The word stays open in front of my eyes.
[Corrupted Reef Stalker]
The predator vanished among the trunks before Freya could close the Tracker.
Even so, she moves to my left. She keeps Permafrost confined to her legs and arms, saving OXI after everything she’s already spent. My left arm stays pinned against my body by the ice splint, useless, while the feeling of emptiness keeps spreading out from the shoulder.
[OXI: 1,486/2,500]
[OXI Bleeding Active: -4 OXI/s.]
I can’t drink a healing potion; the pain would nearly black me out, the damage is too severe. The problem is no longer just winning.
The longer this fight lasts, the worse it gets.
A click comes from the right.
Kraken leaves before I do.
The sword crosses a cluster of leaves and finds only bark. In the same instant, a distortion passes behind Freya.
"Behind you!"
She spins the scythe.
The Reef Stalker has already pulled back.
The blade cuts empty air.
The creature reappears on a high root, watching the two of us with milky shark eyes. Its skin shifts from blue to the green of the nearby leaves as its hind legs compress.
Freya moves first.
She lays a band of ice under her feet and accelerates along the side, keeping the scythe low until the last instant. The move resembles one of the attacks that nearly landed earlier.
The Stalker waits.
When Freya shifts her weight onto the front leg, it abandons its position before the scythe even rises.
The corrupted membrane opens between the paw and the torso, allowing a short correction in the air. The blade passes a few centimeters below. She changes the arc, but the creature changes with it.
Kraken comes for the point where it should land.
The Reef Stalker doesn’t land.
It hooks a front paw on the trunk, uses its claws to turn its body, and goes back to the tree it came from. Kraken finds only wood.
For a feline body, the movement is surreal.
Freya pulls back near me.
"It’s learning. Looks like it."
"I noticed."
The Stalker isn’t faster.
It’s beginning to understand why we move.
I try to change the pattern.
Pressure Step throws me down the narrow passage. I don’t go straight at the creature. I stop before the usual distance, waiting for it to respond to the acceleration and reveal its next position.
It stops too.
For a second, we stand looking at each other.
I’d broken off the attack to read its reaction.
It had broken off its reaction to read mine. I confirm this isn’t the behavior of a Reef Stalker.
"Wonderful," I mutter.
The Stalker disappears.
The next click comes from above.
Freya raises a tilted wall of ice, swinging her scythe hard, leaving only a gap on the right. It’s the same logic we’ve used before: close enough space to make the dodge predictable.
Nothing happens.
The creature doesn’t take the opening. It advances instead of cornering itself.
A paw appears from under a root behind her.
Freya manages to jump before the claws reach her leg, but the movement puts her in the air. The forked jaw appears just below.
Kraken intercepts.
The sword enters between the two plates of the mouth and turns on its own. The impact knocks the Stalker’s head aside while Freya finishes the jump and lands a few meters ahead. The creature lets out a growl, and blood drips from its jaw.
I call Kraken back.
The weight of my left arm jolts inside the splint as I turn.
The pain comes along with another drop in the reserve.
[OXI: 1,338/2,500]
Freya glances at the shared screen.
"We don’t have time to keep testing."
"I agree."
The Reef Stalker starts to circle.
It no longer needs to disappear completely. It shifts its skin between roots, moss, and ice, using Freya’s own technique to break its silhouette.
She tries a feint.
The scythe starts vertical. Mid-step, Freya turns her hips and turns the strike into a horizontal cut.
The Stalker slips out of range before the change finishes.
She stops.
"It read my body."
"It’s reading weight transfer, OXI, and weapon direction."
"Then how do we land a hit?"
I watch the creature cross the side of a trunk.
The answer is simple.
We have to stop teaching it.
"One strike," I say.
Freya turns her eyes to me.
"One?"
"One full sequence. It can learn after it sees it."
She understands.
"Then there can’t be an after."
I nod.
The reserve keeps leaking.
[OXI: 1,294/2,500]
Memory of Lightwaves would burn an absurd amount on top of that.
But I don’t need to keep it active for long.
I call Eventide to my right hand.
The sword appears wrapped in the pale light of memories. Kraken stays free, floating at my side, the eye on the pommel tracking the Stalker.
Freya sees both weapons.
"What do you need from me?"
"The full Pegasus Wrath."
"If I use everything and it corrects—"
"You don’t correct. Forget it."
She frowns.
"If I leave the line, I miss."
"It won’t leave."
The Reef Stalker changes trees.
"How do you know?"
I look at Kraken.
"Because I’m going to choose where it can go."
Freya goes quiet.
The last time I told her to obey without understanding, she hesitated and I ended up with a dead arm.
This time, there’s no argument.
She only sets her feet.
"All right."
The wet click runs through the woods again.
I close my eyes for a moment.
"Memory of Lightwaves."
When I open them, golden light crosses my vision.
A thin smoke escapes the corners of my eyes and dissolves into the air. Voices, movements, and memories that never belonged to me arrive at the same time.
A swordsman facing a creature that corrected leaps in the air.
A huntress waiting for an enemy to choose the one route that looked open.
An older man watching an opponent’s hips instead of the weapon.
No ready answers.
Only fragments.
I use all of them.
[OXI: 1,221/2,500]
[OXI: 1,147/2,500]
[OXI Bleeding Active.]
The world goes slower inside my head.
Ahead, the Reef Stalker has five useful routes.
Two require the membranes.
One passes through the tree on the left.
Another uses the ground.
The last depends on a vertical leap.
I look at Freya.
She draws a deep breath.
"Permafrost!"
The cold falls over the forest.
Ice crosses the pools, climbs the roots, and takes the trunks in ragged plates. Leaves go stiff. The moisture in the air condenses and drops in small crystals around us.
Freya doesn’t try to freeze the Stalker.
She covers the terrain.
Three routes vanish.
She leaves one open.
The Reef Stalker sees it.
Its skin turns white and blue, copying the new forest, and its body starts moving exactly where I want it.
Kraken advances on the left.
The predator knows Kraken.
It’s already learned that the autonomous sword often exists to close one route while I attack from the other.
So it does what I expect.
It ignores part of the threat and looks at me.
I use Pressure Step.
Eventide comes from low to high.
The Stalker recognizes the movement and leaps.
I’d already seen that response.
It knows I know it.
The difference is that this time it doesn’t matter.
The dark membrane opens to correct the leap.
For an instant, I think about following the body with Eventide.
I drop the idea.
Kraken takes the movement.
The Other Current.
The sword changes direction mid-advance and cuts the extended membrane.
The Reef Stalker tries to correct.
Nothing happens.
Its body stays locked in the trajectory it already chose.
"Now!"
Freya opens her wings.
The ice bursts backward into two wide structures, compressed against her body.
"Pegasus Wrath."
The first beat tears leaves from the trees.
The second lifts Freya off the ground.
She doesn’t turn, doesn’t correct, doesn’t try to follow the Stalker.
One line.
Exactly as she promised.
The predator notices too late.
It tries to lower its head and shield the base of its neck with the dark plate it grew during the corruption.
I’m still in the way.
Pressure Step again.
My vision shakes with the drop in OXI. My left arm tries to swing away from my body inside the splint, bringing a wave of pain I cross without slowing my stride.
Eventide finds the edge of the plate.
One arm is enough.
I turn the sword and use the Stalker’s own movement to lift the guard.
Kraken goes in from the other side.
The two blades open the gap a few centimeters.
Freya arrives.
The scythe stays hidden behind her body until the last instant. When it appears, the full weight of Pegasus Wrath is already loaded into the swing.
The blade crosses the gap.
The impact blows the ice out from under our feet.
A white line runs the length of the whole forest. Trees lean with the shift of air, and the water in the pools is pushed away in rings.
Freya passes the Stalker and only touches the ground several meters later.
The predator stays standing.
The camouflage tries to change.
Green.
Blue.
White.
Black.
The colors run over the body without finding a surface to copy.
The paws give out.
The Reef Stalker drops among the frozen roots.
For a few seconds, all I hear is my own breathing.
Then Ocean’s Law appears.
[Corrupted Reef Stalker defeated.]
[Combat Contribution Recognized.]
[Experience acquired: 1.7%.]
[Scales acquired: 92.]
[Rank D — Experience: 99.8% → 100.0%.]
My bar stops.
A second screen covers the first.
[Experience Requirement Satisfied.][First Rank Barrier Reached.]
Memory of Lightwaves fades.
Eventide nearly slips from my fingers.
The OXI keeps falling.
[OXI: 534/2,500]
[OXI Bleeding Active: -4 OXI/s.]
[OXI: 530/2,500]
Freya lets part of the wings dissolve and runs to me.
"Dryden."
"I’m fine."
"You’re leaking OXI."
"I know."
[OXI: 526/2,500]
The next message appears.
[Evolution Available.]
I don’t have to think.
"Accept."
The world goes quiet.
The first thing I feel is the OXI stopping its escape.
The energy spread through my body changes direction and starts flowing back inside. The cold leaves my left arm. Then warmth comes, first in the shoulder, then down through the elbow to the fingers.
This evolution is different from the ones before.
Rising through the lesser Ranks raised how much the body could hold. The first barrier changes the way the OXI circulates. The channels widen, the energy compresses better, and muscles, organs, and the Diver Mark start to sustain a pressure a Rank D simply couldn’t hold.
That’s why progression accelerates after C.
If someone survives.
The next real wall waits at Rank A.
The pressure inside me rises.
Freya steps back.
"Dryden..."
The energy reaches its limit.
The forest explodes in light.
A blue-gold column climbs from my body, passes through the canopy, and keeps going toward the ocean sky. Leaves are torn from the branches. The pools open around my feet, and cracks run through Freya’s ice.
The light keeps rising until it disappears above the trees.
My left arm moves.
First the fingers.
Then the wrist.
I close the hand.
A new screen appears.
[Chaos Theory — Targeted by the Riptide]
[Blessing Triggered.]
[Blessing Amplification: +25%.]
[Rank Evolution Restoration Enhanced.]
The feeling of rupture in the shoulder disappears.
[OXI Bleeding removed.]
[Critical Limb Trauma removed.]
I let out the breath I’d been holding.
The column of energy starts to shrink, leaving bands of light between the treetops.
Then comes the message I’ve been waiting for since Rahul handed me those three percent.
[CONGRATULATIONS. YOU HAVE EVOLVED TO RANK-C]
Name: Dryden Sands Rank: C (Reef) — ★★★★☆☆

Spirit: C (1★) [Horizon Set]
Wisdom: B (3★) [Retained from Memory]
[Reward: 5 Shards.]
Five thousand.
Double the reserve.
I move my left arm again. The Horizon is still marked by the attack, but the body beneath it has gone back to answering.
Freya is looking at my hand.
"It was hanging useless a few minutes ago."
"Evolutions stabilize the body."
"That was more than stabilizing."
She’s right.
I look at the Chaos Theory line still fading from the HUD.
The curse had put that Stalker in our path.
The blessing had just given me back what it took.
Ocean’s Law still isn’t finished.
One last notification appears over the corpse.
[Loot Available.]
*PING!*
[Blessing Triggered.]
I go over to the Reef Stalker and open the window.
[Reef Stalker Chromatophore Tissue — Rank C]
[Corrupted Membrane Fragment — Rank C]
[Scales acquired: 92.]
Then a different line shines below the others.
[Extremely Rare Drop detected.]
[Veilfang]
[Rank: C — Reef]
[Type: Relic Dagger]
[Rarity: Extremely Rare]
[Passive — Chromatic Veil]
[While the wielder stays still or suppresses their OXI signature, Veilfang and the hand holding it gradually take on the surrounding colors.]
The dagger appears in my hand.
It’s short, with a dark blade that changes tone when tilted. The metal reproduces the blue of the ice, then the brown of the roots under my feet.
Freya comes closer.
She looks at the weapon.
Then at me.
I show her a split-screen view as I hold Veilfang out by the hilt.
"Yours."
She doesn’t take it right away.
"That’s extremely rare."
"I know."
"A relic of Rank C."
"I know that too."
"You just reached Rank C."
"And I got five thousand OXI, five Shards, and a new arm. I’m satisfied."
Freya doesn’t smile.
She keeps looking at the arm I put between her and the first attack.
"You lost that arm because I didn’t get down."
"It came back."
She finally takes Veilfang.
"I know what happened before it did."
I don’t answer.
The forest around us is still frozen, torn apart by Pincers and marked by the fight against something that shouldn’t exist in that state.
Freya closes her hand around the new dagger.
I open the sheet again.
Rank C — Reef.
The first barrier has fallen.
And for the first time since I came back, my body is starting to catch up to the memories it carries.
