There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!

Chapter 201 - 67: Failed, But Not Completely

Restoring memories wasn’t a major operation. It could even be done right in the bar.

The bartender here was a burly man. He was so obsessed with body modification that he’d even replaced his brain with a titanium alloy one, making him look like a skin-covered Terminator.

When he learned the group wanted to restore their memories, he quoted a high price. After getting paid, he kicked out the other customers and hauled out the equipment.

It was a device that looked like a dentist’s chair. Many parts of it were already rusted, and the headrest used to secure the user was still stained with dark red blood.

As Hyena lay down on the machine, the Bartender said gruffly, "Raise your hand if it hurts."

"Will you do anything to make it less painful?" Hyena asked nervously.

"I’ll do what I can."

"Wait, I’ve suddenly changed my mind. I think we should..."

"Too late."

He flipped the switch. Memories from the instance related to Hyena began to flood in, making Hyena shriek in agony.

There were many ways to restore memories. Using one’s previous personal terminal was the most basic method.

However, Hyena’s previous personal terminal was lost, so he had to resort to the second method.

The Personality Recreation Method.

The Memory Bank stored years of surveillance footage from all over Wing City. These recordings documented every citizen’s actions, and through a vast algorithm, it calculated each person’s disposition to simulate their personality.

The simulated personality had a 99% similarity rate. Once it was imprinted, it became very easy to recover the lost memories, as the brain’s powerful ability to fill in the blanks would gradually complete the picture.

If nothing went wrong, Hyena would have all his memories from the past few years back as soon as he got off the table.

Of course, that was a big ’if’.

After a series of unending screams, the personality transfer finally finished, and Hyena managed to walk off the operating table alive.

Leaning on Anna for support, he drank a complimentary glass of fruit wine, clutched his aching head, and looked at everyone. "Do I remember now?" he asked.

"The fact that you have to ask means you definitely don’t," Duan Fei said with certainty.

Anna patted Hyena’s back reassuringly. "Relax, it’s okay. Even if you don’t have your memories from the past few years, I’ll still like you."

"Anna..."

"I know you’re touched, but let’s save certain things for when we get back to our room."

"No, that’s not it. I was going to say, could you please not look so happy about this?"

"...Fine."

Rubbing his temples, Hyena felt dejected.

The Bartender patted his back reassuringly. "This sort of thing happens all the time, so there’s no need to be down. Besides, some people don’t remember anything at first, but after a while, their memories slowly start to come back on their own."

The Bartender’s words gave Hyena a glimmer of hope.

After thanking the Bartender, they asked if they could stay the night, and then they settled in to rest.

As usual, Lone Ranger went to Lear to get some pointers on his Skills, and Duan Fei tagged along to listen.

According to Lone Ranger, Lear was a combat master himself. He had multiple Skills that had broken past the level of Great Success to reach the Master realm.

Lone Ranger was even certain that Lear must have one or two Skills that had reached the even higher Grandmaster realm; otherwise, there was no explaining his unbelievable combat prowess.

Seeing Duan Fei tag along, Lear told Lone Ranger to continue his meditation off to the side, then turned to Duan Fei and asked amiably, "Boss, what is it you’d like to learn?"

"The proper way to use a crowbar."

Lear studied Duan Fei for a moment before saying with a sigh of resignation, "I think it should be obvious that I’m a master of Swordsmanship. You want me to teach you how to use a crowbar?"

"How can the sword be such an inflexible weapon! As long as you have the sword in your heart, a crowbar is a sword!"

"That sounds profound, but when I think about it, it makes no sense at all. Whatever. Give me your crowbar, let me think."

Taking the crowbar, Lear began to observe its shape, considering its points of leverage and contemplating how on earth this thing could be combined with Swordsmanship.

As he mulled it over, he seemed to feel a flash of inspiration. He began to move, his feet tracing out steps as he started to swing the crowbar.

While swinging the crowbar, he felt for its center of balance, grasped the mechanics of how to generate force with it, and finally, seemed to reach an epiphany.

He handed the crowbar back to Duan Fei and said, "Show me your personal terminal."

He tapped something on Duan Fei’s personal terminal. Duan Fei felt something flow into his body, and then he heard a system notification.

"You have learned the special passive skill [Crowbar Swordsmanship].

[Crowbar Swordsmanship (Beginner)]: How can the sword be such an inflexible weapon?

You can now wield a crowbar as you would a sword, and it will benefit from your Swordsmanship bonuses."

"You have learned the passive skill [Swordsmanship (Beginner)].

[Swordsmanship (Beginner)]: The art of wielding a sword. You gain a bonus to damage and accuracy when using swords. As this skill was bestowed by a Grandmaster, you will be able to break through the Master-level bottleneck more quickly."

Duan Fei hadn’t expected him to be so generous, giving him two Skills right after they’d met.

Especially Crowbar Swordsmanship, which had actually made his joke a reality, allowing him to wield a crowbar like a longsword.

’Crowbar Sword Saint. Just the thought of it is awesome!’

"Thank you, Mr. Li."

"You’re welcome. I’m tired, so I’m going to get some rest."

"Take care, Mr. Li."

After seeing Lear off, Duan Fei was about to get some rest himself when he saw Hyena scrambling toward him.

His face was pale, and he trembled uncontrollably as he grabbed Duan Fei’s hand. "A ghost... a ghost..." he stammered.

"Did Anna take off her makeup?"

"Worse than that! I saw a ghost! It’s here! It’s right at the door! It’s coming!"

Duan Fei looked quizzically at the doorway, but he saw nothing there.

"Uh, are you sure you saw something?"

"It’s real, you have to believe me! He’s coming closer! That guy is talking to me, he told me..."

"He told you to do what?"

"He told me... to remember to use the toilet."

An awkward atmosphere filled the room. The smile on Hyena’s face grew increasingly stiff.

"Uh, that’s really what he said."

Duan Fei looked at Hyena with a sigh. ’Did the memory transfer mess him up?’ he wondered.

According to Hyena’s description, the being was a blurry, indistinct figure that made his skin crawl just by looking at it.

Ever since he appeared, he had been tailing Hyena, constantly making unintelligible murmuring sounds. What he’d just said was the only coherent sentence he had uttered so far.

However, after saying that sentence, the strange entity seemed to be gradually becoming more coherent.

It seemed to be observing the world through Hyena’s eyes, and after a period of constant observation, it spoke a second meaningful sentence.

"Luminous Heavy Industry. Safe. Number 3187. Password RX-3324."

Such a coherent statement didn’t sound like something Hyena could have just made up. It made Duan Fei feel that perhaps the memory transfer hadn’t been a complete failure after all.
