Riley’s POV
"Do you want to say something?"
Every face turned toward me. I froze, unsure if I could or even should. But then I looked at Gunnar, and suddenly I knew I had to. My legs shook as I walked forward. The closer I got, the harder it became to breathe.
Finally I stood beside him. For a long moment I simply stared, then reached down and touched his hand—cold, still, and so terribly wrong.
I laughed weakly. "You know, you’re a real jerk." Several people blinked, and I heard Summer sniffle behind me. "I thought you hated me more because of my ignorance but you didn’t." A few smiles appeared. "You annoyed me." More smiles broke through. "But every single thing you say is always true."
Cane muttered, "Facts," and I pointed at him. "See? Even your brother agrees."
A tiny ripple of laughter moved through the crowd. Then my smile faded. "I didn’t even feel safe with you. I didn’t even get to see you smile for a second." My voice started to shake. "You always showed me your indifferent side but always the first to jump into danger for me and I never got to tell you how much that meant."
The entire place felt frozen in place. "I was scared," I continued, staring at him. "I was scared because loving you felt too big. And now I’d give anything for one more minute." A sob broke free. "I’d take one minute. Thirty seconds. Five seconds. Just enough time to tell you that I love you Gunnar Dravenmoor."
I leaned down and pressed a kiss to his forehead. The crowd lowered their heads, many of them crying now—including me. Especially me. Because this was goodbye, and I had never learned how to say it.
The sun dropped even lower as the warriors moved forward to begin the burial.
My stomach plummeted at once. No. Not yet. Please, not yet. The platform began to lower toward the waiting grave, and something inside me snapped—physically.
I felt it like a break deep in my chest. Heat exploded through my body. I stumbled backward as people gasped. The ground beneath my feet started shaking.
"What the hell?" Caden whispered.
Pain tore through me, white-hot and violent, ancient in its power. I dropped to my knees with a scream ripping from my throat. Then fire erupted—not ordinary flames, but silver and blinding. It burst from my skin as the crowd stumbled back.
Summer screamed my name. Cane rushed toward me, only to be thrown backward by the force that sent him crashing to the ground.
Everyone froze.
Wind slammed through the burial grounds, bending trees and spinning leaves. Clouds gathered overhead, and the air itself changed.
Every hair on my body stood on end. Something was listening—something powerful, something old I could feel. The silver flames consumed me completely, yet they didn’t burn.
I rose slowly to my feet as the fire swirled around me. My tears kept falling, but my voice carried across the entire valley.
"Hear me." Thunder cracked overhead. Gasps spread through the crowd.
"Hear me!" The wind roared louder. The earth trembled. My heart pounded wildly, but I didn’t care anymore. I had nothing left to lose. I looked toward the sky, toward fate, toward destiny, toward every force that had ever existed.
"TAKE MY SOUL."
The crowd froze. Cane’s face drained of color. "Riley—"
"TAKE IT!" My scream shook the ground as silver fire exploded higher.
"I don’t care!" The wind grew violent as the sky darkened. Everything itself seemed to hold its breath.
"I’ll give it willingly! Take every future life! Take every tomorrow! Take every piece of me!" My voice broke. "But bring him back."
Silence fell—absolute, complete silence. Even the wind stopped. Even the trees. Even the birds.
Everything paused. I looked toward Gunnar’s body as my heart shattered all over again.
"I’ll burn for him. I’ll pay whatever price exists. But let him live." My chest heaved. "I can find him again." A broken smile touched my lips.
"Fate always finds a way. So let him have this life. Let him laugh again. Let him annoy his brothers again. Let him teach Summer how to break traffic laws with motorcycles."
A few tearful laughs escaped the crowd. I smiled through my tears. "Let him be happy for once, amongst his brothers, he’s been the most unhappy one."
A drop of tears rolled down my cheeks "I’ll find him again if I have another life"
The silver fire suddenly surged toward the sky in a massive column of light that erupted above the burial grounds.
Everyone shielded their eyes. The ground shook violently and the air boomed with ancient, terrifying, beautiful power.
Then a voice spoke—not from the sky or the earth, but everywhere and nowhere at once. One single sentence.
’A DEBT OFFERED. A DEBT ACCEPTED.’
The silver light exploded, and the entire world went white.
