There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 230 - 96: War, War, and Still WarNemo spun around and fled in a frenzy, repeatedly pressing the pocket watch clutched to his chest.
With each press, a probability-based clone of himself was summoned, which then charged recklessly toward Duan Fei.
However, the clones with high probability had already been eliminated. The remaining ones had very low probability, and their abilities were pitifully weak. They were annihilated by Duan Fei’s Crowbar the moment they appeared.
Nemo considered turning back to fight Duan Fei to the death, but the sight of the pendant-like Lord Hasshaku on Duan Fei’s back made his courage evaporate along with his cold sweat.
He charged madly into a casino, shoved the security guards who’d come to investigate into Duan Fei’s path, and continued to flee for his life.
He ran until he was completely exhausted, finally slumping against a wall to sit. ’He probably won’t be able to catch up now, right?’
’After all, my Level is higher, my stamina bar is longer, and I have decent Equipment. He shouldn’t be able to...’
At that moment, a sound ripped through the air. Riding the Spider Suit, Duan Fei appeared out of nowhere, carried in Lord Hasshaku’s arms as he landed right in front of Nemo.
Tapping the Crowbar in his hand, Duan Fei crouched before the panting Nemo and grabbed him by the hair.
"Keep going. I can play this game all day."
"Duan Fei, don’t go too far!" Nemo gasped.
"Fine. Give me the intel you have, and I might consider delaying the release of ’President Nemo, Part Two.’ I’ll kill you after you’ve talked."
"I’m dead either way!"
"At least you’ll die with some dignity."
Nemo looked at Duan Fei, then lowered his head in defeat. "I don’t know much. I only know that the Clockmaker is corrupting Zero, the Level 9 Citizen."
"And his goal?"
"The Level 9 Citizen controls the entire moral code. Corrupting Zero will corrupt the entire network, and in turn, all the citizens."
"The Clockmaker is an event boss?"
"Yes. He’s also the president of Nirvana Company."
"Good information. So where is the Clockmaker now?"
"With the Level 9 Citizen, in Sky City. But you have to take a spaceship or a space elevator to get there. You can try Starlink Company; they’ll have a way."
"Anything else you want to say?"
"Nothing. Just do it. Make it quick."
Duan Fei finished him off with a clean strike of his Crowbar, then stretched lazily.
’It’s all finally coming together.’
All the clues had converged. The game’s final objective was now clear, and he knew his ultimate destination was right above him.
Lifting his head, he could see a point of light in the sky.
The dazzling speck was exceptionally bright against the night sky. That was Sky City, where the Level 9 Citizen resided.
Not far away, the clones Nemo had created were still being slaughtered. Growing steadily weaker, they were no match for Duan Fei’s allies. Only annihilation awaited them.
Seeing that the situation was well in hand, Duan Fei contacted the Lone Ranger. "What’s your status?"
"Just about done. You can head over now."
Following the Lone Ranger’s directions, Duan Fei found a nondescript-looking warehouse.
He found a hidden door inside that led to an elevator. Duan Fei took it all the way down to the lowest level.
The underground area was littered with melted corpses. Shattered pieces of Werewolf Equipment were scattered among the molten flesh, interspersed with the joints of various puppets.
Pinching his nose, Duan Fei walked past the grisly scene and made his way to the safe room on the lowest level, where he took in the sight before him.
The safe room’s bulletproof glass had been corroded through. Inside, the Sin President was curled into a ball, faced by the Lone Ranger and the Werewolf Captain.
Without any threats from Duan Fei, the Sin President, biting a blanket and sobbing, confessed everything he had done.
"Fusing the Werewolves with puppets wasn’t my idea! I was just doing a favor for a friend. It might have been a one-sided friendship, but he was still my friend!"
"What are we Werewolves to you?" the Werewolf Captain asked.
"Tools, what else? You don’t really think I’d get attached to tools, do you? Oh crap, is this the part where I’m supposed to beg for my life? Please, I’ve always thought of you as family! Don’t hurt me!"
Looking at this maggot squirming in a cesspool, Duan Fei wondered what the hell the instance’s designers were thinking, making a guy like this a president.
’Reality doesn’t need to be logical, but this is a game!’
Watching the president spill his guts, the Lone Ranger also felt disgusted.
"Duan Fei, what’s the plan?"
"Let him live. What he’s done is disgusting, but we can still use him for propaganda."
Just then, the Werewolf Captain, who had been silent until now, spoke up. "Can you leave him to me?"
"Sure. Just don’t kill him."
"I won’t."
The Werewolf Captain found the secretary, who had already been fused with a puppet, and unhesitatingly threw them into the safe room.
Amid the Sin President’s screams, the secretary, the puppet, and the president himself fused together, eventually becoming an amorphous lump of flesh.
This mass of flesh absorbed all the remaining food in the room, its body swelling to fill the entire safe room.
The president’s head was pressed against the glass wall, his face twisted and distorted by the pressure and surrounding fat into a hideous visage.
Having fused with the puppet, he had become a type of Pseudo-man. Unless the world were to discover supernatural powers, he would likely be trapped in that body forever.
An eternal life. An eternal prison.
And yet, the president had not lost consciousness.
Realizing that this might be his eternal fate, he stared at the three people outside and began to groan.
"Kill... kill me..."
Seeing this, the Werewolf Captain finally smiled.
"You deserve this."
Duan Fei watched the scene unfold, finding it rather ironic.
The Sin President, who had always been so afraid of dying, had ended up like this.
He no longer had to fear being killed, but he could also never escape.
Shrugging, Duan Fei turned to the Werewolf Captain. "Interested in making some big moves with me?"
"I’m in for anything, but you have to tell me how you killed me. I still can’t figure it out."
"Don’t worry, I will."
With the Sin President unable to appear in public and his secretary temporarily absent, the Werewolf Captain, as expected, became the new public face of the Sinful Company.
After she announced the end of the corporate war and the surrender of the Sinful Corporation, the president of Luminous Heavy Industry, who had been leading the assault, finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Although he hadn’t been able to show off his company’s secret weapon, forcing the Sinful Corporation to surrender was a testament to Luminous Heavy Industry’s power. This won back the favor of investors for the once poorly-regarded company, and its stock price soared once more.
Seeing his company’s stock price, the president of Luminous Heavy Industry let out a long sigh of relief. He knew his re-election was now secure, and maybe even the one after that.
Not only that, he could also recover the "morality points" he’d fronted for the cause. Everything had worked out perfectly.
’Thank you, Duan Fei!’
As soon as the barrier around Metropolis came down, he rushed inside and found Duan Fei.
He was just about to deliver the hour’s worth of ass-kissing he’d prepared when Duan Fei cut him off. "Don’t get comfortable. Prepare for war. Next stop: Starlink Company."
The president of Luminous Heavy Industry immediately swallowed his words.
’Can’t you take a break for even a second?!’
