There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 72 - 5: I Won’t Let You Be HappyIn a roadside café, a man set down his white, hooded cloak, sat in a sunny spot, and enjoyed a moment of peace while sipping milk tea and eating a green matcha cake.
Things in Love City weren’t expensive, and many were free for male Descenders. As long as you weren’t extravagant, you could enjoy just about anything.
Besides, you didn’t have to worry about gaining weight from high-calorie food in the game. For the man, this was his way of relaxing—coming into the game for some dessert and to kill a player or two. It was the only way he could cope with his daily life.
He was half Huaxia, a quarter Russian, and a quarter Germanic. This lineage gave his features a defined, three-dimensional look without seeming out of place.
And thanks to the anti-aging effect of his Huaxia heritage, he didn’t have to worry about his looks fading one day. This was what he thanked his father for the most.
’Thanks, Dad! It’s awesome that you’re a Huaxia Person!’
Sipping his coffee, the man quietly enjoyed the moment of tranquility. Suddenly, his pupils constricted. He had spotted the last person he ever wanted to see.
After quickly confirming his ID was hidden by an item, he swiftly changed into a tracksuit and continued to drink his coffee as if nothing was wrong. He only occasionally watched the other person from the corner of his eye, repeating a single phrase in his mind: ’Just go away.’
But things didn’t go as he wished. Duan Fei, with the bird on his shoulder, walked straight toward the café and saw the sign by the entrance.
"Free coffee and dessert for Descenders. Handsome ones get extra donuts—the more handsome you are, the more you get. This shop really knows how to do business."
"Doesn’t that mean I get infinite donuts?" Yan Yuan cried out excitedly.
"...Your confidence is as cheap as your looks."
"Master, are you complimenting me or insulting me?"
Sitting not far away, the man feigned calmness and sipped his milk tea, but he couldn’t help but glance at his three donuts, a competitive thought stirring within him.
"Hmm, they gave me six donuts. Thanks," Duan Fei said happily.
"It should have been ten, but with you included, Master, we only got six," Yan Yuan sighed. "But Master, since we’re close, I’ll give you two."
"Get lost, you ugly bird."
Confirming again that he only had three, the man felt even more annoyed.
Just then, Duan Fei glanced back at the man and asked the staff, "What kind of cake is he having? Oh, matcha cake. Hmm, I’ll have one of those, thanks."
Carrying his milk tea and cake, Duan Fei sat down in front of the man and said amicably, "How long have you been here? How about we share some intel?"
The man put down his fork, fighting the urge to murder Duan Fei. He knit his brows just right, putting on a puzzled expression. "Do you know me?"
"Shocking! So this is what the Lone Ranger actually looks like!"
The Lone Ranger clamped a hand over Duan Fei’s mouth, lowered his voice, and said fiercely, "Shut up. I don’t want anyone to know this is what I look like. Just call me Cheng Han from now on. Blink if you understand."
Normally, when operating as the Lone Ranger, he kept his face hidden under a cloak so that no one knew what he really looked like.
After all, it was difficult to change your appearance in this game. Once people knew what the Lone Ranger looked like, it would be hard for him to hide in the future.
Seeing Duan Fei blink, the Lone Ranger released his hand and said irritably, "How did you recognize me? I thought my disguise was pretty good."
"Your posture, your tone, your way of speaking—none of it has changed. I could tell it was you at a glance. It’s simple, right, Yan Yuan?"
"Master, when you’re showing off your freakish side, can you please leave me out of it?" Yan Yuan said earnestly. "I may not be human, but I don’t think very many people can do that."
Duan Fei stroked his chin, puzzled, and looked at the Lone Ranger. "Really? You can’t?"
"That ability of yours is basically a superpower. Don’t talk like it’s something everyone can do."
"Fine."
Shrugging, Duan Fei sat back down across from the Lone Ranger. "Cheng Han," he said, taking a bite of cake, "how long have you been here? Got any important intel?"
"Why should I tell you?"
"How much do you think an analysis post about the Lone Ranger would sell for on the forums? The kind with pictures?"
The Lone Ranger bit down on his fork, nearly bending the steel tines.
’So long, my quiet time.’
’Farewell, my moment of peace.’
Sighing in resignation, the Lone Ranger picked up a donut, imagined it was Duan Fei’s flesh, and viciously tore a piece off.
Chewing the sweet donut, the Lone Ranger said, "I’m a Shadow Assassin, so I can see Shadow Energy. You can think of Shadow Energy as the world’s Dark Energy. It’s the source of a lot of ghosts, anomalies, and so on."
"Uh-huh, and?"
"And, Love City is filled with all sorts of Shadow Energy. You could say this place is crawling with ghosts. I think the Icefield Walkers know about this, but they haven’t said anything. After all, the Icefield Walkers shouldn’t be short on Professionals with Supernatural Power. They should be able to see it too."
"Hmm, I see."
"What do you see?" the Lone Ranger asked expectantly.
Although he was furious with Duan Fei, the Lone Ranger still had a high opinion of his analytical skills.
After all, Duan Fei was the first person to figure out his Talent after only a few limited interactions.
"This has nothing to do with the dungeon. I figured it out. You’re from Eternal Night. Even if you’re not a member, you must have been hired by them to come here."
This time, the Lone Ranger really did bend the fork with his teeth.
If killing players here weren’t completely useless, the Lone Ranger guaranteed Duan Fei would already be a dead man.
’Damn clever bastard.’
Though it was only a momentary pause, in Duan Fei’s eyes, it was a tacit admission—an admission that the Lone Ranger was indeed from Eternal Night.
His cover blown, the Lone Ranger leaned back in his chair, resigned. "How did you figure it out?"
"Motive. You’re the Lone Ranger, a star player, ranked 11th. The reward from the Icefield Walkers is too small for you, so you wouldn’t have come just for that. Something else must have attracted you here."
"Hmm, that’s one point, but it only proves I have other motives. It doesn’t prove I’m with Eternal Night."
"Your way of thinking. Whether you’ve realized it or not, everything you said serves to smear the Icefield Walkers. It’s perfectly normal to withhold some important information, but in your telling, it becomes a crime. Therefore, I concluded you must be on the opposing side of the Icefield Walkers—which means you’re with Eternal Night."
"Alright, you got me."
The Lone Ranger raised his hands in a gesture of surrender and said with a wry smile, "You’re a dangerous man. So, what are you going to do now?"
"Report you to the Icefield Walkers for a reward, of course. Don’t worry, I won’t reveal what you look like."
"Can’t we be flexible about this? I’ll give you a different reward, at least thirty percent more than what the Icefield Walkers are offering."
As a star player, the Lone Ranger could definitely offer a substantial reward.
But Duan Fei just shook his head. "Under other circumstances, maybe. But I’ve already accepted employment from the Icefield Walkers. On something like this, there’s no room for flexibility."
The Lone Ranger frowned at Duan Fei, feeling that the man’s moral compass was a bit strange.
Reckless and unrestrained when there’s no contract, but strictly abiding by one when there is. People like him were truly rare.
But he could also sense Duan Fei’s resolve and knew there was no getting out of this.
Shaking his head in regret, he could only say, "Alright, I understand."
Right in front of Duan Fei, he put on his Assassin’s hooded robe, hiding his face, and shouted, "Is anyone from the Icefield Walkers here? I surrender! I was sent by Eternal Night!"
Staring at the Lone Ranger, who had just exposed himself, Duan Fei asked in disbelief, "What are you doing?!"
"I’d rather turn myself in than let you get the reward!"
"Just for that?!"
"What else? You’ve pissed me off this much; did you think I was going to let you feel good about it?!"
"...You’re a piece of work."
