There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 78 - 11: PVP Has BegunThe most important thing about playing games is to have fun.
As an avid gamer, Duan Fei dabbled in all sorts of games and loved every single genre.
Roguelikes, MOBAs, the Souls series, Metroidvanias...
He also loved PvP. Whether he was the one killing or the one being killed, he reveled in the experience, unable to pull himself away.
However, *Abyss* was a game that emphasized cooperation, a fact Duan Fei understood well.
He hadn’t had much time for PvP during the previous Holy Grail War, as he’d been busy creating Yan Yuan’s body. It wasn’t exactly a regret, though.
But here, PvP was definitely an option.
This was also why he thought Nemo was an interesting guy. When they first met, he’d sensed that Nemo lacked respect for his own guild leader, yet he consulted the leader on every matter. There had to be a single, unifying reason for such a contradictory attitude.
Afterward, he discovered that Nemo had a habit of pinning all the blame on the guild leader and never made any effort to salvage the leader’s reputation.
Logically, a guild leader like that should have been reduced to a figurehead. Yet, Nemo knew everything about Icefield Walker inside and out. This made Duan Fei suspect that the so-called "guild leader" didn’t exist at all.
’It was all Nemo’s scheme!’
’Messing with a bad guy like that feels awesome, doesn’t it!’
Casting [Rough Healing Technique] on himself, Duan Fei sprinted toward the dark side of the building.
His 28 points in agility were 2.8 times that of an ordinary person, allowing him to run a hundred-meter dash in under four seconds. At this speed, the Icefield Walkers behind him couldn’t possibly catch up.
However, the Icefield Walkers must have had someone with a tracking Profession. Just as Duan Fei was about to disappear into a hallway, a blue marker appeared over his head. Now his position would be constantly revealed, allowing them to hunt him down.
But Duan Fei didn’t care.
After the effect of his [Spiritual Armor] wore off, he quickly contacted Lone Ranger. "Have you finished your main quest? There’s a group of players here waiting for you to kill. You in or not?"
"Sounds like you pissed off the Icefield Walkers, and now you’re coming to me for help?"
"Yeah."
"You actually admitted it!"
"I’m just being upfront with you and offering a sweet deal at the same time, aren’t I?"
Lone Ranger sighed. He had to admit, Duan Fei was incredibly good at utilizing the resources around him.
"Alright," he told Duan Fei after a moment’s thought. "But I’ll be using stealth kills, and it’s critical they don’t detect me. I’ll silently take care of a few of them for you, but you’ll have to handle the majority yourself."
"Got it."
With their win-win agreement settled, Duan Fei saw a player appear at the mouth of the alley where he was hiding. The player charged toward him excitedly.
’Nemo must have broadcast my info and put out a bounty on me.’
Icefield Walker was a mid-sized guild composed entirely of Professionals. A Level 8 Player couldn’t even get into their outer circle.
’Nemo would probably spin the story of being killed by a Level 8 Player to save face—saying I used a sneak attack or something.’
’At the same time, he’d warn them that I have some special Skills and to be extremely careful.’
’But what Professional would actually be wary of a Level 8 Player?’
He was tempted to log off and avoid the trouble, but you couldn’t log out with hostile players nearby. A forced logout would leave his character frozen in place, easily captured. The next time he logged in, he’d find himself right next to his captor.
So, Duan Fei gave up on the idea of running. Instead, he formed his right hand into the shape of a pistol, aimed it at the player, and yelled, "BANG!"
His move was so confident that the attacker thought Duan Fei might have actually activated some special Skill.
The attacker, still in mid-air, quickly pushed off nothing, then kicked off the air again to jump a second time.
The special Skill of the Vampire Hunter Profession: [Double Jump]!
The visual effect was remarkably similar to the martial art [Vertical Cloud Ladder]. While Duan Fei was impressed, he didn’t forget to dart underneath his opponent and rush to the mouth of the alley.
The moment he heard the other player land, Duan Fei spun around and yelled again, "BANG!"
"Who do you think you’re fooling? You didn’t even cast any—"
What met his eyes was Yan Yuan’s gaze.
As a Demon Phoenix, Yan Yuan’s eyes were those of an Eye Demon, capable of firing a variety of random rays, including but not limited to: Weaken, Burn, Poison, Corrosion, and the most terrifying of all, Instant Death.
And since it had two eyes, it could fire two rays at the same time.
Duan Fei had only intended to stall him, but he never expected his opponent’s luck to be so abysmal. The very first ray triggered Instant Death, and the player collapsed to the ground.
"...Holy crap. With such a gap in our Levels and Attributes, the chance of an instant kill must have been one in ten thousand. Is it really okay for me to be this lucky today?" Duan Fei marveled.
"It’s our bond! I added our master-pet bond to the attack!" Yan Yuan also shouted excitedly. "So hurry up and set me up with the Black Cat! That’ll make our bond even stronger!"
"Put in the effort yourself."
Duan Fei dashed out of the alley and continued to flee for his life.
Ten minutes later, the remaining Icefield Walkers arrived. Their faces grew pale as they stared at the corpse on the ground.
To protect players’ personal property and preserve a certain game experience, a player’s corpse remains in place for one hour before automatically disappearing.
During this time, the items on the player’s body cannot be moved or removed unless someone has a special Skill or item.
"Magic attack," an Icefield Walker with the ’forensic doctor’ Profession said after examining the corpse. "It was a ray from an Eye Demon. Instant death."
Several Magic Professionals drew a sharp breath. This Level 8 Player was no ordinary opponent.
An Eye Demon’s rays were useful, but they were subject to Level and Attribute suppression. If the caster’s stats were too low, the attack would easily be resisted.
But to dare use a ray attack point-blank and score an instant kill meant the player’s pet was ridiculously strong.
Vice-President Nemo hadn’t specified, but his own body was lying on the ground, completely censored by a mosaic effect that obscured the cause of death.
But now, it seemed likely that he too had been killed by an instant death ray from Duan Someone’s pet. This further reinforced their impression that "Duan Someone has a powerful pet."
"Get a Beast Tamer over here. Have them analyze the opponent’s pet so we can set up some targeted defenses."
"Okay, but the Beast Tamer won’t be here for a bit. Should we continue the pursuit now?"
"The Eye Demon’s rays have a short cooldown. If he’s really that powerful, we’d just be serving ourselves up on a platter."
"But the President said to find and capture Duan Someone as quickly as possible..."
The players glanced at one another, then shrugged.
’A President that annoying definitely won’t be paying us extra for this.’
’We get paid for slacking, and we get paid for searching. If the pay is the same, why not slack off?’
"Good point. Let’s just wait, then."
And that wait would invite disaster.
Though only a few minutes had passed, Lone Ranger had already found Duan Fei, who was hiding in the shadows and waiting for his [Magic Bullet]’s cooldown to finish.
He clapped the other man on the shoulder, catching the Crowbar that came swinging at him with a bare hand. Lone Ranger then tossed a piece of chalk to Duan Fei.
"[Evil’s Chalk], Uncontaminated, Purple Quality.
Description: Apply this chalk to a weapon. After killing an enemy with that weapon, there is a chance to obtain one item from their inventory. The effect disappears when the chalk marks fade."
"Lone Ranger, this is a hell of a gift."
