Chapter 339: Chapter 339
"It’s crazy! The entirety of Hogwarts has gone crazy!"
When Edgar’s voice exploded in the Hufflepuff dormitory, the sky outside the window had not fully brightened yet.
Gray light leaked through the gaps in the curtains, falling onto the floor like a thin snake, crawling all the way from the door to the windowsill.
Edgar stood beside his bed, clutching a sock in his hand, his expression caught between anger and despair.
He grumbled while pulling on his clothes, his voice carrying a sense of grievance, as if asking, Is the whole world targeting me?
"We have to wake up an hour earlier now just to barely find a seat in the library."
He pulled the sock onto his right foot and gave it a tug.
"I’ve never woken up this early before..."
The reason for this phenomenon was very simple.
As time passed day by day, the O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s were drawing closer.
In the hearts of Hogwarts students, these two terms were probably more terrifying than the name of Lord Voldemort.
At least Dumbledore could stand against Lord Voldemort, but no one could stand in for you during these two exams.
There were less than six months left.
Six months sounded like a long time.
But if you took away the Christmas holidays, the Easter holidays, the days with Quidditch matches, and those days when you were sick, tired, or just didn’t want to study—
The remaining time could be counted on your fingers.
And during this period, there were all sorts of assignments to write and essays to hand in.
Thus, the Hogwarts library became the most sought-after place.
Before eight o’clock every morning, the library was already packed with people.
Consequently, some people started waking up earlier and earlier.
Waking up at seven yesterday.
Six-thirty today.
Six tomorrow.
And maybe five the day after.
Especially the fifth and seventh-year students, some of whom would even wait at the library entrance at three in the morning.
Edgar scratched his head in frustration.
He looked at Lynn, his expression shifting from frustration to puzzlement.
"Why aren’t you dressed yet?"
"Forget it. I won’t wait for you."
Edgar withdrew his gaze, picked up the schoolbag on the table, and slung it over his shoulder.
"Do you need me to save you a seat... if there’s any space left in the library?"
Lynn yawned, lazily stretched a hand out from under the quilt, and waved it in Edgar’s direction.
"No need. You guys go ahead. It’s just an exam. It won’t hinder my employment."
Edgar: "..."
"Damn it! Even though my dad is a Department Head, why does he still have to look at my grades to decide whether to allow me to enter the Ministry of Magic?!"
He tugged the strap of his schoolbag up again.
"Maybe I won’t go to the Ministry of Magic after graduation. It would be much better to hang out with you."
"Hmm..."
Lynn pondered for a moment.
"In that case, your parents would most likely try their best to hack me to death."
Edgar’s expression stiffened for a moment.
The image was too beautiful to imagine.
"Alright, alright, I’m leaving."
After Edgar and the others left, the dormitory became quiet again.
After Lynn had another nap and slowly made his way to the common room, he was stunned.
"Good morning, Professor."
Professor Sprout was standing in the center of the common room.
She was wearing work clothes, holding a piece of parchment in her hand, and wearing a pair of thick dragon-hide gloves stained with soil and grass clippings, clearly indicating that she had just come from the greenhouse.
When Professor Sprout saw Lynn, the smile on her face deepened.
"Good morning, Mr. Lynn. You’ve come just in time. I have something to inform you and Mr. Diggory about."
"Professor, are you looking for me?"
Cedric’s voice came from behind Lynn, and he walked up to them in a few steps.
"Oh, Mr. Diggory has arrived too. It seems I’m quite lucky."
Professor Sprout put away her smile and handed the parchment in her hand to the two of them.
Lynn took the parchment and unfolded it.
Ministry of Magic Internship Recruitment Notice.
Lynn raised an eyebrow.
Internship?
Ministry of Magic?
Recruitment?
Put together, these three words sounded like something he wasn’t very interested in.
"Due to force majeure, the Ministry of Magic is short-staffed. The Ministry of Magic is now issuing this notice to all outstanding Hogwarts students.
"If you intend to work at the Ministry of Magic after graduation, this internship opportunity will be an excellent stepping stone for your future entry into the Ministry of Magic.
"The Ministry of Magic promises to provide students with opportunities to study in-depth within various departments during the internship.
"Considering that students still need to complete their studies, working hours are limited to weekends. The salary will be the same as the daily wage of regular Ministry of Magic employees."
Lynn scanned it roughly and moved his gaze downward.
"Number of recruits: 8."
Didn’t look like they were that desperate.
What could eight people accomplish?
"Recruitment Requirements:
"1. Age, 14 years or older.
"2. Grades, fewer than two failed subjects in previous years.
"3. Magic level must be up to standard. The more practical spells mastered, the more the Ministry of Magic will prioritize."
When Lynn saw the "Grades" section, the corner of his mouth curved.
Fewer than two failed subjects.
He searched his entire memory and couldn’t recall ever having the experience of "failing" anything.
It wasn’t that he was arrogant.
It was that he really hadn’t.
His report card always showed "O," occasionally a few "E"s.
Those were given by Snape when he was really annoyed with him during class.
But never "P" or "D."
For him, this requirement was basically nonexistent.
"Note: During this special period, the Ministry of Magic will work closely with Hogwarts and welcomes every outstanding student interested in the position. Even if you do not meet all the requirements, the Ministry of Magic will still give your application serious consideration."
When Lynn saw this last line, he couldn’t help but click his tongue.
Even if you do not meet all the requirements, the Ministry of Magic will still give your application serious consideration.
This translated to:
If you’re thick-skinned enough, you can come, but we won’t accept you.
After reading it, the two folded the parchment and handed it back to Professor Sprout.
"You can think it over carefully."
Professor Sprout took the parchment and tucked it back into her pocket.
"This is a good opportunity."
Cedric immediately gave his response.
"I’m willing to go, Professor. I’ve always wanted to go to the Ministry of Magic after graduation."
Professor Sprout’s mouth curved.
She looked very pleased.
Then she looked at Lynn.
Lynn pondered for a moment.
"Professor. Can I choose which department to go to?"
Professor Sprout thought about it.
"If you meet all the requirements..."
She paused, recalling Lynn’s glorious track record.
"You certainly do... yes, you can."
Lynn’s eyes lit up.
"That’s great, Professor. I want to go to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement."
The Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
The most powerful department in the Ministry of Magic.
It had several offices under it.
The Auror Office.
The Magical Law Enforcement Squad.
The Wizengamot Administration Services.
Every office held great power.
Every office had access to the core secrets of the wizarding world.
And not just anyone could enter any of these offices.
Professor Sprout was not surprised by Lynn’s choice.
She probably already knew that Lynn would choose this department.
Because that department had the most power and the greatest connection to Lynn’s business.
But in reality, that wasn’t the reason Lynn wanted to go to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
His thinking was actually very simple.
Since he couldn’t kill the Socket-Monster in the short term, he would deal with the Socket-Monster’s Death Eaters.
Lord Voldemort was now hiding somewhere unknown, not coming out, not showing his face, and not giving him any opportunities.
But Death Eaters were different.
Death Eaters were active outside, causing trouble and creating chaos.
They were much easier to find, easier to catch, and—
Easier to deal with than Lord Voldemort.
Catching one Death Eater was like chopping off one of Lord Voldemort’s hands.
Catching ten Death Eaters was like chopping off both of his hands.
Catching a hundred Death Eaters would leave him with only his head.
So at this point, someone might ask:
Why must you become an Auror to deal with Death Eaters?
Isn’t it better to do it quietly on your own?
Go when you want, catch when you want, kill when you want.
No rules.
No procedures.
None of those annoying processes.
How free.
How simple.
How satisfying.
To that, Lynn could only say:
How good it was to do it legally.
No need to be sneaky.
No need to hide.
No need to cast Obliviate on witnesses to clear their memories after every operation.
Put on an Auror uniform, take an Auror badge, and you could walk down the street in broad daylight to hunt Death Eaters.
In broad daylight—
Hehehe.
Although there were some things that even Aurors weren’t allowed to do.
But...
Would the Ministry of Magic pursue it?
Obviously not.
If a Death Eater died, it was a waste.
No one would pursue it.
No one would investigate.
No one would send you to the Wizengamot court.
Because you were an Auror.
You were "performing official duties."
You were "protecting the safety of the wizarding world."
That was the difference between legal and illegal.
"Then I will submit both of your names to Professor McGonagall, and you two can just wait for the notification to go for the interview."
The two nodded and watched their Head of House leave.
...
In the following days, Lynn didn’t wait for the interview notification from the Ministry of Magic, but instead waited for a notification from Dumbledore.
"Yo, Headmaster, how do you have the time to call me? Have you had enough fun out there?"
Listening to Lynn’s sarcastic voice on the other end of the phone, Dumbledore was left speechless.
He took a deep breath, calmed himself down, and then spoke.
"Mr. Lynn, do you remember what we said before I left school?"
Lynn thought for a moment but couldn’t recall.
"What was it? Headmaster, give me a hint."
Dumbledore’s tired voice came from the other end of the phone.
"You promised me you wouldn’t leave Hogwarts."
Lynn: !!!
How could he have forgotten about that?
His brain spun rapidly, and he quickly thought of how to fool—
No.
Explain.
"Headmaster, I haven’t left Hogwarts."
"Then this internship application..."
Lynn directly interrupted what Dumbledore was about to say.
"Headmaster, I just want to share the worries of the wizarding world."
Dumbledore: "..."
He knew Lynn too well.
To put it bluntly, whenever Lynn stuck his butt up, Dumbledore knew what kind of crap he was trying to pull.
"Aren’t you just wanting to legally take revenge on the Death Eaters?"
Lynn: ???
Did you install a wiretap in my brain?
"No, I just want to share the worries of the wizarding world! Headmaster, looking at your increasingly aged face, I just can’t help but..."
Beep...
The phone was hung up.
Lynn thought Dumbledore must have been moved by his pure heart.
In reality, Dumbledore was simply disgusted, and he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from going back to Hogwarts and snapping Lynn’s fishing rod.
