Su Yaoguang leaned closer to Zhou Wangshu.
Zhou Wangshu, seeing her enlarged pretty face, felt guilty and dodged her scrutiny: "What are you doing?"
"Why does your complexion look so pale?" Su Yaoguang touched his forehead, "Did you feel unwell anywhere while I was away?"
"No."
"No, something’s off with you," Su Yaoguang said, "I’ll go find Jing’er to come and examine you."
Zhou Wangshu grabbed her, and because of his excessive strength, she stumbled forward.
Su Yaoguang held Zhou Wangshu tightly, their eyes meeting, then parted as if scalded.
"I’m just hungry. You’ve been away for so long, do you know how empty my stomach has been?" Zhou Wangshu said stiffly.
"Well, you’re in luck. I brought meals and pastries made by Chunni, all your favorites." Su Yaoguang said without suspicion.
He wasn’t feverish and showed no other symptoms, so he was most likely just very hungry.
"Su Yaoguang, don’t you know that I am your..." Xiao Yanci broke his composure, impulsively almost revealing too much about their past life’s relationship as he saw the two being affectionate right in front of him.
Xiao Yanci certainly doesn’t like Su Yaoguang. Yet, despite the dislike, she was once his woman. He might not want her, but seeing her flirt with another man felt like being cuckolded, leaving him quite upset.
Su Yaoguang had already guessed that Xiao Yanci had regained his past life’s memories. Before, when he hadn’t, she didn’t bother with him. Now that he did, things were a bit more intriguing.
Would he dare shout it aloud?
No, he wouldn’t.
If he said something inappropriate, he would be seen as a madman, maybe even thought to be possessed. Does he still want his career?
"Let’s go." Su Yaoguang led Zhou Wangshu inside.
The Mountain Master and teacher, witnessing the situation, had to take the academy’s safety issues seriously.
"The young miss from Zhou Wangshu’s family is right. As long as we pay handsomely, surely someone can take on this heavy responsibility." Mr. Wang said, "Let’s hire some skilled hands to guard the house!"
Su Yaoguang and Zhou Wangshu were eating the meals made by Jia Chunni, and after dining, sipping tea while each reading their book. Zhou Wangshu’s was academic; hers was entertainment—neither interfering with the other.
"Ha-ha..." Su Yaoguang laughed heartily as she read her storybook.
Zhou Wangshu lifted his eyes to look over; Su Yaoguang was sprawled rather ungracefully on the soft couch, engrossed in her book.
He walked over, moved the candle next to her, and adjusted the wick slightly.
Su Yaoguang noticed the brighter light, turned around, and saw Zhou Wangshu silently doing all this.
At this moment, a melodious flute sound came from not far away.
Su Yaoguang: "..."
In her past life, Su Yaoguang loved to hear Xiao Yanci play the flute, always feeling his playing had an unspeakable charm and mystery.
Xiao Yanci clearly knew this, sometimes when she was upset, he’d play the flute, and she’d soften immediately.
What play is he acting out now?
"Does it sound good?" Zhou Wangshu saw her looking outside with a strange expression.
Su Yaoguang turned back: "Not good."
"I saw you listening quite intently; you didn’t even hear me call you."
"What did you say?" Su Yaoguang looked at him.
"I meant to say..." Zhou Wangshu leaned close to Su Yaoguang, whispering in her ear, "It’s late, you should rest."
Su Yaoguang: "..."
Why did such a normal sentence need to be said so closely? Saying it like that, with such a strange tone, really stirred one’s imagination.
Was he doing it on purpose?
No, he’s still a child; he can’t have that many tricks up his sleeve, right?
"Wangshu, you’re quite familiar with Chen Buyu, aren’t you?" Su Yaoguang asked.
"Sort of, yes. You are looking for him?" Zhou Wangshu laid back on the bed.
These days Su Yaoguang slept on the soft couch; Zhou Wangshu was on the bed, since he was the patient.
"I want to inquire about Young Master Zizhan." Su Yaoguang said, "Young Master Zizhan plays music at their dance house, they probably interact with him often, and might know where Young Master Zizhan lives, right?"
"Why do you ask?" Zhou Wangshu lay with his back turned, expression complicated.
"He shielded me today and got injured. I want to know how he’s doing." Su Yaoguang fretted, "He bled, and I don’t know how deep the wound is. Such an easily embarrassed young man—if he gets a scar, will he blame me?"
"How do you know he’s a young man and not an old chap?"
"I haven’t seen his face, but I’ve seen his eyes. Those bright eyes couldn’t belong to an old man. Besides, do I look easily fooled to you?"
Zhou Wangshu: "...You’re the smartest."
If she keeps being this smart, she might end up getting tricked out of everything.
"I’ll ask Chen Buyu tomorrow." Su Yaoguang said.
The flute continued to disturb their sleep; before they could act, other scholars were already impatient.
"Playing and playing, one might think there’s a funeral happening at the academy. Could it be less ominous?"
Xiao Yanci angrily put down his jade flute.
Why is everything different this lifetime?
Zhou Wangshu’s existence feels misplaced, for it seems due to this change, everything else has altered.
In the middle of the night, Xiao Yanci started burning up again.
"Yaoguang...save me..."
At this moment, he realized all too well that if anyone truly cared deeply, it would be Su Yaoguang.
But this lifetime, she’s been taken by Zhou Wangshu.
If Zhou Wangshu vanished, would she revert to focusing entirely on him like before?
The next day, someone came from the government office to administer medicine.
Eventually, the government office approved Jiang Jing’s prescription and decided to distribute medicine throughout the city. However, this meant a shortage of herbs. The government requested all major pharmacies to provide supplies, promising a commendation ceremony and three years of tax exemption for these disaster relief efforts afterward.
The academy hired strong bodyguards to maintain order, and also selected clean and honest-looking refugees to tend to the sick scholars.
Zhou Wangshu sat by the window, seeing Xiao Yanci outside being supported by a young woman, scoffing lightly before returning his focus to his book.
"Wangshu, look at what goodies I’ve made." Su Yaoguang came in, carrying pastries. "I’ve been busy all morning!"
"I thought you went home." Zhou Wangshu hadn’t seen her and thought she returned to Taoyao Square.
"Taoyao Square has my mother and others watching over it, so I don’t need to oversee everything. My current task is to take care of you, keeping you happy and healthy. Look, after so long on medicine, your mouth must be bitter. These pastries are made to suit your tastes." Su Yaoguang handed a pastry to Zhou Wangshu’s mouth. "How is it?"
"Mm, delicious." Zhou Wangshu ate two pieces. "Now you can bring up any requests you have."
