A Lagrange Point is a location in space where a small object, under the gravitational pull of two large bodies, remains in a stable position relative to them.
According to that mysterious voice, Love City had been drawn away from its original world by something in the Void.
But at the same time, it was also being pulled back by its original world, and today, it had finally reached a state of equilibrium.
Now, all it would take is a slight push to knock Love City out of orbit and send it flying back toward its original world, completing its journey home.
As the scientists began their work, the Black Tower started generating Energy bubbles at a set frequency.
These Energy bubbles looked just like transparent soap bubbles, but their thin film was an Energy membrane generated by the Black Tower. It sealed the Energy inside, temporarily preventing its release.
Once they flew out of Love City, the bubbles would arrange themselves along a specific trajectory and begin to release their Energy.
The explosive force would create ripples in the Void, generating the thrust needed to push the city, alter its orbit, and send it home.
Duan Fei didn’t understand any of these explanations.
"To be honest, I don’t get it either," Bai Yang said. "But it’s fine as long as someone does."
Soon, the Energy bubbles were ready. Countless transparent orbs lined up in the Void like a trail of pebbles, ready to guide Love City back to its rightful place.
When the first Energy bubble discharged, Duan Fei felt the world around him seem to pause for the briefest of moments before returning to normal.
The ground beneath his feet remained as steady as ever; there was no sensation of movement.
But a series of cheers erupted from the scientists stationed in the Black Tower, a clear sign they had achieved their goal.
Humans have no organs for perceiving the Void, so Duan Fei couldn’t see that the entire city had already begun its flight through the emptiness, drawing closer to its original world.
This would be a long journey. After all, the Void wasn’t linear; it was full of randomness and unpredictability.
The return trip could take a day, or it could take over a decade.
But that didn’t matter.
Love City had been gone for too long. So long that its people had forgotten what their original world looked like, so long that they had evolved into an entirely different civilization.
But regardless, today, they were finally going home.
Hearing the good news from the scientists, Bai Hua let out a long sigh of relief. She bowed deeply to Duan Fei and the others. "Thank you all so much," she said solemnly. "I will never forget your kindness."
"You’re welcome. As for the contract, we’ll leave that to you."
"Mm."
With Love City on its way home, the Golden Contract was officially fulfilled. This place now served as the official base for the Salted Fish Inn.
Because of the contract, guild members would possess permanent keys, allowing them to come and go as they pleased. Non-members, however, would need a temporary key to gain access.
However, Duan Fei’s guild had no one with the talent for making keys, so for the time being, only his own members could get in and out.
After confirming there were no further issues, Duan Fei began to inspect the benefits that Love City had to offer.
First, there was Energy.
Thanks to the Black Tower, an Otherworld Machine, and the fact that Duan Fei and Jinghong could generate massive amounts of Energy, the Energy here was exceptionally cheap.
On top of that, the contract stipulated that Duan Fei and the others could each receive five thousand Abyss Coins’ worth of Energy per day. This Energy was a hot commodity in other cities; even the game system could sell it for them.
Furthermore, as Love City’s Energy generation rate increased, this income would gradually rise as well.
Duan Fei had no intention of selling this Energy, however. It was tied to Love City’s second function: Enchantment.
High-intensity Energy could alter the state of matter, and the Black Tower’s own matter reorganizer could restructure items on a small scale, granting them strange new properties.
To put it simply, it was for adding modifiers to items.
Of course, the process of adding these modifiers was uncontrollable. It involved profound-sounding theories like wave-particle duality and the uncertainty principle, and the final outcome was just as unpredictable.
In short: rerolling stats.
After reading about the Black Tower’s second function, it took Duan Fei a while to grasp its meaning. He couldn’t help but marvel at how thorough the developers of *Abyss* were.
’So thorough they even had to come up with an explanation for this thing.’
’Isn’t it just a "close your eyes and see what you get" kind of deal? Do they have to be this hardcore about it?!’
’Could you maybe focus all this showing off on something that actually matters?!’
Still, since the feature existed, there was no reason not to take advantage of it.
After all, adding modifiers elsewhere in the Abyss required Forging Stones, but here, he could use his daily allotment of Energy.
As soon as he learned about this, Duan Fei immediately requested access to the feature from Bai Hua and brought the matter reorganizer back to the lounge at the Salted Fish Inn.
Staring at the boxy device, Lone Ranger frowned. "Are you sure this thing can add modifiers?"
"Would an NPC lie?"
"But it looks just like a microwave! Plus, they say the failure rate is pretty high, it consumes a ton of Energy, and the modifiers you get are completely random. Most importantly, failure destroys the Equipment!"
Duan Fei pulled out his Crowbar, unconcerned. It could take the abuse.
With that, he stuffed the Crowbar into the microwave.
Thirty seconds later, the piping hot Crowbar was done. The original [Indestructible] modifier was still there, but a new one had appeared: [Tetanus].
[Tetanus]: Anyone who touches this Crowbar has a chance of contracting tetanus. This applies to both the wielder and the target.
"This modifier is a real double-edged sword! Again."
[Edible]: It can be eaten.
"Cuihua would love this!"
[Age Fraud]: You look like a young boy.
"What’s this, a Lord Hasshaku trap? Are you planning to star in your own creepy urban legend?"
[Ranma]: You turn into a male when touched by hot water and a female when touched by cold water.
"...Incredible."
After a dozen or so attempts, Duan Fei felt that getting the [Indestructible] modifier in the first place must have been a genuine miracle.
’This stupid game has way too many trash modifiers!’
Duan Fei suspected the entire modifier pool probably contained over a hundred thousand entries, full of all sorts of bizarre options.
After using up his own Energy allowance and even borrowing some from the others, Duan Fei finally got a modifier he liked after dozens of attempts.
[Splash]: Upon hitting a target, 30% of the damage you deal will splash to all hostile targets within a one-meter radius. There is no damage cap.
With this, his Crowbar had basically become a poor man’s Frenzy Battleaxe.
Admiring his brand-new Crowbar, Duan Fei finally started to think this modifier system was kind of fun.
Then, his gaze fell upon Yan Yuan, who was perched on his shoulder...
"You can’t enchant pets, so don’t even think about it," Yan Yuan snapped. "I’m going to go find Black Cat. Call me if you need me. Is she seriously ill or something? Is that why she won’t see me? Why else can I never find her?"
"’Ah Q’s got nothing on you,’ Duan Fei muttered. ’Alright, next is to find a Stabilizing Stone to lock this modifier in place.’"
A Stabilizing Stone can permanently affix a modifier to a piece of Equipment, preventing it from being replaced.
The [Indestructible] modifier was inherently permanent, so that wasn’t an issue.
Aside from that, he had spent the last few days grinding mobs with various Demons and Ghosts. He had already cleared out all the restless spirits in Love City once over, and had finally reached Level 10.
After bidding farewell to the others, Duan Fei returned to the starting area. The instant he arrived, a clanging sound echoed from a nearby pipe, and a palm-sized Passport dropped down beside him.
He picked up the Passport and wiped the moisture from its surface, his heart pounding with excitement.
’The city... I’m finally on my way.’
