AYLA
The first sound that reached my ears was that of hooves. I was slumped over something warm and I could barely move.
I realized soon after that I was bound to the saddle of a horse with an arm locked around my waist to keep me from falling.
The memory of what had happened surfaced but I was too tired to hold onto it with my mind as foggy as it was and so I let the darkness pull me under again.
The next time my eyes opened, I was in a bed. Lucius was standing over me with a smile on his face.
"You are awake," he said. "Welcome to Emberfall."
"What?" I croaked.
"We are at my palace, Ayla." He spread his hands."Although I would not consider it a palace, honestly. It is not as grand as Kieran’s."
I tried to move but my body would not comply and when I looked down at myself, I could see the reason why.
I had ropes tying both wrists to the frame of the bed.
"Let me go." I murmured, tugging at the ropes.
The smile dropped from Lucius’ face. He sat on the edge of the bed beside me, his hand coming up to my face and tracing my cheekbone in a slow, tender motion that made my skin crawl.
"I tried to explain to you how much you mean to me," he sighed. "I gave you the truth and saved you from him but you ran but I guess I should have known you cannot handle the truth, Ayla. She couldn’t either..."
I gaped at him.
This man who stood before me was not the same man who had talked to me about his family. This man’s eyes were devoid of the warmth of a person and in its place was a madness that made the blood in my veins run cold.
And I was his prisoner.
Nyx, I called out to my wolf.
There was no answer.
"This is Amara," Lucius said. He gestured to his left and a girl stepped forward from where she had been standing in the shadows.
I had not seen her earlier.
When she stepped forward, my breath hitched in my lungs.
Everything about her was white. Her hair, her dress, her eyebrows, her skin was so pale it was almost translucent and her eyes had no pupil or iris, just white stretching from every corner and glittering.
"Hi," she said.
I could feel an aura radiating off her like heat off a fire, pressing against my skin and against the inside of my skull.
Nyx, I called out in my mind. Nyx, can you hear me?
"Don’t bother," the girl said. "I bound her."
"Excuse me?"
"Your wolf." Amara tilted her head. "I bound her. She cannot hear you...at least not until I need her."
"What do you mean, need her?"
The girl took a step back, not answering my question.
"Well?" Lucius asked, rising from the bed.
Amara nodded at him, her eyes never leaving my face. "She is the one. She will do."
The one for what?
I watched Lucius’ lips curve into a pleased grin.
He turned to me, his eyes soft.
"You are a wonder," he sighed.
"Come, Amara," he said. "We need to make preparations."
He crossed to the door, and the girl followed, while I lay in the bed with my heart slamming against my ribs, trying to make sense of what the fuck was happening to me.
Lucius paused at the door, turning to me.
"I will have Mira bring you a change of clothes and some food," he said. "You met her yesterday. She will take care of you. You must be starving considering you ate nothing all day, yesterday."
I said nothing.
He held my gaze for a moment longer, and then his expression shifted, the softness draining out of it like water out of a cracked cup.
It was like watching something out of the ordinary.
The way he was able to go from hot to cold in an instant without breaking a beat.
"I suggest you behave yourself, Ayla." He said it as though he was offering me advice but it was the most frightening thing I had heard in my life.
"None of that funny business about trying to escape because you cannot."
The door closed behind them.
I lay in the bed, tied to the frame, and listened to their footsteps recede down the corridor.
Nyx. I tried again, pushing the thought out into the dark. Please. Nyx.
I began pulling against the ropes until my wrists were raw, and my breath came in ragged sobs but it did not give.
Then the door opened and Mira walked in with some clothes folded over one arm and a tray in her hands with steam rising from a bowl of something that made my stomach growl.
She did not meet my eyes as she crossed the room and set the tray on the table and the clothes at the foot of the bed. She helped free one of my hands so that I could sit up without much trouble and eat.
"Why did you tell him?" I asked.
Her eyes squeezed shut. "I had to."
"You had to."
"He would have killed me." Her voice cracked on the last word. "And Amara..." She stopped herself, biting the words off.
"Amara what?"
"I am sorry," she said, finally looking at me. "I am so sorry."
She turned toward the door.
"At least tell me what they plan to do to me." I called out after her.
She froze, one hand on the door knob.
"Alpha Lucius plans to make you his mate."
I stared at her.
"That is not possible."
"Amara will make it so. She is... she is the worst kind of evil you can ever think to imagine."
"What is she? I could feel something... Is she a priestess?"
"Oh no" Mira whispered. "Priestesses do not exist in Emberfall. We call them witches"
