Zhou Wangshu had a dream.
In the dream, he returned to the moment when he was sold, but Su Yaoguang didn’t buy him; instead, she bought Xiao Yanci.
He still lay in the carriage, but he was on the brink of death, exactly like before. The dream was so real that he even felt that overwhelming pain.
After Qian Yazi sold Xiao Yanci, he took the other slaves to a brothel to sell. The madam of the brothel was not satisfied with those slaves, saying they weren’t good-looking. Qian Yazi said there was a good-looking one in the carriage, but he was severely injured and must be treated with good medicine to have a chance of survival. The madam lifted the curtain of the carriage to look at him and immediately spent two taels of silver to buy him after seeing his face.
The madam indeed spent a fortune to treat his injuries, and she healed him. But as soon as he recovered, she sold him at a high price to a perverted lord. He stabbed that lord and escaped, almost making it out of the dark alley, but was caught by the brothel’s thugs and brought back. At the last moment, he saw Su Yaoguang; her eyes were full of sympathy and concern as she looked at him. In the end, he ended his short life by choosing death to free himself.
After he died, he didn’t disappear immediately. His soul returned to Anning Village, lingering by Su Yaoguang’s side. He didn’t understand why he stayed with the village girl, perhaps because her final glance made him feel the only warmth in the world. He stayed by her side, watching her toil tirelessly for that self-righteous man, trying to please him, serve him, and humbly act pitiful.
However, that man did achieve success and became a Champion Scholar. When he saw him marrying her as promised, making her the Champion Scholar’s wife, he thought that foolish woman finally had her hard times pay off. Looking at it like this, her efforts over the years hadn’t gone to waste. Yet, she was not happy as the Champion Scholar’s wife. Xiao Yanci despised her, never shared a room with her, and even the servants in the mansion looked down on this wife of commoner origins. He watched her endure like a pushover, his soul almost materializing from anger.
Zhou Wangshu could only follow Su Yaoguang and couldn’t see what was happening with Xiao Yanci. It wasn’t until Su Yaoguang died on the sickbed that he, from her perspective, saw Xiao Yanci and Jiang Yihuan, those two scoundrels, and their child who clearly needed discipline.
Su Yaoguang died, and Zhou Wangshu’s soul was about to vanish. As he disappeared, he looked at the foolish woman lying there, thinking: if only she had bought him instead.
Perhaps he wouldn’t have loved her, but at least he wouldn’t have hurt her.
This foolish woman, so naive, only heartless people would treat her this way!
Zhou Wangshu sat up with a start, cold sweat streaming down his forehead. He looked at the sky outside the window; it was just breaking dawn, and there were sounds next door, and he knew without thinking who got up first.
This dream...
Why would he have such an absurd dream?
He looked at the Buddha statue beside him, which seemed so compassionate, as if pitying the people of the world.
Xiao Yanci always told Su Yaoguang inexplicable things; could it be related to the events in the dream? If he could have such an absurd dream, could Xiao Yanci also dream of these things?
Is it because of being in the temple that he has developed some special abilities?
During the meal, Zhou Wangshu was in a daze.
Su Yaoguang touched his forehead.
Zhou Wangshu was startled, looking at the youthful and delicate face in front of him, even more so than in the dream.
"Are you too tired?" Su Yaoguang asked, "If you’re tired, just rest. After all, there are many monks in the temple, and they don’t miss you. You’ve just recovered from a serious illness, and your body hasn’t fully healed yet!"
"Yaoguang..." Zhou Wangshu looked at her, "Why didn’t you buy Xiao Ci back then?"
Su Yaoguang: "...Does this matter to you very much? Why does everyone think I should have bought him? You’re better looking and cheaper, so why would I waste silver to buy him?"
Zhou Wangshu lowered his eyes, "If you hadn’t bought me, what would have happened to me?"
"Ah, are you complaining that I bought you? Have you suffered from following me, regretting it? But unfortunately, even if you regret it, it’s no use. You should have ended up in my hands." Su Yaoguang pinched his cheek, "It’s so easy to pinch."
"Yaoguang, although Wangshu is a live-in son-in-law, you should still give him some face in front of others, how can you pinch his face like teasing a child?" Zhang Zhaodi said irritably.
Su Yaoguang let go of his face, putting a piece of tofu from the bowl onto his plate, "In the afternoon, let’s go to the back mountain to eat meat, just have something simple in the morning."
A young monk came over and said to Su Yaoguang and the others, "The benefactor Xiao lay outside all night yesterday and has a fever today. Doctor Jiang, please go and have a look!"
"We’ll go over after breakfast," Su Yaoguang said, "Young Master Monk, don’t worry, he’s physically strong and will be fine."
If it were someone else, Su Yaoguang would have taken Jiang Jing over there a long time ago. But this was Xiao Yanci, so there was no need to hurry; after all, he had a big life, wouldn’t die.
Zhou Wangshu said, "I’ll go take a look later. He’s a man, it’s inconvenient for you ladies to take care of him. Besides, didn’t Mr. Wang entrust him to me? Of course, I should go look after him."
"If he starts acting crazy, just ignore him, arrange a young monk to keep an eye on him," Su Yaoguang said.
"Alright."
Su Yaoguang was very busy and soon put Xiao Yanci, that reckless scoundrel, out of her mind. Jiang Ziqian, the boss of Jiang’s Restaurant, delivered a large amount of supplies and mentioned that there were no new patients in the city, suggesting that the illness was under control.
"Here, we have good control. According to the news from the people I dispatched to find out, thousands have died in the neighboring city," Jiang Ziqian said. "It’s said that many people want to sneak into our place. Now Lord County Magistrate is very worried, as it would be inconsiderate to neglect these people in terms of life. However, once they sneak in here, it would affect our locals."
"Life is precious; they want to survive, it’s only human nature. We can arrange guards at all entrances and exits, and if outsiders are found sneaking in, just send them to the temple to be managed."
"But this will make your place very busy."
"We do this to save more lives, don’t we? It’s not for nothing that we spend money and effort; if one more person survives, it means saving another family."
"Amitabha." The Abbot, having listened for some time, clearly heard everything worth hearing. "Doing good and accumulating virtue will bring blessings to you, and you shall be protected by Buddha."
"Yaoguang, Wangshu got scalded with a pot of hot soup spilled by that Xiao, go take a look." Zhang Yingdi ran over, anxiously said.
