so small-time. Let’s put that on the back burner and focus on saving the world with a hydrogen bomb first. The bank robbery will naturally fall into place when the time comes."

"But... wait, how does a hydrogen bomb save the world?"

"It works when there’s nuclear contamination. One hydrogen bomb solves everything. Even Gandhi would have to approve."

Hyena silently edged away, feeling that this Duan Fei guy was a real psycho.

After placating Hyena, Duan Fei said, "Alright, meeting time. Everyone can speak their mind. Now that we’re a team, we need to figure out the fastest way to make money."

Here, "money" naturally referred to Morality.

The Morality Standard was the universal principle here, the very foundation of this society.

Everything required for living here had to be purchased with Morality. The word had lost its original meaning, becoming just another name for currency.

Everyone chased Morality, yet no one had any morals.

Anna, who was familiar with this place, thought for a moment before speaking up first. "Let’s go rob someone."

"Who should we rob?"

"A bank."

"You’re on the same level as your boyfriend. Next."

"How about we take out a few fat cats?" Lone Ranger suggested. "Seems like nobody around here cares much about dead bodies."

"A few isolated cases are fine, but too many will attract the attention of the enforcers."

"What about theft?"

"All the Morality is stored in personal terminals. We don’t have a hacker, so we can’t steal it."

...

Listening to his teammates’ suggestions, Duan Fei wrote them down on the paper, one by one.

Letting the others start their own discussion, Duan Fei looked at what he’d written down. ’Everyone on this temporary team is a criminal,’ he mused.

’Including myself, not a single one of them had considered earning Morality through normal means. Things like extortion and blackmail were child’s play.’

’Looking over the list, the most reliable option was actually being a mercenary. But the longest jobs only lasted eight days. Mercenary work paid too little and was too slow; it really wasn’t a good fit.’

’So, do I really have to get everyone on board with robbing the bank?’

The moment that thought occurred to him, Duan Fei noticed the paper in front of him change.

On the page, numbers began to appear after each of the suggestions.

These numbers were all percentage ranges. For example, the range for robbing the bank was "5%–12%," and the other numbers followed the same format.

The lowest numbers were for robbing the bank, while the highest was for acting as mercenaries, with a range between "50%–100%."

After watching for a moment, Duan Fei had a good idea of what was happening. ’This must be the effect of my Talent.’

While the others were still discussing, Duan Fei picked up his pen and added a few more ideas to the list. A different percentage range appeared next to each one.

If a task was too difficult, the percentage range would become very small, approaching zero.

If it was very simple, the numbers in the range would be very large, approaching one hundred percent.

With the test complete, Duan Fei said to himself, ’My Talent Effect is... I can see the success rate for different people performing different tasks.’

His Talent’s effect flared, confirming his guess was correct.

Duan Fei nodded. ’This effect is really perfect for a team leader.’

’With this Talent, I can see the success rate of many tasks in advance. I can even see how the success rate changes for different people on different tasks. It’s an incredibly practical effect.’

He tried adding modifiers to the front of different tasks and found that different modifiers changed the success rate.

’That wasn’t hard to understand. For example, robbing a bank is a highly random event, but there must be a time when the bank’s security is lax enough that the success rate would naturally increase dramatically.’

’But with a Talent Effect like this, who would bother with illegal activities?’

’Isn’t making money legally so much better?’

After thinking for another moment, Duan Fei listed some gray-area industries that could make money quickly, then checked the numbers for each scenario.

Half an hour later, he finally stood up and asked his teammates, "How’s the discussion going?"

"We’re having beef noodles for dinner," Yan Yuan said seriously.

"...You’d better have an explanation for me."

"We don’t know either. The topic just inexplicably jumped to that," Lone Ranger said with a helpless shrug. "By the way, I think donuts would be better."

"Go to hell, you sweet-tooth. We’re going to Wing City. I already know what we’re going to do."

"What are we gonna do?" Hyena asked curiously.

"We’re going to gamble. And we’re going to clean them out," Duan Fei said with a confident smile.
