There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 228 - 94: We Meet Again, President NemoAs Lone Ranger followed the Werewolf Captain, he reported the situation to Duan Fei.
When he heard Lone Ranger had run into one of the locals, Duan Fei asked, "Is she a girl with long, blonde hair? And is she pretty?"
"I took a screenshot of that. You’d better watch yourself if you don’t want Jinghong to see it."
"So what if she sees it?" Duan Fei was puzzled. "It’s not like I said anything I shouldn’t have."
Lone Ranger was at a loss for words. He couldn’t help but feel sorry for Jinghong.
’At the rate they’re going, they’ll be lucky to even kiss by the time they’re eighty. Even God would get impatient.’
After brushing him off, Lone Ranger had the Werewolf Captain pause, then slipped into an adjacent room.
The Werewolf Captain followed him in and saw that it was a specimen room.
Brain after brain was stored in containers, each with electrodes attached to monitor its activity.
These brains were all damaged. The wounds on each one were clearly intentional, showing that the person who inflicted them had none of the empathy expected of a human, and felt no guilt whatsoever for their actions.
"What is this place?" Lone Ranger asked, his brow furrowed.
"A laboratory. A place where the Sin President conducts his experiments. All of our brains were processed here. Different cutting methods were chosen for each person so that after we were resurrected, we would grow into a specific form."
The calmer the Werewolf Captain’s voice was, the more disgusted Lone Ranger felt.
He considered himself no saint, but he had never imagined someone could be this depraved.
Silently sentencing the Sin President to death in his mind, Lone Ranger exited the room and continued his Reconnaissance.
During his Reconnaissance, he inevitably encountered Werewolves that had merged with puppets, but they weren’t difficult to clean up.
Conventional firearms were a bit tricky against such bizarre entities, but Lone Ranger’s Shadow Energy was a death sentence for them.
That, combined with his weapons forged from Lamium Ore, made Lone Ranger a natural predator to these slow-moving things.
He effortlessly teleported behind a merged Werewolf, plunged his newly-forged Sleeve Sword into its throat, and the Shadow Energy on the blade erupted, blowing the Werewolf’s head apart.
Watching the Power that erupted from Lone Ranger, the Werewolf Captain asked in confusion, "What’s with your weapon?"
"New tech from Luminous Heavy Industry," Lone Ranger said casually.
"What’s the principle behind it?"
"Would you even understand if I told you?"
"...That’s true. I don’t have a brain."
The Werewolf Captain sighed and looked at his dead teammate. "I hope he doesn’t get cyberpsychosis when he’s resurrected."
The Werewolf Captain’s attitude surprised Lone Ranger, who couldn’t help but ask, "You guys are already in such a miserable state. Wouldn’t it be better to just go crazy?"
"Are we miserable?" the captain asked, confused.
"How are you not? Your debt keeps piling up, your boss is a scumbag, and you have to deal with a mountain of crap every day. You don’t call that miserable?"
"But we’re alive."
Lone Ranger was stunned by this statement. After a long moment, he nodded. "You’re right. There’s nothing better than being alive."
At that moment, Lone Ranger felt that perhaps it was a blessing that the other guy didn’t have a brain.
After dealing with all the puppets along the way, Lone Ranger finally reached the end of the base: the Sin President’s shelter.
Behind a meter-thick sheet of bulletproof glass, the Sin President was curled up in a ball, staring in terror at the newly arrived Lone Ranger.
Pointing at Lone Ranger, he shrieked hysterically, "That guy is the Death God! He’s here to kill me! Help! Somebody save me!"
Beside the Sin President, an old man was watching a monitor. He nodded in approval. "As expected of the Lone Ranger. It seems your skills have improved."
The moment Lone Ranger saw the old man, a line of text flew out, and his own corruption meter began to rise rapidly.
Taking a step back, Lone Ranger tried to slow the spread of corruption within his body as much as possible and made out the words.
"Source of Corruption."
Seeing those words, Lone Ranger breathed a sigh of relief.
’Finally, the instance objective.’
’This instance has been going on for four whole days. I’ve accompanied Duan Someone to countless places, gathered endless clues, and now, finally, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.’
’This was so damn hard!’
Looking up, Lone Ranger suppressed the urge to cry and asked respectfully, "May I ask for your name, sir?"
"Clockmaker."
"A Pseudo-man?"
"Indeed!"
A Sleeve Arrow shot out. Forged from Lamium Ore and infused with Shadow Energy, it vanished the moment it touched the meter-thick wall, only to reappear on the other side.
The Clockmaker raised a hand. A golden pocket watch dangled from his fingers, its hands beginning to spin rapidly, causing time within the entire room to accelerate.
The Shadow Energy on the Sleeve Arrow bore the brunt of it. The Energy within it decayed continuously until only a tiny amount remained in the arrow, the rest dissipating into the air.
Catching the now-harmless Sleeve Arrow, the Clockmaker noted Lone Ranger’s skill Level, then shook his head. "A failure. To be destroyed by this Level of Shadow Energy proves that merging a Pseudo-man with a Werewolf is not a good path. But this failure is not a tragedy. Every wrong turn brings us one step closer to the right path."
"Then am I useless, friend?" the Sin President asked, crying.
"Yes, you are. And not just you—the entire Sinful Company is useless now."
"Then what should I do, friend?"
Grabbing the Clockmaker’s clothes, the Sin President asked through his tears.
"Do whatever you want. I have no interest in knowing. Nemo, let’s go."
Nemo, who had been silent the entire time, shot a vicious glare at Lone Ranger.
But he also knew that the Clockmaker didn’t have the strength to act right now, and he himself was no match for Lone Ranger.
From the looks of it, of the four giants, Eternal Future and the Sinful Corporation were now useless, but Starlink Company and Nirvana Company were still under the Clockmaker’s control.
’As long as we regroup and maneuver things, we might still have a chance to defeat these bastards.’
Glaring fiercely at Lone Ranger one last time, Nemo followed the Clockmaker through the door he had opened.
However, instead of arriving at Nirvana Company as they should have, they inexplicably found themselves in the central square of the Metropolis.
Before them stood Duan Fei and his companions, watching them with a smile.
"We meet again, Nemo."
