Chapter 341: Chapter 341
On the second floor of the Ministry of Magic, Lynn followed Scrimgeour to the door of the office at the very end of the corridor.
The door was made of dark wood, and a small copper plaque engraved with the words "Intern Office" was fixed to its surface.
Scrimgeour reached out and pushed the door open.
"This will be your office from now on."
He led Lynn inside.
The room wasn’t large. Standing in the doorway, Lynn could see every corner at a glance.
A desk and chair stood beside the window, while a bookcase stretched from floor to ceiling against the wall. It contained several shelves, each crammed with various items—files, dossiers, registration forms, and a few books that looked extremely old.
Lynn surveyed the office with a thoughtful expression.
He had previously heard Edgar describe the office he had used while working as an ordinary clerk.
It had only been the size of a broom cupboard—and that wasn’t a metaphor. It truly had been no larger than a broom cupboard. Two desks had been squeezed inside, leaving only enough space between them for one person to pass through sideways.
The cabinets had been overflowing with documents, and folders were stacked crookedly everywhere, looking as though they might collapse at any moment. The excess files had to be placed wherever there was room—on desks, chairs, windowsills, and even the floor.
There hadn’t even been a clear place to step. Every time someone entered, they had to carefully climb over the piles of documents as though navigating a maze.
For some unknown reason, the Ministry of Magic refused to use the Undetectable Extension Charm to make its employees’ offices more spacious.
Lynn’s office, however, was different. Although it wasn’t particularly large, in a place like the Ministry of Magic, where some offices barely had enough room for a person to turn around, it could already be considered top-tier.
When Scrimgeour saw Lynn fall silent after entering, he assumed that the boy was dissatisfied. His brows furrowed slightly as he walked over to him.
"What do you think of the place?"
There was a trace of caution in his voice, as though he were afraid Lynn might turn around and leave.
"It’s not bad," Lynn affirmed.
After a slight pause, he couldn’t help asking, "Does every Ministry intern receive a private office?"
Scrimgeour shook his head.
"No, that isn’t the case." His voice lowered slightly. "Bones specifically reserved this office for you when she saw that you had applied for an internship with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement."
Lynn looked at Scrimgeour, and a smile appeared on his face.
It was an extremely sincere smile—so sincere that Scrimgeour expected him to say, "Thank you, Department Head," at any moment.
"Oh, my... How could I possibly accept something like this? It’s far too embarrassing."
Scrimgeour fell silent.
He stared at Lynn’s face, which clearly said, "I truly am embarrassed, but since you insist on giving it to me, I suppose I’ll accept," while ten thousand thoughts battled inside his mind.
Lynn paid no attention to Scrimgeour’s speechlessness.
He walked over to the desk, pulled out the chair, and sat down.
"I suppose this means I’ve officially started working."
Lynn’s expression became serious.
"Do you have any tasks for me, Director? Preferably fieldwork."
"There are no tasks." Scrimgeour waved his hand. "You’re only in your fifth year. You should be focusing on your studies."
When Lynn heard this, he thought, What a wonderful arrangement. I get paid for doing nothing?
He leaned back in his chair.
"Then I shall respectfully decline to refuse."
Scrimgeour: ???
Couldn’t this boy tell that he was only being polite?
"Ahem!"
Scrimgeour coughed, his expression shifting from speechless to official.
Lynn looked up at him.
"What is it, Director?"
"Well... there is still some work that needs to be done."
Scrimgeour walked over to the floor-to-ceiling bookcase, reached up, pulled a large stack of files from the top shelf, and placed them on the desk.
Lynn looked at the stack of files, then at Scrimgeour.
Scrimgeour pointed toward the bookcase, sweeping his finger from the top shelf to the bottom.
"These are all registration forms and dossiers. Your task for the time being is to take inventory of the cursed objects in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement’s storage room. If you discover any problems, remember to report them promptly."
Lynn’s eyes immediately lit up.
After asking where the storage room was located, Lynn grabbed the large stack of registration forms and ran toward it.
Scrimgeour was stunned by Lynn’s enthusiasm for work.
He walked to the office door and shouted after Lynn, who was already approaching the lift.
"There’s no hurry! Take your time! Those objects haven’t been inventoried in at least seven or eight years. This isn’t something you can finish in a single day!"
As soon as those words left his mouth, Lynn ran even faster.
...
To be honest, the Hogwarts students’ visit to the Ministry of Magic was, in a sense, little more than a formality intended to familiarize them with the working environment.
Fudge needed the political achievement of "the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts working together," while the students wanted the experience of being able to say, "I interned at the Ministry of Magic."
Everyone got what they wanted, and everyone was happy.
No one truly expected them to accomplish any real work.
Even so, by evening, everyone still seemed reluctant to leave.
They gathered beside the fountain in the Ministry’s Atrium, standing in groups of two or three and holding souvenirs they had received from the various departments.
Some had quills bearing the Ministry of Magic’s emblem. Others had keychains engraved with department names. A few had received "commemorative envelopes" that contained absolutely nothing but had been packaged in official Ministry envelopes.
Unlike school, everything at the Ministry of Magic seemed fresh and exciting to them.
Even if they hadn’t accomplished anything, they would still be able to brag about the experience once they returned.
"I’ve been to the Ministry of Magic."
"I’ve met Minister Fudge."
"I rode the lift that announces the floors by itself."
Only Cedric and Lynn had actually done any work.
Lynn had spent the entire day in the storage room comparing the records on the registration forms with the cursed objects stored inside.
There were gloves that would corrode your hands if you touched them, mirrors that would blind anyone who looked into them, and pipes that would make their users convulse after taking a single puff...
All of them went into Lynn’s trunk.
Of course, he still had to prevent anyone from discovering what he had done.
Although no one at the Ministry of Magic had conducted an inventory in seven or eight years, what if someone suddenly decided to check the storage room one day?
With this possibility in mind, Lynn had even made a special trip to Diagon Alley to purchase a large stack of identical registration forms.
They were made from the same paper and had the same dimensions, format, and color as the originals.
Lynn studied the handwriting on the original registration forms, omitted the objects he had taken, and copied the remaining entries onto the replacements one by one.
He even thoughtfully cast a spell specifically designed to age antiques upon the forms. The edges of the parchment became yellow and brittle, while the ink grew blurred and faded, making the replacement forms look as though they had been sitting in the storage room for seven or eight years.
Even after doing all that, he had only managed to finish inventorying the objects listed on a single registration form.
The rest would probably keep him occupied for quite some time.
Then there was Cedric.
Mr. Diggory clearly had tremendous faith in his son. In order to train him, he hadn’t allowed Cedric a single moment of leisure throughout the entire day.
Cedric had spent the day sitting in the office of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, facing a mountain of files and reading, writing, and filing them one by one.
In his own words, "I wrote ten reports today and used almost two full rolls of parchment. My hand is about to fall off."
"I never knew the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures had to deal with so many ridiculous cases."
His voice carried the helplessness of someone who had genuinely had his horizons broadened.
"Attaching wings to ordinary horses and selling them as Abraxans, disguising Cornish Pixies and selling them as leprechauns..."
Cedric shook his head and sighed.
"Those people will sell absolutely anything. They’ll try to scam anyone. Do they think the people working at the Ministry of Magic are idiots?"
Lynn looked at him, the corner of his mouth curving upward slightly.
He wanted to say, "The people at the Ministry of Magic really aren’t that clever," but ultimately kept the thought to himself and merely patted Cedric on the shoulder.
"What about Mr. Diggory?" a nearby Ravenclaw asked. "Didn’t he help you?"
Cedric’s expression darkened.
"My dad wasn’t in the office all day."
Translation: His father hadn’t done a lick of work all day. He had dumped everything on Cedric and then spent his time showing off his son to other people.
However, Cedric was indeed extremely capable. Very few people could successfully take over another person’s entire workload on their first day.
Just as everyone was preparing to use the Floo Network to return to Hogwarts, a hurried figure ran past them.
The person moved so quickly that Lynn only caught a glimpse of red hair flashing before his eyes.
Lynn and Cedric exchanged a glance.
"Why do I feel as though that person looked familiar?" Lynn asked.
His voice wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough for everyone nearby to hear.
His gaze followed the red-haired figure until the man turned a corner at the end of the corridor.
"Is he a member of the Weasley family?"
Red hair wasn’t rare in the wizarding world. The Weasleys all had red hair, but they certainly weren’t the only ones.
Cedric nodded expressionlessly.
"That was Percy Weasley."
"Oh," Lynn replied.
"The last time I saw him was at the Quidditch World Cup. Back then, he was still working as Barty Crouch’s assistant."
Lynn withdrew his gaze, took a handful of Floo powder from the small table beside the fireplace, and threw it into the flames.
"Hogwarts."
Whoosh—
When the group returned to Hogwarts, Fred and George happened to be passing through the Great Hall.
Fred was holding an unopened bag of Fizzing Whizzbees, while George carried an Extendable Ear.
The two were chatting as they walked, mischievous smiles plastered across their faces.
When they saw the group emerging from the fireplace, their steps faltered.
Fred’s gaze swept over the crowd before precisely locking onto the exhausted-looking Cedric.
"How was it, future Minister?" Fred called out cheekily. "Are you satisfied with your work today?"
George nodded beside him, his expression filled with curiosity.
Cedric forced a stiff smile.
"Satisfied," he replied through gritted teeth. "Extremely satisfied. I nearly worked myself to death."
"That’s wonderful," Fred said, sounding even more cheerful. "If you work hard enough, perhaps you can become Minister before they work you to death."
George nodded vigorously beside him.
"Yes, yes. Then we’ll be able to strut around the Ministry of Magic however we please."
Faced with the twins’ teasing, Cedric immediately decided to redirect their attention.
"What kind of Minister could I possibly become? If anyone here is going to become Minister, it’ll be Lynn."
He paused, giving the twins plenty of time to react.
"I’m still sharing an office with other people, while he has already moved into a private office."
Fred and George’s gazes shifted from Cedric to Lynn in perfect unison.
"So, future Minister—Lord Lynn." Fred raised his voice, bent forward, and performed an exaggerated bow. "What will be the first decree you issue after becoming Minister?"
George bowed beside him as well.
"We can’t wait to hear your brilliant political vision."
Lynn looked at the two of them, the corners of his mouth curling upward.
"Hmm... Let me think."
"Then I suppose my first act will be to shut down your joke shop. I’ve already thought of the justification: it seriously disrupts the normal studies of Hogwarts students."
"Please don’t do that, Minister~"
