Riley’s POV

"What do you mean he is fading?" I asked Cane. My voice sounded scared even to me. I looked at the beast with the iron bar still in its back. Right before my eyes, Gunnar started to change. His big beast body got smaller. Fur went away and skin came back. In a few seconds he was back in his human form on the ground. He coughed hard and blood came out of his mouth. The iron bar was still buried deep inside his back. That was when it hit me. He was dying.

No no no. This is not happening. Cane and Caden had just told me about the prophecy. I could not believe it happened so fast because of my stubbornness. I stood there looking at him. My legs felt weak.

I did not know when tears started sliding down my cheeks. Gunnar looked up at me and smiled even though he was hurt. He raised his hand slow and wiped my tears with his fingers. His hand felt cold.

"Thank you, Silly girl" he said soft. "Take care of my brothers for me, Riley. You would right?"

He coughed again. Blood came out more. He pulled my head down toward him and kissed me on the lips. It was a long, thorough kiss. When he let go he looked at me with love in his eyes.

"I love you," he said. "I love you more than anything. I have loved you right from when we met at that club in Crescent Hollow. I am sorry I did not tell you this before."

I cried harder. The tears would not stop. "Stop talking," I said. "Please stop talking like this, like you’re going to die"

He smiled one more time. Then his body dropped down and went still. I shook him fast. "Gunnar? Gunnar!" I called his name again and again but nothing happened. He did not move. I could not believe what was happening. I screamed loud. "No you can’t do this to me you bastard! You can’t! No!"

Cane stood up quick and pulled me away from Gunnar at once. He held me tight even though I was fighting him.

"His soul is never going to ascend if you stay close and cry on him like that," Cane said. His voice was sad but firm. "Caden, carry Gunnar away now."

Caden moved fast and picked up Gunnar’s body careful. I kept thrashing against Cane. I hit his chest with my hands and tried to get free. "Let me go! Let me go to him!" I shouted. Cane held me stronger. Then he slammed his palms at the side of my neck. Everything went dark right away. I lost consciousness.

When I woke up I was in a soft bed in one of the chambers. My head felt heavy and my neck hurt a little. I opened my eyes and saw four people standing there looking at me. Cane, Caden, Amelia, and Summer. Summer is only ten years old and she thinks of Gunnar as her dad. She smiled at me at first but then she started crying. Big tears rolled down her little cheeks.

I sat up slowly. My mind was still fuzzy. I looked at all of them and asked, "Where is Gunnar? Is he okay now? Did you take him to Leslie? Did she heal him yet?"

Cane looked at me with sad eyes. "Riley... Gunnar is dead."

"No!" I yelled at him. I grabbed the nearest thing to me. It was a small vase on the table next to the bed. I threw it at him hard. It cut his cheek a little bit. Blood came out. "I won’t accept it! He can’t die!"

I kept thrashing around in the bed. I threw the blankets off and tried to get up. Cane and Caden both moved closer to calm me down but I pushed them away. I cried and shouted. I said it was not true. I said they were lying to me. My chest hurt so bad. I could not breathe right. I kept saying Gunnar’s name over and over.

After a while it started to dawn on me that he was really dead. My body got tired from fighting. I stopped thrashing and just sat there. Tears kept coming down my face. Summer was crying louder now. Amelia was holding her and trying to comfort her.

Caden stepped closer. His voice was quiet and gentle. "He will be buried at sundown today."

I looked at him. The words felt like a punch in my stomach. Sundown today. That was too soon. I wanted to scream again but no sound came out at first. I just sat there with tears falling. My hands were shaking. I thought about Gunnar’s smile when he wiped my tears. I thought about his kiss. I thought about how he said he loved me since the club in Crescent Hollow. All of it hurt too much.

Summer ran to the bed and hugged me tight. She was still crying. "Daddy Gunnar is gone," she said in her small voice. That made me cry even harder. I hugged her back. We cried together for a long time. Cane and Caden stood there watching us. They looked broken too.

I did not know what to do next. Everything felt wrong. Gunnar was gone because of me. Because I was stubborn and went down there. Because I stabbed him with that iron bar. The thoughts kept going around in my head. I felt sick.

Cane sat on the edge of the bed. "Riley, it is not your fault," he said soft. But I did not believe him. I turned my face away. I wanted to be alone but I also did not want them to leave. It was all so confusing.

The room was quiet except for Summer’s small sobs. I held her closer. The sun was still up outside the window but it would go down soon. Sundown was coming. They were going to bury Gunnar today. I could not stop thinking about it.

I wiped my face with my hand. "I need to see him," I said. My voice was hoarse from crying. "One more time before they bury him."

Caden nodded slow. "We can take you."

I got up from the bed even though my legs felt weak. Cane helped me stand. Summer held my hand tight and Amelia stayed close too.

This was really happening. Gunnar was dead. And I had to say goodbye.
