There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 208 - 74: You’ve Finally ArrivedIf the citizens of the Glazed Tower’s lower levels were in the habit of consulting an almanac, they might have seen that today was: "Auspicious for: Staying home, playing dead. Inauspicious for: Going out, salted fish."
And if they were to investigate further what "salted fish" meant, the Salted Fish Squad, led by Duan Fei, would use their gun barrels to tell them that salted fish is truth.
From the shadows, Annie was the first to emerge.
Her brawny physique stood out from the crowd. The sudden appearance of the muscular woman caused the young man giving a speech to simply freeze up, his brain short-circuiting.
An intensely muscular woman appearing out of nowhere completely shattered his understanding of the world, to say nothing of the half-naked old man, the menacing mechanical Bartender, the tall figure in a white robe, and a rather handsome young man who followed after.
’Where did they come from?’
’Is holographic technology this advanced now?’
The flood of information completely overwhelmed the young man’s brain. In the end, he could only force out a single phrase: "All are equal."
"Equal my ass!"
Hyena held out a hand, and Anna immediately slapped a pistol into his palm.
A gunshot rang out. The youth was struck in the abdomen, blood spraying everywhere.
Screams erupted, followed by the even more piercing blare of alarms. The security shutters on every passageway in the Glazed Tower slammed down, and aerial drones began to converge on their position, preparing to hunt the group down.
Raising a hand toward the drones in the air, the Bartender whispered, "Bang!"
A bullet shot out from his fingertip. The 12.7mm sniper round flew toward the drones, piercing straight through one and sending it plummeting from the sky.
Advancing step by step, the Bartender paused every few paces to fire at the security shutters. The special operations teams hidden behind them were instantly pierced through, and almost no one made it past.
On the ceiling, another special operations team was just about to move when they heard an old man’s aged voice.
"Don’t move."
The twelve-man squad was about to turn and fire when they saw their own bodies disintegrating. Their expensive cybernetics had been sliced apart at some unknown moment, and now they were falling to the ground in pieces.
Retracting the Mantis Blades in his arms, the old man said with a sigh of regret, "I told you not to move."
Having repelled the first wave of special operations teams, Duan Fei and the others charged for the elevator.
Seeing Duan Fei charge toward her, the elevator attendant’s face went pale with fright, and she frantically mashed the ’close door’ button.
Just as the elevator doors were about to close, the attendant let out a sigh of relief. But then, she saw an iron hand shove into the gap. Fingers forged from steel strained with immense force, relentlessly resisting the pressure of the closing doors.
Finally, with a roar, the doors were violently pried open. Two clear palm prints were left embedded in the alloy, a testament to the intruder’s monstrous strength.
Anna, covered in coolant, squeezed into the elevator. She stared at the pale-faced attendant for a moment before asking, "Where’d you buy that outfit? It looks pretty good."
The elevator attendant looked up at Anna, began to sob in terror, and then started taking off her clothes.
"That’s not what I meant. Don’t make a scene." Anna shrugged. "Hyena, you look one more time and I’ll gouge your eyes out!"
This elevator could go as high as the 300th floor.
With just the push of a button, Duan Fei and his team could secure victory in this event and deliver a slap in the face to Luminous Heavy Industry.
However, Duan Fei’s objective wasn’t to win the event, but to use it to find what Hyena’s visions had pointed to.
He had already run through the entire plan in his mind over a dozen times, breaking down each step with painstaking detail. He had even used his Talent to calculate the probability of success, ensuring every stage would be flawless.
Duan Fei understood the logic behind his actions, but the others did not.
All they saw was Duan Fei press the button for the 57th floor and then say to the Bartender, "I’m going to count to twenty. The moment I finish, open fire on whatever’s outside the door. Try to empty your ammo."
The Bartender gave Duan Fei a confused look but nodded anyway, then shook his shoulders.
Under his control, the Bartender’s shoulders shifted like Lego bricks. His broad shoulders began to reconfigure, transforming into a heavy machine gun.
As Duan Fei began to count down, the Bartender poured a full case of ammunition into his mouth.
"Three, two, one!"
The countdown finished just as the doors slid open, and a countless hail of bullets poured out.
Amid the torrential downpour of gunfire, a few muffled groans could be heard, but they were instantly drowned out by the roar of the weapon.
When the elevator doors opened completely, the group discovered a squad lying just outside, annihilated by the Bartender the very moment they had sprung their ambush.
"How did you know?!" the Lone Ranger shouted in disbelief. "Your Talent is precognition!"
"Stop guessing. You’ll never figure it out. Alright, Lear, give the ceiling a couple of stabs."
Lear tilted his head back, closing his eyes to focus on the faint stirrings from above.
Then, his body shot upward. The Mantis Blades in his arms pierced through the elevator’s ceiling. When he withdrew them, they were coated in machine oil.
Flicking the oil from his Mantis Blades, he looked at Duan Fei in confusion. "How did you know? Their steps were too faint to hear."
"Just follow me. I don’t have time to explain. This elevator is out of commission for now, but we can take the stairs."
Prying open a nearby door with a Crowbar, Duan Fei said to the others, "Let’s go. The stairwell is through here. We need to get to the 111th floor as fast as possible. Oh, and Lone Ranger, you stay here. There’s a guy you’ll need to handle in a bit. No need to take him out, just draw him away."
The Lone Ranger was completely baffled by Duan Fei’s arrangements.
Ever since the operation began, he’d realized that Duan Fei was unusually familiar with this place, moving as if he were in his own home.
But he didn’t know that these arrangements, which took only a few minutes to execute, were the result of an entire night Duan Fei had spent planning, all to achieve this precise outcome.
He nodded numbly, watching as Duan Fei and the others sprinted upstairs while he stood guard at the entrance to the stairwell.
Before long, the floor of the stairwell began to vibrate.
Some kind of behemoth was approaching. He could feel the immense roar of its advance before he could even see it.
Then, a massive mechanical centipede shot up from below. A barrage of laser beams erupted from its black, steel-plated back, instantly piercing the Lone Ranger, who couldn’t dodge in time.
But in the next instant, the Lone Ranger’s body vanished. A battle-scarred Doppelganger took his place, allowing him to reappear instantly to the side.
Decisively retreating, the Lone Ranger cursed Duan Fei under his breath while dodging the lasers at his back and fleeing in another direction.
Meanwhile, Duan Fei and the others continued to race through the stairwells.
At every junction, Duan Fei would quickly order everyone to change direction and head for a different stairwell.
The others were completely baffled by Duan Fei’s movements, but to the eyes watching the surveillance monitors, it seemed as if Duan Fei had hacked the entire system, allowing him to change direction at any moment to evade their pursuers.
They had never encountered a situation like this and had no idea how to react.
Pursuit was useless. Weapons were useless. Their target was like an omniscient god, openly toying with them.
Just as they were at their wits’ end, they heard a soft laugh.
Someone was watching the screen, and they let out a quiet chuckle.
"Duan Someone, you’ve finally arrived."
