"How is that possible...? I have people check them regularly."
The manager’s eyes were filled with utter confusion.
If he had never scheduled inspections, he wouldn’t have been this surprised to find a camera in one of the hotel rooms.
After all, a whole black market industry had formed around this sort of thing, and the huge profits attracted a lot of people.
But they regularly inspected their own rooms. Why were they still finding them?
What’s more, it was in two consecutive rooms.
’Is it a coincidence that only these two rooms have cameras, or...’
The mere thought made him shudder.
He didn’t dare to think about the implications.
"What other rooms on this floor are vacant?"
A flicker of anticipation appeared in Feng Yu’s eyes. She had a feeling this case wasn’t so simple.
She suspected it wasn’t just a matter of one or two rooms.
"Let me see..."
The manager shot Chen Mo an embarrassed glance before looking down at his phone.
Just moments ago, he’d suspected Chen Mo himself had planted the camera to try and blackmail them.
He had even sworn up and down that the privacy and security in their hotel rooms were absolutely airtight.
Now, he had egg all over his face.
"These rooms are vacant."
The manager said, checking the information on his phone.
"Check them, one by one."
Chen Mo then accompanied Feng Yu and the manager to check every one of the vacant rooms.
And... jackpot.
Not a single one was clean.
Every room had a hidden camera, and they were all installed in the exact same spot.
The manager was completely numb by the time they were done.
"Who the hell did this!"
He was seeing red. If Chen Mo and Feng Yu hadn’t been there, he would have started screaming profanities.
He had just been insisting that the hotel conducted regular inspections and would absolutely never have hidden cameras.
And now, it turned out that "absolutely never have cameras" actually meant—
—absolutely no room would be *without* a camera.
It was a sick joke.
"Considering that a camera was installed in every room, I strongly suspect it was an inside job by one of your hotel employees."
Feng Yu offered her initial assessment after a moment of thought.
"If an outsider had installed them, they would have needed to stay a night in every single room."
"This is a five-star hotel; a single night’s stay isn’t cheap."
"If they really stayed in every room, the cost of the rooms alone would be a substantial sum."
"The cost, both in money and time, would be too high. It’s just not realistic."
"Besides, the manager said they conduct regular inspections, so it should have been impossible for the cameras to go undiscovered."
"And yet, every room they spot-checked had a camera."
"That leaves only one possibility: a hotel employee installed them."
"Using a master keycard, they could get in and out of every guest room with ease."
"It wouldn’t take long, and they wouldn’t have to pay for all those rooms."
"Plus, they could fake their way through the inspections."
Chen Mo nodded in agreement upon hearing Feng Yu’s assessment.
The main reason was that it would be too much of a hassle for an outsider.
If cameras were only found in a few random rooms, it might still be possible it was an outsider.
But with cameras in this whole block of rooms, it was almost certainly an inside job.
Otherwise, the person would have had to practically live at this five-star hotel.
They’d have to be here every day, and switch to a new room each time.
That was just too unrealistic.
"An inside job?"
Hearing this, the manager was taken aback. If it really was an inside job, that made things even worse.
But after a moment’s thought, he had to admit Feng Yu’s analysis made sense.
It would be difficult for an outsider to place cameras in the exact same spot in every room.
And it would be hard for them to evade the hotel’s own inspections.
"I think I know who it is!"
An image of a person surfaced in the manager’s mind. His expression turned grim as he spoke through clenched teeth.
"Who?"
Feng Yu’s eyes lit up.
Finding the person who installed the cameras this quickly was definitely a good thing.
Once they had the culprit, they could investigate other things through him.
Things like the sale of illegal equipment or the distribution of the recorded content.
They might even be able to trace it back to the black market operation behind it all.
’Wouldn’t that be a nice step up the career ladder?’
"Our hotel’s technician, Cai Zhifeng. I’m the one who put him in charge of checking for cameras. He has a master keycard that lets him into any room."
The manager’s head had cleared a bit by now, and he quickly explained the man’s situation.
"Is he in the hotel?"
"He is."
"Let’s go get him!"
With the manager’s cooperation, Feng Yu apprehended the suspect without any trouble.
Besides, the man didn’t have the strongest nerves.
At first, he denied everything when Feng Yu questioned him.
But as soon as Feng Yu mentioned checking his fingerprints and transaction records, he immediately broke.
According to his confession, he had indeed been conducting the regular inspections as the manager requested.
He rarely found any cameras, and on the off chance he did, he removed them immediately.
Then, someone approached him with a proposal for cooperation.
The other party would provide the equipment, and he would be responsible for installing it.
He also had to just go through the motions during inspections to make sure the equipment wasn’t discovered.
In return, he would receive 30% of all profits generated by the cameras he installed.
At first, he thought the percentage was too low.
But the other party told him that since this was a five-star hotel, the guests were all relatively well-off.
The "quality" of their female companions was generally higher, which meant the "content" would sell for a higher price.
So even though the cut was only 30%, the actual earnings would be nothing to sneeze at.
And so, he was tempted.
Using his insider access, he went from room to room, swiping his card and installing the high-grade, concealable cameras the other party provided.
And during every subsequent inspection, he simply ignored those same cameras.
It had been half a month since he’d finished installing them all.
