Chapter 113

Don’t Interfere

"Medik, calm down. Your student is safe now," Lucien tried to soothe the beautiful professor’s emotions, but Medik shook his head.

"What do you understand? Even now, you’ve driven away your only disciple. I only have one student and don’t have the opportunity to take on students all the time like you. If she died, how would I live? Live like before with no one to talk to? If she died, I would feel terrible."

"I understand."

"How could you understand!? Your disciple didn’t die; it was you who severed ties with her! But I still have my student. Even though she’s not very strong, even though she might seem a bit foolish, even though she..."

"Medik, I think you should stop with the details," Lucien quickly intervened before Medik could say anything stranger.

"But..."

"Trust me," Lucien, who had become an esteemed professor in Ellie’s eyes, insisted once more. Finally, he used his powers to silence Medik’s harsh words. Ellie felt she should learn more from Lucien in the future, in case she needed to use his techniques when alone with Medik.

"Sigh, in that case, you should go rest quickly. Why don’t you go back? I was worried you might cross paths with me, so I waited at the Botanical Building for a long time. You still haven’t rushed back to safety. What are you doing sitting around here? If I hadn’t heard from others that you hadn’t come out yet, I would still be waiting anxiously," Medik relented, no longer speaking ominously. He lightly scolded the girl out of concern, giving Ellie the chance to explain.

"Professor, actually, I’m worried about what might happen in the arena. Many students are in danger right now. I’m afraid..."

"What are you afraid of? There are many professors around here already, aren’t there?"

"Yes, but they still haven’t been able to break Professor Nico’s stratagem."

"Hmm?" Lucien glanced around, assessing the situation briefly. His indifferent gaze reminded Ellie of how powerful this professor was, and perhaps...

Perhaps the reason the beast attack during the competing arena in the heroine’s first year wasn’t mentioned in the novel, making it seem like the competition went smoothly, was because of this Sage professor?

If someone claimed how strong Professor Nico’s stratagem was, they would have to stop talking when Professor Lucien appeared. This professor was known for breaking rules and showing others up. Tasks others struggled with, he could accomplish with a flick of his finger—if he felt like it...

In the novel, the heroine was his disciple, so it wasn’t surprising that Professor Lucien came to watch this competition. The moment an abnormal level 1 beast appeared, Professor Lucien probably flicked his finger and dealt with the beast instantly, regardless of how proud Professor Nico was of his anti-interference stratagem...

"How can those professors even call themselves professors?" Lucien shook his head, his gaze filled with disdain. However, while speaking, the skilled young professor snapped his fingers, just once indeed. Light power surged from his fingertips and shot into the arena. The level 1 beast that was attacking students suddenly exploded!

Boom!!

"Is that..." Professor Maxim’s eyes wavered slightly as she witnessed the stratagem being breached first-handedly. She looked at Professor Lucien, whom she had always heard was skilled but had never seen in action. Today, it was clear—this professor was...dangerous!

While many professors were doing their utmost to help the students in the arena, no one expected the level 1 star beast to explode so easily. Fortunately, some professors noticed the small burst of light that had just dissipated, revealing who had come to the students’ aid.

"It was Professor Lucien."

"The Sage took action."

"Sigh, with Professor Lucien’s help, there shouldn’t be any more problems."

"He didn’t even break the stratagem; he just sent in power to blow up the intruder. If Professor Nico saw this, he might be heartbroken."

"Haha, our institution will be great as long as we have enthusiastic young professors like him," many professors praised, no feeling of losing face in the slightest. Everyone knew that Professor Lucien’s power was akin to that of a god, someone even the Church desired.

Ellie recalled the scene where the heroine entered her room. That woman used power just like her professor. It must have been Professor Lucien who taught her how to bypass the stratagem’s power. Rooms were like stratagems, well-protected, but the flaw was that light elemental power could easily penetrate if one knew how!

"Is this enough?" Lucien raised his eyebrows at Ellie, asking as if he hadn’t done anything significant, which was truly like that. In his mind, he simply wanted the girl to follow her professor back to the Botanical Building. If not for Medik’s anxiousness and unease, would he have wasted his magic power so readily?

It should be noted that he had duties as a professor, completing the institution’s tasks, and also special missions from the palace that the institute had volunteered to receive. Like Medik, he had little free time. So, organizing events and ensuring the institution’s safety weren’t his responsibilities. When he worked hard, no one helped. So why should he lend a hand now?

Others were professors like him, had their own duties but failed to perform them. If that’s the case, why should they earn the same monthly salary as him and Medik?

It seemed that Lucien did not prioritize the public interest, and he readily admitted to having this attitude. Even when he refused to take on direct disciples, it caused problems. Many elders approached him, asking him to accept students to pass on his exceptional skills. However, in the end, they had to give up. Lucien never claimed he wanted to be a professor; it was they who insisted he stay. Otherwise...by now, he might have been walking around hunting beasts, making a considerable income with a thousand times less effort!

"Professor, although the arena is safe, there’s still the matter of the criminal who tried to assassinate the young lady from the Fernal family. I’ve used my power to track them. What should we do about this?"

"It’s alright. Leave that to me. The arena issue has been resolved, so I’ll handle the rest," Maxim, who had been silent all along, intended for the girl to quickly follow her professor back and not talk much. Who would have thought Ellie would bring up the criminals again!

The opportunity to kill this girl vanished with the arrival of Medik and Lucien. Even if Medik had come alone, killing a student in front of him wouldn’t have been easy. And dealing with Medik himself? The young professor might seem weak, but in reality, he was far from it.

There was a saying that Professor Medik had a highly diverse fighting style. The plants in his bond held many secrets, and certainly, no one wanted to fight someone who had never revealed his trump cards.

Moreover, with Lucien by his side, just the thought of making a move would probably result in one’s body being blown to pieces! Therefore, how could Maxim dare to silence the girl?

She had no choice but to volunteer to handle the matter herself. After all, there wasn’t anything else to do, right? The girl wouldn’t bother or stop her again. However...Maxim underestimated Ellie too much.

"It would be better if Professor Lucien helps, don’t you think? If Professor Lucien assists, we will surely catch the “mastermind.” His methods are very ingenious. Can we do that, Professor?" Ellie completely ignored Maxim and gave Lucien a knowing look.

Although he felt slightly annoyed, after seeing the girl’s owner—No! The girl’s professor—looked at him with sincere eyes, like his student, Lucien, who could refuse even the director, found himself unable to reject this request.

"You want me to catch someone for interrogation?"

"Yes. The criminals have fled not far from here. They are still in Erel City. If we go now..."

"Scholarship student, why are you giving Professor Lucien more work? Can’t you see he’s already very busy? Let me handle it," Professor Maxim interjected, her behavior becoming suspicious even to Professor Medik, who was not very social.

"It’s alright, Professor. There are many students in the arena, and some are seriously injured. If you stay here, you can help them a lot. Besides, Professor Lucien works quickly. He will return soon."

"Student! This is my duty. I am responsible for the safety of today’s competition. If I let another professor handle it, wouldn’t that mean I can’t fulfill my duties? Do you want to ruin my reputation? Hmph...Talking to a child is pointless, but I trust that Professor Medik and Professor Lucien understand. Interfering with someone else’s duties is inappropriate."

Professor Maxim spoke sharply. No matter what, she couldn’t let the criminals fall into the hands of other professors. Who knew how harshly they would interrogate the hired criminals who had betrayed her? If those criminals faced death, wouldn’t they be more willing to confess?

Maxim immediately understood what the outcome would be, and the one who would suffer would be herself!

"Interfering with duties?" Lucien narrowed his eyes slightly. Professor Maxim’s words were harsh, accusing him of overstepping his bounds. If that was the case, why didn’t she handle her responsibilities properly, letting many students die and many more get injured? Could that be called good duty performance?

Initially, Lucien didn’t want to get involved, but seeing Professor Maxim’s behavior, still unaware of her standing, he couldn’t help but speak up.

"Professor Maxim, your words are too severe. With your skills...if you go after the criminals, I fear there will be a fight, and you don’t have the capability to capture them alive."

Lucien bluntly revealed her true intentions, causing Maxim to step back in shock.

"Pr-Professor Lucien, are you insulting me?"

"In that case...Professor, would you make a pact with me that you will return with the criminals alive?"

"A-A pact?"

"Yes. If you fail to capture them, just return empty-handed. The only exception is killing. If you kill the criminals, then the penalty will be your own death...how about that?"

"Professor Lucien! That’s too much! Not only do you distrust my abilities, but you also threaten to punish me? Hmph! If that’s the case, I declare that from now on, I will no longer work with you. I will resign from my position here! And it’s all because of you!!"

Maxim shouted in anger, her face flushed red, veins bulging, and even her eyes turned a terrifying shade of red.

However, Lucien was not afraid of this threat at all. If other professors heard such a threat, they might fear the punishment from the director for causing another professor to suddenly resign due to an unwillingness to cooperate. How could such a professor not be punished by the director?Of course, this was not the case with Lucien, a powerful mage. Even if no other professors were left, as long as he remained...the institute would still sacrifice much for!
