The people from Taoyao Square were eating melon seeds and watching the drama at the entrance of Fenghua Pavilion.
Zhong Lanhua saw a crowd gathered at the entrance, holding a feather duster as she came to disperse them. After driving everyone in the shop out and closing the door, the outside view was completely cut off.
Xiao Yanci immediately noticed Su Yaoguang whispering with Zhou Wangshu. The look in Su Yaoguang’s eyes was full of disdain and sarcasm, no longer the gentle, affectionate gaze of the past life.
At that moment, Xiao Yanci felt a bit of regret.
In the past life, following Su Yaoguang, there weren’t so many troublesome matters. Even though the Su Family’s conditions were a bit lacking, they never deprived him of food or clothing, giving him the best. But now, it seemed like nothing was going right.
When Jiang Yihuan was crying in his arms like a pear blossom in the rain, Xiao Yanci secretly cursed himself for being unworthy. Jiang Yihuan relied on him wholeheartedly, just like in the past life, and yet he hesitated for a moment. Furthermore, in the past life, they even had such a lovely child. His greatest regret was not being able to openly acknowledge himself as the child’s father, causing the child to be insulted as a bastard while growing up. Now he could marry Jiang Yihuan; they would be a legitimate couple, and their future children would not have to suffer such grievances.
"You saved me, and I am very grateful, but it’s impossible for me to marry you," Xiao Yanci said. "You can all see that Huan’er and I are the true pair."
"I’ve held you, touched you, you’re mine now," Li Shengnan said fiercely. "And as for this woman, I heard she was groped by a dozen men."
"It’s not true, I didn’t," Jiang Yihuan cried. "These are all just rumors."
"Miss Li, you are both women, why do you make things difficult for her?" Xiao Yanci said angrily. "Huan’er and I met by the river, and there were too many people yesterday, someone pushed us, causing us to fall into the water. You saved me, and I am very grateful. How about this, how much silver would it take to repay this favor? I’ll give you the silver, and let’s consider it repayment for your kindness."
The three brothers of the Li Family pulled Li Shengnan aside and whispered about what she wanted to do.
"If he doesn’t want to marry you, and you force him to do so, he won’t treat you well regardless. No matter how handsome he is, if he only gives you cold stares every day, life won’t be pleasant. Why not just take the silver? With the silver, you can get yourself another handsome man. You admired Boss Su across from us, didn’t you? You said she dares to love and hate, a true heroine; well, her handsome little husband was bought."
Li Shengnan hesitated.
This man was good-looking, but no matter how good-looking, he was a bit disrespectful.
"Alright then, one hundred taels," Li Shengnan said. "I need more to buy myself a good-looking husband."
"One hundred taels?" Zhong Lanhua shouted. "Why don’t you go rob someone?"
"Either one hundred taels, or he has to marry me, you all can discuss it." Li Shengnan stood her ground.
Originally seeing him as good-looking, she wanted to keep him by her side as her man. They were just unwilling to negotiate. Now she took a step back, but there was no reason for her to retreat further, especially since they owed her a life.
Su Yaoguang saw Zhang Zhaodi returning from the other side and smiled, asking, "Did you hear what was said inside?"
Since Fenghua Pavilion had closed the door, the onlookers had dispersed. Zhang Zhaodi, curious about the outcome, stayed outside listening for a long time. Judging by her expression, she must have heard something interesting.
"The Li Family agreed to resolve it with money, asking for one hundred taels, not a cent less. Zhong Lanhua was scolding for half a day, and the Li Family almost got physical. In the end, Jiang Yihuan persuaded Zhong Lanhua to pay the silver and settle the matter," Zhang Zhaodi said excitedly. "From what I gathered, Jiang Yihuan and Xiao Ci’s marriage is set, and to quell the recent rumors, it seems they are rushing to get married."
Zhang Pandi, nearby, said, "Didn’t Zhong Lanhua go around telling everyone that Xiao Ci would only be eligible to marry her family’s Jiang Yihuan after passing the scholar exams? Now, forget about being a scholar, he hasn’t even passed the scholar exams yet!"
"After such a scandal, how can they dare to delay any further? They are afraid that if they wait any longer, the rumors will make Jiang Yihuan unable to lift her head. So now they’re putting out the word that an accident happened while the two young lovers were secretly meeting by the river, and due to excessive passion, they fell into the river. Now, to fulfill the couple’s love, they plan to marry early. As for the outside gossip, if it spreads again, they have an excuse to report it to the authorities, saying those people are defaming an innocent woman and sullying her honor. Such disgraceful actions are strictly condemned and should scare people into silence."
Zhou Wangshu nudged Su Yaoguang, asking, "What are you daydreaming about?"
Could it be that the news of Xiao Yanci marrying Jiang Yihuan was upsetting her?
Su Yaoguang replied, "I’m thinking about a new rouge formula; I’ll talk about it once I’ve figured it out."
"You’re wandering off just to think about business?"
"What else?" Su Yaoguang looked at him puzzled. "Aside from business, there’s nothing else to worry me, right?"
Now her whole family was living happily together. Her second aunt and cousin had left the abyss, and her younger aunt and uncle’s relationship was getting better, with her uncle’s health improving.
Most importantly, her mother was now happy every day, unlike in the past life, where she quickly turned gray with wrinkles but always wore a worried and resentful expression. The current her was rosy and in no way worse off than Zhong Lanhua. In contrast, Zhong Lanhua, the famous pretty widow, had been facing recent troubles; time hadn’t spared her and had brought quite a few wrinkles and gray hair.
"I’m off to the academy," Zhou Wangshu said.
Su Yaoguang waved her hand, "Off you go then!"
Zhou Wangshu looked down at her.
Su Yaoguang lifted her head, puzzled, "What’s wrong?"
"You’re really okay?" Zhou Wangshu confirmed again.
Su Yaoguang touched Zhou Wangshu’s forehead, "You might want to stop studying; I think you’ve read yourself silly. What could possibly be wrong with me?"
Just as Zhou Wangshu left, Jia Chunni came over and said to Su Yaoguang, "That Yang Quan came to see Jing’er for a consultation."
Su Yaoguang was at a loss, "Which Yang Quan?"
"The master craftsman at Fenghua Pavilion across the street. He makes all their rouge and cosmetics. He seldom makes appearances because he has a big black birthmark on his face that’s quite frightening," Jia Chunni quickly reassured, "I’m not saying Jing’er’s birthmark is scary; Jing’er is not scary at all, I’m just saying that Yang Quan’s is frightening."
"Did he come to see Jing’er because of that birthmark?" Su Yaoguang understood. "But Jinger’s birthmark isn’t innate, it was caused by poison later on. I’m afraid he might be disappointed."
